Sean, I think I have the decals covered.  The ones from the kit are a bit yellowed but I have some others that look useable.

SC, thanks for the picture.  Every little bit of info helps.

I've been doing some reading and it looks like this one never made it past the prototype stage but by all accounts it was a sound design.  The Italians surrendered before production got under way.

Dave, I read somewhere that if you tape the decals to window that gets a lot of sun and leave them for a few weeks it sould get rid of the yellow.

I just reread the article and it said to tape the decals to a south facing window for several weeks.  It said the sunlight will bleach out the yellow.  But inspect the decal periodically.  The sun may bleach the red and yellow pigments in the decals.  Make sure that the window does not sweat.

Sean, send them my wayLaugh [(-D]

Guy, I'll keep my eye out for that edition.  Takes a little while for your mags to make it to our side of the pond though! Wink [;)]

Morning everyone and Happy Crimbo to you all. That Stormo site is great. Theres a lot of great stuff on there. the gallery especially.

I think, looking at them, i may have to purchase a CR 42 biplane. She looks fantastic and if CA does em, they will be mighty fine, oh yes.

Anyhoo, its 9.28 here and i need Tea.

Guy hope you are enjoying your tea this morning, I have build the Classic Airframes Cr 42 and it is a really nice kit. The fit of all of the major parts is very good. I only had one problem. The wing struts. I had not made any seriuos attemp to build a biplane ever and I ran into a problem. I started by mounting the upper wing on the center struts attached to the fuselage and let them dry. When I went to fit the outer struts they all came up to short to reach the upper wing. An experienced biplane builder probally would have checked this first and shortened the inner struts but my lack of experience with biplanes really did me in. Now I have no choice but to fabricate new longer outer struts. A task that I have been putting of for about a year now. Just can't seem to get motivated to spend hours sanding away a little tiny struts and I need 8 of them! here is a pic of where I am stuck.

You can see the broken strut and the missing other ones. It really is a sweet model and I should just dig in and finish it.

Well look what my secret santa from the SSGB3 sent to me.  Looks like I'll be changing my build to the CA 311.  Man this thing has a lot of glass Shock [:O].  If I have time before this GB is done I'll still do the G55s.

SC, what a nightmare. Your making me panic now about doing a biplane LOL. The rest of the build looks great. Whos to say they all had the struts on em Whistling [:-^] War was hell!!

Dave, great score for christmas. Its good to put a face to the name as well.

Hope you all had a great day as well.

SC, just a thought, but would it be easier to cut the existing struts in half and add a length of sprue in the middle to get the needed length than to make new ones?  It would be easy to file and sand the added piece of sprue to the same contour of the existing strut once it is glued in place.

That is a good idea Dave. Seeing as I have already snapped two of them in half anyway! I might try that. Still a tricky feat as they are only a couple of mm thick in the center but still probally less work than fabricating all new ones. I also considered trying to fabricate them out of brass tube. The hobby store had teardrop shaped brass rod in stock but it was a little to big for 1/48 scale and it was the smallest size made. Finishing this model has been a thorn in my side for a long time. Several ideas but all of them require a signifigant amount of fabrication. Sooner or later I have to do something good or bad because it is really bothering me as it sits them incomplete.

BTW nice score there Dave! I have that one in the stash too. Make sure you have lots of Tamiya masking tape for all of that glass!

Well, I finally got a kit for this group build.  I scored a 21st Century Toys 1/32 Macchi MC.202 Folgore off ebay.  Assuming all goes well with the postal system, I should be able to start the GB on time.  Looking forward to starting and seeing the finished products, you guys are working on some interesting aircraft.

Hey all, 1st things 1st. I hope you all had a great Crimbo or holidays or whatever and got loads of great kits.

Jeff. Front page updated, great score fella.

Dave, that is an awfull lot of windows. Youd better buy the Eduard masks otherwise you may still be masking, come 2010. LOL

Reading the front page all, i see theres a lot of 202's and 205's, thats great in my book as any probs we find will all be shared. It will also be good to compare the colour scemes on the suckers.

6 days till the start. Glue at the ready boys.

Yeah, Guy, I think the camo painting will be the big challenge for this GB.  Seem like the Italians went out of their way to make it hard on us modelers 65 years later!  Looking forward to seeing the results.

Guy you really got me thinking when you talked about doing a 1/48 Classic Airframes Cr42. I just snagged another one on eBay for $15.00! I can not stop thinking about finishing mine finally and now mabye doing another! I purchased a set of Sky Model decals a while ago and there are still about 7 options left on the sheet. She is definetly a beautifull airplane IMHO. If I keep bringing it up mabye you will not be able to resist and have to build one. If that does'nt work I can always resort to violence as stated in this GB rules.Big Smile [:D] Mabye a nice color shot will help push you over the edge. Heck i'll even send you any left over decal options from the sheet if it helps.

I actually have at least 6 or 7 kits that qualify for this but I'm scared of the paint schemes.

I have 3 fighters I started, and several bombers I haven't. Does anyone have a good tutorial for the camo used on most Italian aircraft that could walk an air brush amatuer through the process? Great looking planes (well most of them anyway) but their camo is worse than the Luftwaffe stuff.

I've GOT to get a kit for this build. Wanted something obscure but seeing as how I only have one italian kit in the case I may just go for another 202 or a 205 to help it out. Not in the mood for a big kit like an SM79. Or maybe a R2005? Or whatever it is.

If you really want to go a bit off the beaten path but not go to crazy with a huge kit the 1/48 Classic Airframes Cr 32 kit is pretty nice as long as you do'nt mind the frustrations of stacking and rigging wings. I have one stashed away and it is a nicely done kit. Still a short run kit but great resin engine and details.

Guy if you are interested I have decals for 4 other nightfighter options for the Cr42 on the Skymodel sheet. I will post pics for you if you see anything you like thier your buddy. Really looking forward to starting this GB. Great idea!

Come on join the fun AaronW, as for the paint schemes, they can seem a little daunting but id say, go for the decal sheet and do a smoke ring camo. Really impressive stuff from what ive seen and just blag everyone and tell em its freehand. So, come on, what you building Big Smile [:D]

Shooter, Crusher had exactly the same idea as me, go for the CR. 32. It looks way to cool for school and noone is doing one.

Aaron, If im doing 2 for this build, then you have to. As we couldnt find Franks picture for his homework, our next mission is to badger the Aaronster in to buying another Italian kit (Or 2) LOL.

Frank, P recieved.

Id love to see the decals Crusher. Im prefering a day fighter. That kit i found was the only one i could find and its German and a nightfighter. So hopefully its an easy conversion to day fighter and with the decals. Wooooeeee.
