Italeri also makes a T-62 which seems pretty good too. I've also been eying up ACE's BMP-1 and 3s too.

As for the books, I'll look for Michener's book; I really liked the Bridges over Toki-ra (only behind Salter's The Hunters to me as a great flying novel) and this should be good. Coll's is a great account of this period with some really good stories you might enjoy if you liked Unger's work. There's this story of a Mujahideen commander wearing a silver Russian high altitude fighter suit on a broken down bike meeting with a CIA operative at the dead of night which I found memorable.

HSteve: If you need a few extras for your Su-25, I have a small fret of FAB-500 bombs and some drop tanks from an old Kopro kit that I built as a kid, which I don't mind parting with. Its a bit crude but with a bit of work it would give you some more options if you want them.

B-man I haven't come across anything about it but I'll keep my eyes peeled... its really striking how poorly covered the region was during the 1990s. Have you by chance read Coll's Ghost Wars or Stewart's the Places in Between?

I like the image, but the copy is kinda funky, and Mikey speaks the language, after all...

I flocked up and started on my BTR 152 APC and BTR 152 Command vehicle. Oops, just got excited...

Hey the BTR-60 is still enroute and I will hold that till 12/1/09.

Busy looking up cool cammo. Overall brown dust seems to be the order of the day.

Here's a question. If you read Sebastian Ungers article "Fire", he told a story of how the Northern Alliance built a bus from a shot-down helo, maybe an MI-8 and drove it around. I'd love to get more info on that.

Best books: Frederick Forsythe "Lie Down With Lions". James Michener "Caravans".

Hmmm well that badge didn't seem to be too much of a winner, oh well stuff happens.  The image by the way is a couple of abandoned T-55s left behind by retreating Soviet forces at Bagram air base.

Good news though on the 1/35 T-55 front though, I got an email last night that the set of Modelkasten tracks that I ordered have been shipped Propeller [8-]

Hmmm....I don't know. It doesn't really "scream" the Soviet-Afghan War. However, when I get some of my badges done(hopefully later this week) we'll have a vote on all the badges to decide which one's we'll keep, wether it be one or all of them. Hope this sounds good to everyone.

So I've been doing a bit of digging around and I found a set of Bison Decals for you 1/35ers for Soviet occupation and later mujahideen tanks (1989 to 2001)

Soviet Tanks
Airborne Units

Afghan tanks 1
Afghan tanks 2

Thought it might be a cool option.

Its okay, though I don't like the stylized latin/cyrillic script, it doesn't feel russian.

Some Russian sites have great images we could use like this one:

Russian soldier's art

Never personally used a Blast Models set, but it looks pretty good. Since you do get an engine deck, mantlet cover, and lots of hatch options. Should make your T-55 really *pop*.Wink [;)]

I've got a turret for a Tiger 1 E by blast, and it looks awesome! Very nice detail, good casting, and accurate. I havn't installed it yet, but test-fitting was almost perfect. I think you've got an awesome set there.

Michael I really like the sound of this build, it's something a little bit out of the ordinary so count me in.

I've got a Tamiya T-55A and I'm currently hunting for some Model Kasten tracks for it and a few other bits and pieces so I should be good to go come Dec.

Well, I've always wanted to do a T-62 from the movie, "The Beast" Awesome movie! My only issue is finding a T-62 I can afford. I may join up in the future if I can dig up a kit, and School/other GB's don't swallow me up. Anyway, awesome idea!

mg.,

It's amazing how overlooked this A/C was; The -25 was at least as agile at lower speeds as the A-10, better armoured, and faster top speed( There will be folks clamouring for proof)....

I'm still looking for aftermarket bits, but very hard to find in '/72...

The RoG kit is on my hit list, I'll find out if my LHS has it first...

BTW, Anything you have as far as refernce  matl's  always appreciated!

I'll PM...

Not sure yet what scale/manufacture - will depend what I find and can afford.  I'll take a look at what Squadron might have as well.

I'm going to build the RoG 1/72nd scale - Have you come up with ideas? Not a lot of aftermarket stuff, but a very interesting aircraft!

Good to have you aboardBig Smile [:D]

Do a forum search for "photobucket" and you'll learn plenty! It's pretty easy to do.

Got my T-62 from Trumpeter today. Have to say it looks pretty darn good.

Detail is looking great. The kit has clear plastic vision blocks, a bit of PE (to include a cable that looks great), a metal gun barrel, and seperate tires for the road wheels. Instead of being vinyl they are just seperate plastic parts.

The delecate parts in the kit are also wrapped in protective foamlike material right on the sprue. Never seen that before.

The downside that I can see would only be that there appears to be obly one configuration represented in the decals and provided paint scheme. Its Soviet and its green or your on your own here.

If anyone cares I can try to post some pictures of it later on. I have never posted any here before so I guess I need to learn how before we all get started in Dec.

All in all I am really excited. Next to the Dragon M1A1 AIM I have sitting in my closet this looks to be the best kit I have ever seen. Having only been into this for a year now that may not mean a whole lot but for me I can't wait to get going.

I haven't thought about it. There's a flock of them on eBay. I'll probably see what the LHS has. I need a twist, don't know what yet. Maybe a captured one in Northern Alliance or some such.
