ME-262: Reich Defender II 10/09-7/10

Well it arrived today. The second kit for my twin Me 262 build. This kit is the 1990's MPM Me 262 A-1a/U4 The one with the 50MM Mauser sticking out of the nose.

The Kit

Its an older kit with some relatively nice detail considering its age but there is quite a bit of flash that will need to be cleaned up.

The kit actually comes with some nice extras like 2 1/2 sheets of Photo Etch and a Vacuform Canopy

The Extras

Since this is going to be a twin build and I just happen to have a set of 18 month old twins myself I decided that each bird will be named after one of my twins. It'll be easier then constantly deciphering between A-1a/U4 and the B-1a/U1.

From here on out the B-1a/U1 Night Fighter by Revell will be called Delaney after my daughter and the A-1a/U4 by MPM with the "Big Cannon" will be named after my son Beckett.

To bad Mike but from the looks of those picks I would have to agree with the adjuster. She looks like a write off. Older S/10 just do not have much of a blue book value. At least ambye she will live on after the salvage yard picks of the good parts and resells them!

Hey Jeremy,

 Took the ol Sonoma down to my friends body shop to get an estimate.. Just looking at the cosmetic work alone and not any internal issues... $4700..

 An adjuster from my insurance agency stopped over to have a look see... Sad to say she may be written off... Ugh..

 Had her since new and she never looked a day past a year old...

Rangers Lead The Way

They are'nt to bad unless the upper ball joint falls apart and tucks the tire up in the wheel well. Have them inspected if you have'nt yet seriously!  Fixed a bunch of those. Then you just have to make sure you dump some STS fuel treament to make sure the injector popetts do'nt clog up. Man I worked on alot of those S10/Blazers. I think I have replaced just about evry part you can on a S/10. I should have known you were a parts guy Jeremy. I did a 7 year stint running a huge Jeep/Chrylser parts department in Ft Lauderdale in the 90's. I got sick of dealing with morons so I went back to turning wrenches. The cars don't back or ask stupid questions!

Ha - I actually know this as I spent about a week reading everything to find out myself. 

From what I read the torque scissors were only mounted on the "early production Me 262A-1a and Me 262A-2a fighter- bombers"

The scissor point faced aft

 Sorry that I have been not around these parts in the last few days... Been under the weather Wow, I am really really impressed with what I am seeing!!

 Totally getting the itch again(ah I must be feelin better)... I do have a few question though, I have noticed that almost every reference pix I have, the 262 does not have the front scissor set up on the front LG.. Was this common practice?

 Also, if I were to reposition the front tire and if the scissor was attached to the olie, would it follow the tires rotation?

 Oh yea.... One other question.... Do you think Tamiya Putty & a lil Mr Surfacer would do the trick?

I bet not everyday you meet someone who was hit by an Alavanche and lived to tell about it.. Lol.. Long story.. It was her fault and she admitted it to the authorities and most of all, no one was hurt.. And yes my lil guy was home...

Thanks to all - the Mono 262 followers , I have officially hit a wall with my building skills.  The rear wheels have/had a molded in brake line. Attempts to remove it were sastisfactory but to replace the missing three spokes were not to my liking. As it saddens me to say - I will be ordering Resin replacement wheels. All this way with no aftermarket.. Anyway I would of Happily broken that rule for a replacement canopy but none are to be found for any 1/48 kit. (least by my sources)

Aaron- belated Happy Birthday!!!

Guy- Bummer!  You're right, some resin stuff just doesn't fit that well.  I think most of the items you see are at least pretty good but I've seen other items that are identical to the ones in the kit, like they used the ones in the kit as a master and then tried to sell it as an upgrade.

Lord Moustachio (Sean) After i posted the last one i went back up to the modelling den and attacked it with Gusto (Whoever he is). Im going to do away with the longer insert altogether and fashion some styrene strip in there to make the inner piece. I think that will be a bit easier than reusing the old bits i cut off. Ive already done this part and ill try to sort the links to the rollers later on. Ill post some pics up later. Im off tomorrow, so more done then.

Frank, You have to watch a lot of these resin kits. Some of the pieces ,Like my cockpit set, have been around for a few years and, im sure, the molds are starting to suffer. And resin shrinks over time. I bought LE slats for my Swordfish, from MDC, who are well known for thier excellent resin. The bits i got were short too. But luckilly he replaced them. He said that after my call he smashed the molds and made new ones. Good eh? But i cant see CMK doing that though LOL,

Guy- I can't believe they would sell something that fits that poorly!  Not like it is only a tiny bit short, looks like they goofed big time there.  If I know you, you'll have it whipped back into shape by this afternoon and working just like the real thing with scale linkages and rollers.

Sean- You are building at Guy's pace here!  Looking very good indeed.  That tip on wicking CA into the card stock, sounds like an R/C tip.

Man Guy that is a major bummer. With your manly mojo I am sure you will come up with a fix for it. I have not seen you defeated by any model kit yet! Did you find out if it is just a bad product or for a differnet kit?

Sean looks like some nifty work there.

I have spend only a couple of hours at the bench but these Tamiya kits go together so easy I already have the fuselage all closed up and the wings assembled. I dry fit the wing assembly to the fuselage and the fit is one of the best I have ever seen. Absolutely perfect! Busy today watching my niece today. I will be back at the bench tomorrow.

I decided to fill them up after looking at reference pics and adding a little modelers improvision.

 Yep thats a piece of notecard as I did not have any styrene thin enough for the upper lip. I wicked it with thin C/A to make it sturdy .

Hi all, im working on the LE slats and have come up to a stumbling block. The resin pieces are just wrong. They fit well and look good,

but the moveable part doesnt sit flush to the wing, but when fitted in place it is raised above the wing,

Ive checked a walkaround video and they come out flush with the wing. Me thinks some modifications are in order, Check out the vid at 6:12 and you'll see what i mean.

The longer L/E slats are just wrong. Well the insert piece is. For one its too short,

and secondly, the rod roller thingies underneath, dont line up with the holes in the wing. I think this part has seriously shrunk or its made for another kit,

The resin moveable piece is the right size? Crazy eh.

Geez louise, you guys are darn near finished and I only just placed my order for the kit today.

This'll be the first time I didn't finish a GB that hasn't started yet .  Who do we have to thank for getting this thing started a month ahead of schedule ?

Hopefully, I'll be finished with the major construction of my Sherman by week's end and painted and ready for weathering by the end of the weekend.  Just picked up a few tubes of oil paints for a dot filter wash (have to learn to do it someday, might as well be now).  Then I hope to start the 262 by middle of next week (hooray for vacation).
