Those colors would look great on a MiG-21, Mikey! The MiG is a beautiful plane and I would love  to see it with a red and white checkered nose. Yes

A little bit of foolin' around here. Big Smile I did some filing and sanding on the rear of a fuselage half to try and correct the shape of it. The area was too large. Notice the original part on the right... the fuselage lines toward the back of the plane at an angle like they will meet each other and then they kind of straighten out and level off before they reach the exhaust opening. The left one is the corrected fuselage half. Notice how the lines in the fuselage stay at the same angles all the way to the rear of the plane. It needs a little fine tuning but it looks right.

It took alot of filing, sanding and eye-balling to get her in that shape. Good thing the plastic is really thick! Now I have to do the other side. Black Eye

Ok ive come up with a plan for my MIG, ill be doing a fantasy/whatif paint scheme on it. Ill be painting her in the RNZAF 1970's harvard red checkers scheme. something like this

But a mig21PFM lol

So, colours will be

Light Grey body

Red Wingtips and tail.

Red and white Checkered nose with red intake spike

Flat black Antiglare strip

RNZAF roundels and numbering

From what i understand this is a nice easy kit. cant wait to get started. Not much filling, but lots of weight in the nose. The intake spike needs to be shortened by about 1/16th on an inch (can anyone put this in metric for me?) Otherwise its a very nicley detailed kit. hopefully i can get started next week sometimes.

 Finding a slightly used J47 shouldn't be TOO hard!!Whistling

Uh huh... Confused

Hopefully I can find something in resin so that I don't have to use another kit. Unless I fudge it a little, I'll have to start looking at some F-86 options.

Love that badge Mikey! Yes

Okay... I managed to get a start on my XF-91 and, so far, things aren't going as planned. Dead

I want to replace the nose with the nose from a Tamiya F-84 kit, so I started by marking my cut and taking the saw to it...

Here's the new F-84 nose mocked up next to the XF-91 nose...

By my measurements, this thing was supposed to be a perfect fit, so I cut the nose off of the XF-91 and that's where things went wrong. What I neglected to take into consideration was the shape of the two pieces. The XF-91 has a round profile looking at it head on where the F-84 is kind of oval shape. Not good! What I ended up doing was gluing the nose back on the XF-91 and adding the nose ring and intake trunking from the F-84. I wanted the whole nose from the F-84 so that I could use the cockpit also but instead I just used some sprue to make a mounting point for the F-84 cockpit.

And here's the new nose job... and some scars too! Whistling What have I gotten myself into?!

Next order of business is to find her an engine!

Sorry for all the pics! Toast

Alright... here's the plan. Wink

You remember the kit, right?

It is horrible! No cockpit, no engine, no nuthin'! While digging through the stash the other day, I might have found a glimmer of hope or at least some help anyway.

I figure that I can rob some essential parts from the Tamiya F-84. Since Republic built the the straight wing F-84 before the F-84F and the XF-91 came between the two, I think that I can safely steal from this kit. Blind Fold  I should be able to use the cockpit at least but what I really want to do is use the nose from the Tamiya kit. The intake on the Lindberg XF-91 looks too large and if I can graft on the F-84 nose it should bring it down to size. Plus I'll have some intake trunking so that you can't see right through the model. Surprise

What I need to come up with is something to represent the jet engine in the back. I tried digging through the stash again to see what could fit and all I came up with was the Academy SU-27 engine looked about the right size but I'm not robbing from that kit. I'll have to figure something out though. The rocket engines should be easy enough by just adding tubing in the rear.

I plan to scratch build gear wells and rescribe and rerivet the whole airframe. Lots of work to do! Black Eye

That's my game plan and hopefully I can get started soon.

Wish me luck!

Updated build requirments (nothing major) new start date. 1st May. And now lack of WIP photos is no longer a punishable offence Wink lol

Start date change is mainly because this mig is staring me in the face and begging to be built and i have a rattle can of silver glaring at me every night lol. Also thought 1st of june was still a little too far away and people might forget.

You dont have to choose right right now, i can put you down as blank and when you work out which kit you want to contribute ill put it down, youve got a while to choose. or as i say you can do all three if you think youll have time to complete them all

Looks like an interesting group build... count me in! Cool

My weapon of choice is going to be the old Lindberg 1/48 XF-91.

She's going to need alot of work to be brought up to snuff, but a years time should cut it.

Check it out here... very interesting aircraft! Yes
