Sufa Resurrection

Stuffed myself with turkey...took a little snooze while watching football...then stole some time to play with my Sufa.  New primer laid down and pre-shading completed....next-->new camo and under belly paint.

OWL, looing good.

Well, after sitting in the man cave and working on a kit, the call of the Viper was heard off in the distance.  A little voice told me that I can still remedy my Sufa, so I am going to regroup.  I already fixed the canopy and will start the paint job from scratch...today, I will spray primer over my current paint scheme and fix the pre-shading omission the first time around.  I will then use some finesse on the camo to eliminate that pastel look I currently have.

I am not going to let this kit beat me....

I've just learned the hard way that MM Flat cannot be hand brushed.  Bad things happen. Zip it!

But thanks to help from other members of this forum, I was able to get things fixed. Here is what happened:

Luckily a very very light sanding got most of the flakes out and smoothed it down, and a coat of Future brought back the clarity.  I just have to wait for the future to cure again before I can move on to the next steps.

I just realized I for got to take a pic with all the decals on....so I took one with the wash applied!  I used a dark gray mixed with black for the gunship gray areas and a gunship gray wash for the light colored areas. I haven't actually used an acrylic wash yet, so lets see how it goes!!

oh, and the decals went on great! They are from Superscale, great register, perfect adhesion...the only trouble I had was user error.

Sorry about your bad luck build Hutch.  Good idea to cut your losses.  Like you said, it should be fun not frustrating.  Thats a shame.  It was such a good build.

I plan on building Tamiya's F-16 in aggressor colors too.  Which scheme were you planning?

I was thinking of the Alaska Black-Gray-White....I think that looks sharp...the various blues work for me too....

ooooh, Aggressor scheme?  those are too cool! Wink

maybe after you've calmed down a bit, you can salvage the Sufa. Strip the paint and get a new canopy?

Ever have a cursed build?  Well, I've given up on my Sufa.  I had just one disaster after another on this one.  Last weekend, my 48-hour Weekend Madness build went off flawlessly.  I have two other builds in work and they are going very smoothly.  But my Sufa is a different story.  A few weeks ago, I mentioned problems with the wash I had unexpectedly biting into the paint...that's never happened to me before, so that must have been a sign of things to come.  I had countless other show-stoppers making me stop to do major repairs and modifications.  The final straw was this evening when I noticed major damage to the canopy, after I had removed the mask.  I have no idea what happened (cracked and scratched), and I just threw my arms up in the air.  I threw the plane in the box and shoved it in the corner.

When the fun stops and turns to deep frustration, that is when I cut my losses.

I want to remain in this build and will start my Tamiya F-16 Agressor over the holidays...I've always liked that paint pattern.

On a side note, there is nothing wrong with the 1:48 Kinetic Sufa.  All the problems I encountered had to do with Murphy's Law and my own stupid mistakes.

with too much time on my hands, I was able to detail and paint the landing gear a bit. The plane itself is  chillin' in a desk drawer while the future cures in preparation for decals. I decided on the bird form the 180th FW from Ohio. It has a nice hornet on its tail. I'll save to golden California ANG decals for a later kit.

Owl, nice fix on the gear bays and the detailing as well.  Don't feel too alone.  Most of us are watching your build but have to much on the plate to join in.

Travis, I hope all is well with your wife.

Owl: I am just going to chalk it up to you having more time than me and the other builders!Embarrassed I am happy to say I finally finished one of my other builds. In the last week I have been dealing with a fried laptop, broke washing machine, and the wife having a surgery.....needless to say I am looking at my Thanksgiving Holiday with some real hope! Please keep up the good work. This build last for a year so I know there will be more to come!

chrip chirp...all I hear are crickets!!  Huh?

I've applied both colors to my Viper, and it now has a layer of Future curing before I get started on decals!  I have also started detailing the landing gear with wire and what not. Those pics will be up soon!

I did not do much pre-shading due to this being a demonstration bird. I reckon those are kept decently clean.

I'm going to go home this weekend, which means paint! Smile  I managed to get the splitter-thing installed inside the intake. I had forgotten to put it in there before I glued it together....and it was an exercise in patience getting it in the right spot! SO here is where I am right now:

I noticed that the piece separating the main-gear bays was not thick enough for some reason and left one heck of a step!! Si I added shims of plastic under it to get it to sit flush.

I added some more detail to the gear bays: a bit of wire and styrene again. The intake was assembled form 3 different pieces, which made getting the mouth seamless was a bit tricky because I wasn't able to get my sandpaper in there very well. I got it as smooth as I could with the sanding paper, then proceeded to use thick layers of paint to smooth things down. Enough paint and that little seam disappeared!

Good advice.  I had the brown wash in my hand and opted for the black.  Oh well, still learning, after all these years.

If you are worried about it looking too stark, next time maybe use a Grey or dark brown? That wash does seem to dirty it up a bit!!

I used MM enamels...but they were flat, so I put an enamel gloss coat over it...guess I need at to be a bit thicker.  All is not lost...aircraft now has some depth to it and it isn't that bad.  Probably being just picky.

As you can see, not too bad....I will probably opt to touch up a few areas to take away the overly dirty looking areas.

well, if it looks good..call it a happy accident!

I finished up those darned assignments and finally got a bit of bench time: I decided to drop the flaps on this bird. That means surgery! Pretty easy, but I noticed that there was now a gap between the fuselage and flap which should not be there. So I attached a plastic wedge and sanded it to fit. It does not look too bad now! (you can still see some of the wing seams in these pictures. Yes, I'm still am working on those!)

Uh-oh! What was the paint job in, Enamel or Acrylics? If you use a wash, it is recommended that you use the opposite of the paint job: enamel paint job=acrylic wash, acrylic paint job=enamel wash!

AWWWWKK!!!  I tried using a black Promodeler wash on my Sufa to give it some depth and some of the wash ate into the paint job.  I cleaned it up a bit, but it is starting to look like a "dirty bird."

Owl- Your build is coming along nicely! I know what you are saying. I have been trying to get startedon at least one of my builds. It just seems that I have been so busy fixing stuff that has been breaking on a weekly basis in my home. Dryer 2 weeks ago and the water heater last week. Maybe tomorrow!

hutchdh, Nice job on the camo of  your Sufa!   Those CFT's really make the Viper look that much more aggressive.

CallSignOwl, Your build is progressing nicely.  That Academy kit seems to be quite a bear.  Your making it look easy though.  Nice job.

I have bit off more than I can chew with these Group Builds.  I have to finish a couple before I can get started on this one.  I will stop in from time to time to see how everything is going.
