War In The Pacific Group Build 2009 - 2010

I'll be building the -5 with the R2800s so I'll get those from Quickboost. And I'll need new props. I just finished a build where I put R2600s on a Catalina so I think I know how to do it. Find a donor kit- the cowlings follow the engine, not the airframe. I'm looking at an overall Navy Blue color scheme, as for my own reasons this Mariner will be one that got better known post war. I am thinking however about learning a new skill and making my own clear parts.

Arki, yes I'm sticking to the kit markings and going pretty much OOB.  So far I've only picked up the Tamiya detail up set for the kit which has some nice little bits to it, but I'm trying to avoid AMS on this one. I've never had an issue using Tamiya decals and I think I will go for Option A which is the box art (I think).

Karl strange you should mention Call of Duty: World at War, because I was playing that last night on the Xbox 360 for a little inspiration, great game btw. 

Gary sorry to rain on your parade but the Flying Tigers operated from China which is CBI and not valid for this build.

Bill you've been updated and that sounds like it's going to be an awesome build.

Where did I get that?

For some reason I was thinking the AVG operated in the south pacific after they were absorbed (reinstated...reinlisted...replaced?) into/by the USAAF. I must have drifted off onto the Boyington tangent. (That's what I get for reading wikipedia at work!)

I could change to a Lt. Welch at Pearl Harbor P-40B easily.

Works for me.  I have the Eduard PE set and Ultracast seat, but that's it.  I'm not sure how much of the PE I'll use either.  Sometimes PE is great, and then there are the other times.

Guys I think I've got everyone in the roster so far but have a check please and just make sure I haven't either forgotten you (sorry Carlos) or got your build wrong.

This weekend I'll try and put a GB badge together and I'm thinking of using the image of the US Marines hauling the flag aloft on Iwa Jima as that's the most iconic image of the Pacific war that I can think of.  If you have any other suggestions please post the image and I'll see what I can do.

Gary can you tell what make and scale P-40B you'll be doing, is it the Trumpeter kit?

Tha badge sounds good Darren!!!! Just a suggestion tho, was wondering if you could siamese the shots of the smoke billowing up from Pearl with the raising of the flag. Sort of a start and finish motif type doovy.

Same kit - the RM 1/48. Just going to pick up the aeromaster markings.

The RM kit is a old mold and needs some minor scratchbuild/correction work in the cockpit & wheel wells.  I haven't done any scratch work on a plane yet (just cars & armor) so this looked like a good kit to start on. 

Charles....forgot you got an inside track on Japanese issues...!!! Im going to do a Rufe after the Seiran.....does your the Zero guide have any cool paint schemes..and cockpit pics...??

AS for room....you know I got it....anytime my freind!!!!hahahha

The barrels came today for the Mariner from Quickboost, and the Falcon canopies for the Privateer.

Carlos: There are a couple of B&W photos of the float versions, but the paint schemes seemed pretty mundane on these. If you do a land based Zero, there are several pretty cool mottle schemes that would be right up your alley!

As for cockpit photos, there are a couple color ones I can scan for you, but they are for the Type 54 bird at the Imperial War Museum in Tokyo.

i'll do what I can, Darson. I'm far from an expert but I have some pretty neat, unique references.

Jay: I picked up a neat publication called "不滅の零戦", or Immortal Zero which has a lot of detail on the Zero. I have another more general book which covers Japanese warbirds from 1930-1945 as well.

Muker Thanks on the tile. I have a couple differnent books on Japanesse aircraft.

Summit the Myrt is one cool plane and a great model, you should really enjoy it

I have a book I picked up whilst stationed on Guam called, Japanese Aircraft of the Pacific War by Rene J. Francillon! Very informative book!!!

Bill thanks for that recipe, the Humbrol thinners really added that little extra something to it . I have no words to describe that shirt though and unfortunately (or fortunately) I have nothing in my collection that even remotely matches that.

Charles thanks for that, the sort of thing I'm looking for is cockpit, wheel well flap interior colors.

Sean no problems I've added you to the roster but as this build will be going for a long time you'll have plenty of time to finish the Myrt.

Albert-  What a Fantastic expierence... when I was vacationing in San Fran. a few years ago there was a Boy Scout Troop staying the night at Alcatraz.... Whish I could of done stuff like that when I was a kid.

I went to the USS Pampanito every day as I could not get enough.  I have always wanted to model it myself. I can hardly wait to see your progress . 

Great subject to model, and take your time. Bear in mind that she's a Balao Class, a heavier version of the Gato. So you'll want to research the external differences, plus all subs were unique in detail. The Fairbanks "Opie" is my alltime favorite internal combustion engine- two pistons per cylinder. It had an illustrious career in railroads as well.

Welcome aboard, the Captain will show you a berth, although you may have to hot-bunk with Sean! GB's are FUN!

Mo welcome aboard matey, the Wildcat from Tamiya is one their best IMHO and builds up into a great looking model.  Are you going OOB or are you going to throw some AM goodies at it?

Albert welcome to our build and welcome to your first GB, we'll be privileged indeed to watch one of those enormous Gato class subs coming together.  Also, don't worry about time as we've gotta whole year to watch your build come together.

Ahhh the old Fairbanks-Morse locomotives!!! Wish I could have heard what they sounded like!! Two pistons per cylinder??? How does that work, and what shape were the pistons???

If I've got a year think a good number of these might get done.  Put me down for the Rufe, George and TBM for sure.  The Rufe will be done in a week or so, but I'll hold off posting pics until we start.
