Frank great job on the stand.

One question why the tapeing of the wheelwells now. I usually tape it like that after the bottom is painted?

LOL, you probably did!  Be careful though, there are folks out there offering cheap imitations that are nothing more than toothpicks stuck into a piece of styrofoam.

Jason,

Usually I just spray the wheelwells to proper color, then mask them and paint the lower colors.  But on this Zero, the wheelwells are going to get a coat of lacquer-thinner gloss black, Alclad II NMF, and finally a coat of clear blue green.  I thought about spraying all of those, then painting over the overspray, but didn't know how the light gray would cover all of those coats.  So, I masked the wells and when they are finished, mask them again from the gray undersides.  Hope that helps explain it!

See?  There IS a madness to my method. Laugh [(-D]

Frank - Great technique with the toothbrush handles! Guess I'll have to start going to the dentist.

I finally got a good chunk of build time in yesterday. Got the wings on and used about a tube and a half of putty to smooth the seams. By the time I finished it was dark so I didn't get any pictures. Mostly putty and primer work anyway.

I got some detail painting done on the exhaust. I also managed to squeeze the fuselage hard enough to pop the IP loose. I hadn't mounted the nose yet so I discovered drinking straws make great CA applicators in long skinny little places.

Next up for me is finishing the body and getting to paint. The first storm of the season is coming in tonight so that pretty much wipes out painting for this week. I'll probably start work on the final details instead.

Geez, it seem like forever that ive been on this build. Thx to the prayers from Frank, I heard em Buddy, shes done. I had nightmares throughout and really wanted to bin the thing. But im a Brit, and we never give up, Yeah right. I would love to know what the english version of Windex is. What i thought it was ate through the paint. Involving a partial respray, Boo. Anyhoo, heres some pics, starting with the repaired wingfold,

As the plasic had broken fairly unevenly, i used the 'Hot pin' method of marking the centre,

after it was marked i drilled a hole the same dia as a paperclip, my rod of choice,

which, hopefully, as you can see, worked a treat,

Im fairly sure i made a few errors here and there, but I did enjoy the build in the end. Thx Frank for your pics and encouragement. I filled in the step in the Stbd side inner flap. Was that right btw? I made a semi educated guess.

Guy- Glad to hear those prayers worked!  And boy, did they ever!  Sublime work on this baby, I wanna take it up for a spin!  It does start up, right?  Sure looks like the real deal to me.  BTW, good call on filling the step in the inner starboard flap section, those didn't appear until later models. Thumbs Up [tup]

Finally, I found back this forum! Pfoei!!!

I started to build an Akagi diorama, placed during the battle of Midway. The material is all in my house, only has to be placed to the dio!

First off course find out the right colors. The fusilage of the ship is not so hard, light grey. The deck however is another issue. There are only drawings, other models and black/white photo's. From these B/W pics I could see the deck has a light color, like unpainted wood. Most of drawings are dark brown, so at the end I made a mix of red-brown and desert yellow.

The bridge of the akagi is protected with sandbags. To make these sandbags, scale 1:700, I know nicer jobs, but at the end you got somethingTongue [:P]. I opened a door in the bridge so the crew can walk in and out. Smile [:)]

Tonight I make the waves of the ocean so the ship can be in the water. Next step is the dogfights of the US planes against the Zero. Some of the US planes will be in the water, exploding. I place the scene just before the US-divebombers place there bombs in the elevators.

If anyone can tell me how to upload pictures I can show how it looks...

Hi Duiker, to post pics up you need an Online photo account. I use www.photobucket.com. Once you have registered (Its free btw) Start by creating an album name for your build. saves time finding pics in the future and you can open a new album for subsequent builds. Then you just scroll down to find 'Upload Images and video'. Find where your pics are on the computer and D/L them. Once youve d/l ed them, you get the option to name them. I personally dont, but go for it if you want to. To post the pics, you will see if you put the mouse over the picture, 4 options appear underneath. The one you want is the 'IMG code' Right click on this and then copy and paste in here. There you go. Thats all. Get those pics up.

In my previous posting I asked for a way to show pics. Thanks Luftwoller!

Tonight I painted the flydeck partly, the sea and waves will follow next week.

More to come...

(changed the links so the pics can be seen here. Thanks for the tips on that!)

I'll have to page through the last 10 pages and see what else I missed.

SHe's coming along tremendously, Jason! Wow! I built the same markings a few years ago and learned that friends of another forum-goer (waynebaker) actually knew the family of the pilot in Lodi, OH.

I love the lines on the razorback.

Good morning all.  I took a week off in Hawaii and am just getting back to the workbench.  The pics I've seen so far of your work are incredible!  Nice job fellas!  I have an affinity towards the Jug and love the way that P-47 is turning out.

I snapped some inspirational pics of the Arizona, Missouri, Oklahoma Memorial, USS Bowfin, Ford Island (Which I thought was interesting in that the hangers on the island were left as-is from the attack, shattered windows and bullet holes included), and the Pacific Aviation Museum.  I'll post some pics.

I'll head back to the bench this weekend.  I have the Jill ready to mask and paint and am still plugging away at the big 1/32 Avenger. I've included some pics of the Jill's cockpit.

Some more mighty fine work on display here.  I managed to get a little done on the Zero and the Corsair yesterday.  Finished the Aotake coating in the gear bays, then masked and painted the dark slate gray on the Corsair (took a whole stick of Handy Tac and nearly an entire roll of Tamiya tape!).  Some more shading is needed on the Corsair, then I can remove the masks.  Here's how they look:

Painted the flight deck of the Akagi. Probebly the paint was a bit to thin so it did go under the tape. Now I got a browm flightdech with beautiful white spots... (I allmost start to cry...)

Back to the drawing board, start over again with the painting of the fligh deck.

By the way, next saturday there are the Dutch Nationals. I hope to be there with the Akagi-diorama.

Frank. Great work and pics as weve all come to expect. The Aotake looks great. I dont know if ive ever seen a colour image of the real deal. Do you have one knocking about in your immense reference library? Or anyone for that matter.
