Now that i am here anyways i wish to make an announcement to everyone in the group that i am going to continue my sabre build on a lower priority in favour of some other models i am working on. I must admit i am having a hard time concentrating on this model since it is not a WW2 subject therefore inhibiting my motivation to continue on it.

Richard

Kermit I am looking forward to seeing your Saber finished, hope you can get motivated again soon.

Thunderbolt Glad to hear errrrr read you are starting your build !!

I have come close to tossing my P-38 in the trashcan more than once, but its still coming along. I tell ya this has got to be the worst kit I have ever come across !!!!!! The foiling is almost done though, not looking great, but ok I guess. Now if I could just shake this flu that tackeled me I can get it finished and get some more WIP pictures posted.

Hey guys thought I would post a couple huh WIP pictures so you'd know I am still plugging along on this build. Actually I am suprised this project hasn't taken a test flight into the trash can yet. This Revell P-38J is really beating me up pretty good. I am still not really pleased with it but hey I gotta finish it now I guess. Heres some pics.

As you can see I still have a ways to go. Thanks for looking and comments are welcome good or bad.

Looks real nice so far Randy. Foiling a 38 has got to be a real PITA. I think I'll still stick with paint.

I'm planning to start my T-6s after this chopper I've been working on(what a drag that is!!!)if I ever get it done. After that, maybe something for the "racer GB" once that's up n running.

Randy, you're doing a great job at applying the foil. Can you tell a bit about it's use? It is not ordinary kitchen foil, right? it looks great. And you got those nasty seams out as far as i can see, impressive!Wink [;)]

Kermit, its looking great mate. Id love to know more about  how to use the stuff. Ive used Bare metal foil before, is it similar to that?

 I WISH!!!!

Just a dirty "ramp rat" at the local airport, and sealcoater for asphalt driveways, basically, your run of the mill DIRTBALL. Over educated(ya right) under paid, my commercail/multi-engine/instrument pilot certs. are useless to me now......oh, I'm so depressed.

Anyway, I do play in a band, we do a few shows around the Detroit area, an absolutely horrendous(sp?) area for local musicians, but I get to take my frustrations and aggressions out on my guitar. Keeps me from that mental downward spiral that leads to very bad things.

Fermis This P-38 is a major PITA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! to foil and I thought the P-51 was tough. I do hope the end result will be worth all the cussing I have been doing. Fermis dont tell me you cant fly anymore, I hate the fact that I can no longer fly, cant tell you how much I miss it. Last time I flew PIC was back in 98 November to be exact. I did break down and go up with an instructer a couple years ago to see if I could still fly ( just not the same having him sitting next to me) had a great time and even managed a pretty good landing in a 172.

Fermis cant wait to see your T-6s

Kermit Thank you for the complement, the seams have been a huge nightmare to hide, and I think this build has improved my skills quite a bit. Just hope I wont be too ashamed to post the finished pictures. As far as the foiling goes I use store bought Reynolds Wrap foil the standard stuff not the heavy duty. The adhesive I use is made by Microscale called Micro Metal Foil Adhesive. Just brush it on in a thin coat with a soft brush let it dry 10 minutes or so the get to foiling. Heres a link to the tutoral that got me started.

http://www.finescale.com/fsm/default.aspx?c=a&id=283

I can tell you Richard that foiling takes 3 times longer than painting does. If you decide to try foiling I will try and answer any questions you have. I have also found that I can use either side of the foil for a differant look, on this build I am using the dull side for that unpolished look. I wont be using steel wool on this model because I dont want the finish to be shiny.

Guys your kinds words and encouragement have kept this project going, thank you.

Dang!!! Since 98', that sucks. I really feel for ya. I thought I had it bad, it's only been since March for me. I just can't afford to keep renting. Nobody's hiring, so my proficiency and recency experience is shot, so I can't get a flying jobs now, even if they were hiring. I started in Nov. 98, solo'ed in Dec. with 12 hours, better than...... you know what. At least I get to fuel em up, fueled Robs dads plane today(LancairIV) the one on his avatar. Beautiful machine!!! Can't wait to finish up my chopper and get going on them 6s.

EDIT: Almost forgot to mention some of the perks of the job. I got a FREE, yup, FREE ride in Yankee Lady, the Yankee Airforces B-17, did I mention for FREE, and got paid while doing it!!! I also get to protect planes from the few deer we get inside the fence, took this brute out on thursday, got 3 others a few weeks ago!!!

Lancair IV Nice plane your Dad has, I never been in one but have drooled over a few at the local EAA shows. Maybe if I am real nice you could pm me a few pictures of it. Oh and if he ever gets to southern ca with it I would be willing to be ballast for him. Before I got sick I was building a Steen Skybolt, it was 40% finished when I sold it.

I would DIE for just having someone allow me to take the controls for just a minute in a rusty old cessna..... All my flying is done on my computer...Sad [:(] Consider yourselves privileged gentlemen!

Randy,

Too bad you can't fly anymore (i take it).... You don't happen to have pics from your flying days to show a fellow enthousiast?Tongue [:P]

Guess it's time to get off my butt and get into this thing. Let me first start by saying that I am extremely impressed by everything I have seen so far. Lufty's 'Stang was what inspired me to get my butt in gear and get started. I cut and cleaned parts last night and got all this painting/weathering done today.

Got the office done. I plan on buttoning her up tonight or tomorrow.

I have a big bottle of Alclad II polished aluminium that I ordered on accident. (I also have a few of the smaller bottles) and am seriously thinking of going like "stupid shiny" on this one.

Thanks for looking. As always, any and all comments or suggetsions are welcome.

Regards,

Jeff

Edit: After looking at the photos I decided the wash was a little too heavy so I went over it here and there with a damp paper towel. I also got rid of all the air-bubble marks.

Nice office there! Great work.

There are two minor things i would like to adress though since you are asking for my honest humble opinion: the cockpit floor and the wash you applied to the sides of the fuselage...

The floor: Either the wash is distorting the picture or you have used a far too thick layer of paint. The picture (to me) gives the impression of the latter. It is looking like there is a huge layer of mud on that floor where you want it to look like wood, since the p51 had a wooden cockpit floor. I would suggest a lighter shade and either more dilluting of your paint or a less drastic wash, depending on which scenario is in play here.Wink [;)]

Fuselage:

Before i really can give advice here i would want to know if you have used an enamel/ oil wash or a watercolour/ acrylic wash.

Personally i always use watercolours for my washes for the simple reason i can take it of with water when the result isn't to my liking.

To make my wash more "wet" i add a drop of dishwashing agent. when applying and brushing too heavily i get the effect i see on your build: i get bubbles that, when drying up, cause circular marks on the surface i am working on. You really want to have an even coat of your wash you can later on remove at places, leaving the "dirt" on the edges and recesses.

I know, i know,... i am being a critical b*stard... Your build really looks great Wink [;)] but these two things catched my attention to be honest to you..

No offense taken at all Richard.

When I say that all comments are welcome, I mean just that. I'm a big-boy and can take constructive (or otherwise) criticism. I used Warpigs Black Wash for the interior. After posting those pics, I saw how heavy the weathing was and got in there with some wet Q-Tips and broke it up and thinned it out quite a bit. I have never tried to paint wood before. I used MM Wood and MM Dark Brown for the 'pit floor. I figured that once it is buttoned up, only a small fragment will be visible and that with a flashlight so I didn't worry about it too much. In fact, I was seriously considering just going all Interior Green and calling it a day.

Thanks for the response and the advice. BTW, your 'Stang looks really nice. Good job on that!

Jeff

Firesmaker Glad to see you have started Big Smile [:D] Hey I dont think a P-51 could be too shiney but stupid shiney ??? I cant wait to see this. But really I am looking forward to your build Jeff.

Kermit Have you decided to try using foil now ??? I dont know how it works in your country but here most larger airports have flight schools. I went to one here and took a demonstration ride for like half price of a regular schooling flight, was 30 bucks for an hour flight. It was just on a whim that I did that. I now call them "GOTCHA FLIGHTS" because once the instructer gave me the controls I was hooked. If you can do that in your country Kermit give it a shot, but I caution you, once you are hooked its both worse and much more rewarding than any illicet drug this world has to offer. I will look and see if I still have some pictures Kermit and will be happy to share them with you. I flew alone most of the time so I didnt have that many pictures to begin with. I did lose my medical, so cant fly anymore, 2 heart attacks and meds ended my flying days.

Firesmacker,

Glad you take my yacking for what it wasBig Smile [:D]. I am very sure your build will turn out very nice. Looking forward to your updates. Who doesn't love a nice stang?Smile [:)]. And thanks for the compliment!

Vetteman,

I have read the tutorial here  on FSM and it looks like a daunting task, requiring the patience of a monk i think... Maybe if i feel like it i will try this on a small 1:72 model once. But it does give a real nice and realistic finish!

Couldn't take lessons even though there is a small airport here. Looked into it a few years ago and don't know why but it is much MUCH more expensive overhere. Renting a cessna for an hour alone will set me back 200+ dollars...Boohoo [BH] Not to mention landing fees, instruction fees, medical exam, etc. etc.... Too much for me.

I will have to settle for flying in the passengers seat i guessSmile [:)]. Next adventure will be in october when i will have a holiday over in the states. Staying with friends over in Wa. Really looking forward to the smaller flight that will take me farther inland from Seattle as i am told i will pass mt. Rainier very closeby and stuff like that. Gonna be awesome!Big Smile [:D]

Hi All

yes I'm still here, lurking in the background.

Kermit, I say give it a try. when I joined the build I originaly going to paint the Mustang, but was swayed by the the others to try the foil, and I must say I'm glad I did (am/ are). It takes a little longer than painting, but I am finding it much more enjoyable.
It is quite easy to pick up a panel, and put down some foil 'when there is a bit of spare time', not having to worry about charging the compressor, prepare the airbrush, mix the paints, and then clean up everything after, and there is no overspray to worry about either. I never imagined I could get a result like that just from regular household aluminium foil.

My Mustang kind of got put on hold for the last couple of months, as I have been concerntrating on other projects, but I have now realised that there is no way the diorama I am working on for this years model show is going to be completed in time, so that is now on the slow burner, and the Mustang has moved back into the center of the bench. (I'm glad this is a 1 year GB).

I will try to post some WIP pics in the near future (when I reach another milestone).

I must say, all the builds so far are looking excellent. Keep up the good work.

Brett

Demo flights are great for someone who just wants hold the stick for a while, and quite affordable. Oh, and yes, you will be hooked!!!

Randy, have you looked into the "light sport" catagory, no medical required, just a drivers lisence!!! (or have you "grounded" yourself, as well?) I'd ship you some backstraps, but I think they'll go bad. Come on over, I'll grill ya up some!!!

 Here's a few pics Kermit.

This one's from a cessna 152, headed toward my house, just across the lake from that big white eye sore, just above the nose.

Thank you Fermis, that was so so cool to see! Consider yourself privilegedWink [;)]

Actually found myself at the website of the local airport here (tiny grass strip, 5 hangars and a tiny tower and that pretty much sums it up LOL) and such a "introduction lesson" is not that expensive...who knows...

Fermis we are gonna talk Kermit into trying a demo flight and hes gonna hate us for it LOL. Nice pictures by the way thanks for sharing them with us. You get a whole differant outlook on life from that cockpit I am tellin ya. Yes I have looked into the light sport category and even looked into ultralights problem is I am a large man 6'3", meds and inactivity sent my weight up from 210 to 280 so I dont fit or put the aircraft over gross with just a splash of fuel. So I guess you could say I grounded myself in a way.

Kermit You are coming to the states ??? Hey make it an even more memorable vacation guy and find an airport here for that Discovery Flight could be a lot cheaper than back home. BTW would you be coming thru LAX on your way to Seattle ?? May I sugest for your first foil build a 1/48 kit Kermit ??  I think 1/72 scale would be quite difficult to work with due to its size. Also a simple airframe like a P-47 or a AT-6 would be best because there arent many compound curves to deal with. Once you learn how to bend and streach the foil on your first build the sky is the limit.

Dioramator Sorry to hear your dio isnt gonna make the show, but I am quite happy your P-51 build is back on the bench.

Got some more work done. This is my first time using Polished Aluminum and it is very unforgiving/a pain to spray. I ended up with a lot of grainy areas right next to areas that look fine. And a lot of weird looking spray patterns.

I am seriously considering hitting the problem areas with some 600 grit and doing it all in Duraluminum. I am doing a Yellow Nose with Aero-Master decals and this just looks too unrealistic to me. What do you guys think?

Thanks for looking. As always, any comments or suggestions are welcome.

Got some more work done. I need to touch up a few areas where the paint bled under the tape and one spot where I screwed up with my masking.

This one will be done as "Ferocious Frankie".

The yellow along the wing tips is just a reflection.

Thanks for looking. As always, any comments or suggestions are welcome.

Firesmaker For a show bird I like the looks of the polished aluminum so your looking good there if thats the look you were intending. I did some test strips with differant clear coats on foil you may want to check them out, they are posted here in this group page 3 or 4 I think, I would guess a semi gloss would age the finish by dulling it some. But do not use a flat coat it will really make the aluminum look grainy and grey, just plain bad IMHO.  I really like the yellow nose keep up the nice work.

Hi guys

I have a question for you.

I'm using household foil for my NMF, how much do I rub it with the steel wool?
do I just lightly scuff over the surface, or do I buff it until the steel wool bites (so it all turns brushed grey)?

any help would be much appreciated.

Dioramator Hey seems like you are really moving along with your build. If you look at the surface on the foil you will see that it has a heavy grain to it, just like wood does. The steel will will do three things for you, it wont turn the foil grey. 1) It will remove that grainy look which IMHO is way out of scale for our models. 2) It will soften and hide the seams in the foil, dont know about your build but I always end up with some of those. 3) It will polish the foil to a shine. Hope you are using 0000 wool on it. You will want to be a bit gentle with the steel wool so you dont pick up any corners of the foil as you polish, and it doesnt take a lot of rubbing either, just enough to remove that grainy surface.  I also like to polish the model in the direction of flight looks better I think. A word of warning here after you use the steel wool on it handle it with gloves on and clean it I use alcohol and an old t-shirt, your finger prints will turn the bare aluminum black. Then as soon as you can clear coat it to prevent corossian, I like to brush future on with a soft wide brush. I let it cure 2 days before doing anymore work, then finish her up. If you wish to dull the shine I have had good results useing a semi gloss but do not use a dull or flat coat !! Really makes the foil look bad gives it kind of a gravely look.

Hope this helps you out if I can answer any more questions will be happy to.

PS are you using the shiny side of the foil or the dull side ?

thanks for that Vetteman

I am using shiny side out with the foil, I tried using the dull side to replicate the upper surfaces (oxidised), but was having trouble with the adhesive not taking to the shiny surface, so it is all shiny.

I dont think the steel wool I am using is fine enough, there is no grading on the packet, so I shall have to go out searching for some OOOO. I haven't had too much trouble with seams, as I have been trying to match the existing panel lines and using 'post it notes' as masks, but I have some complex curves coming up, and may have to expose some edges.

I plan to airbrush the future over the kit, with such large panels, I don't have a paint brush soft enough and wide enought to get good coverage

I must say I am enjoying the foiling experience, years ago I worked with computerised signage, so laying down pressure sensitive material is no stranger to me. It's amazing how much give this material has.

If I get a chance, I will take some WIP photos, and post them some time today.
