You guys got me thinking about my former career, when I was a graphics arts content

designer. I dug up some old files, a few of thousands:

My portrait of 9/11, I called it 'Big City Blues':

Man, still hurts to look at it.

Here is my self portrait:

Here is a portrait of my boss at the University:

Note the smooth transition between electro-quantum switching and standard jellyfish neuronal architectures.

That was him alright.

Mike: Thanks! Bookmarked the site for when I get the game back out again.

Dom: Wow, that's some psychedelic looking art there! And yeah I remember 'Sword of Fargoal'. Never played it in my C-64 days but I remember seeing it in the store. Probably can find a copy on the internet that will run in DosBox today.

Hi Dom,

That is pretty cool art man!  I don't have any artistic talent like that, so I am envious.  The one artistic talent I do have is music.  I used to be a really good drummer, played in some good local bands.  But finally got tired of the fighting and discord and gave it up.  I wish now that I had stayed with it but as a studio performer until the right group of people came along.  As they say, hind sight is always 20/20!

Dom, you just threw my brain back to the Psychodelic 70s...  Like wow man... Seriously, awesome work.

Anyways, someone asked for some better images of the B58, so I took a couple more.

I hope the needle probe lasts longer than it did on my first kit.  On that one, my little sister broke it off to try and pry her barbie doll's head out of the bathroom sink drain before Mom and Dad found out.  She was going to tape it back on she said... ARGH!!!

Ya know.  I just thought of something.  Remember the Dehavilland Comet.  The one that had a tendency to explode in mid air and they discovered it was from micro cracks induced when the square windows were riveted together at the factory....  Well, the B58 also has square windows.  I wonder if it had stayed in service longer and in larger numbers, would it have had the same issue...  Hmmm.....

Gents:

Many thanks for the compliments and kind words,

very much appreciated!

It was the modeling that got me into art, and now

I'm back, model building has staying power for me.

Ken, if I ever get any music out there, I'll call....lol

Rich: that turned out real nice. The paint finish looks

as though you worked hard on the weathering, nice effect.

Yeah, little sisters.....they lit a 'campfire' in my basement bedroom when

i was on a Boy Scout weekend, i guess they felt jealous.

My parents, both smokers, didn't even notice until one of my sisters threw my UH1

on and, well, everyone here knows what burning styrene is like.....

The black spot on the ceiling was bad, not to mention the floor tiles.

I did 3-D work, but most of that needs an obsolete ap to open.

I'll see if I can find anyhting this weekend. I developed a project

named Sonica, she was a siren song if ever there was one....

Hey guys,

I came across an interesting masking material today (you all probably already know about it but, anyway...) called Parafilm M. It appears to cling to the plastic without adhesive and can be easily cut to conform to different paint outlines. Says it produces sharp paint separation without bleed-under. I found it at: www.micromark.com/parafilm-m,7551.html.

Cheers,

Sorry.  Brain Freeze.  Badge soon.

Dom, glad you liked it.  It's a technique I call gloss sanding.  I put on a shiny metallic paint, in this case, 1290 Chrome MM.  Then a layer of glosscote, then decals, then another layer of glosscote.  Aftyer that, I use a superfine sandpaper and give it a good scratching.  Make sure your sanding follows the aerodynamics of the plane or it will look weird.  After that another layer of glosscote and then buff when it's set for about 10 hours.  Let it dry and thats what it looks like.  If you do it right, you can even simulate the un smooth imperfections an airframe gets after a few dozen flights.  It's hard to see in the images though, but it really showed nicely on the front of the weapons pod where the skin starts to deform from air buffeting in supersonic flight.

Thanks Russ!  I think I have seen that advertised before.  I have never tried it.  Maybe someone else here has and can comment on it.  It looks pretty good.  If no one else has tried it I am willing to give it a try and see how it goes.

Russ;

Thanks for the link.

GladWrap came out with a special wrap that would stick to itself to make a perfect seal, that was about 10 years back or so.

I know some guys experimented with it. This looks like a similar product but more refined for

the modeling market. I am going to get some.

Anyone here know where a guy can get a couple Monogram F-84F canopies in 1/48?

I'll take any brand in 1/48 and scratch them into place if necessary.

Rich: She looks awesome! Love the B-58, she's one of those planes that look like she's going Mach 5 just sitting on the tarmac. And love the crazy red accents over the aluminum. Although now I'm picturing a B-58 with a giant Barbie head stuck on the nose probe like a giant's head on a pike!

Dom: That sounds pretty cool, would like to see anymore art you'd be able to post.

Guys, I used Parafilm over a decade ago in a former lab job. The stuff is made to seal flasks and other glassware in chemical labs. Interesting stuff, it's much thicker than kitchen wrap and can be stretched to over five times or so it's length making it great for sealing things. Hadn't heard of it being of use in modeling back then or I'd swiped some to take home and try out.

I searched for it on eBay.  There are several vendors that sell it.  Different widths and lengths with different shipping charges.  So you have a choice.

That would be great.  I have to use all my spare cash for Marissa's Band stuff for school, so I don't even get my normal $20 in August.. Oh well.  She better become the next Louie Armstrong with all this band stuff costs.  I just paid off the trumpet last January. lol   It could be worse I suppose...  Any idea what a decent keyboard costs nowadays, or a drum set or ... gulp..  A violin.....

Well Rich;

You are lucky, she could be asking for hockey equipment....lol

Let me know what tape you want.

After i saw that masking job you did on the Hustler, I figured you

are a guy who could really use a masking innovation.

Cliff has used this stuff before, sounds great, especially the fact

that you can stretch it to conform to the shape.

I saw a program once, and the little company, probably out of business, had these paint detail guys

and they offered an idea that seems to work, at least it did for me.

They said that the trick to masking is simple:

you mask to keep an area from being sprayed, not to keep it under tape

until the paint dries. What does that mean?

If you want a perfect edge, don't give the paint time to bleed in the first place.

Peel off the masking tape immediately after spraying.

This guy had a blue stripe masked all the way down a beautiful Cessna.

He sprayed the blue, and within seconds, was peeling the masking tape off.

He said that if you let the paint dry, it gives it time to allow capillary action to

build up a paint fillet in the corner between the surface and the tape.

He always sprayed then peeled.

The paint doesn't have time to bleed, and does the opposite of forming a fillet;

the paint draws away from the edge, giving a crisp, unraised edge, free of bleeding.

How do you do that?

The mask must be readily and easily 'pullable' from the surface.

Since you are dealing with wet paint, if you pull and it doesn't give,

or you smudge the fudge, you are judged.

Anyhow, did that on ship hulls cause they are easy, and so far, it works.

Okay, model paint drys faster than aircraft paint, but the bleeding....the bleeding....

"...doctor...doctor...we have all the bandages on.....and it's still bleeding!!!!!"

"...oh for the sake of Rice Crispies....pull the dang bandages off!!!!!!"

Cheers,

Russ

I use Parafilm all the time and that roll will last a life time! Here are my canopies for the RF-4B coated with the film. (Inside frames have been pre-painted) I stretch it, press it into place and then trim with a new fresh #11 hobby blade. It does tend to harden a bit once covered with paint, but it can be carefully removed with a toothpick! I love it!

Haven't used it for camo painting, I discovered Silly Putty for that!

I do need a bit of help with the A-7D: some references, and the AM Airdoc decal sheet I have, call for the intake trunk to be painted either gray or dark-green, depending on the color scheme used, due to the white being too visible. Further in it supposed to be gloss white, but I don't know how far back it would be go. The kit trunk extends back just beyond the rear of the forward landing gear bay. couldn't find any useful photos. I painted the rear wall a very dark gray as it is barely visible in this scale. One reference said about 4' or so.....

*******

On my workbench now:

It's all about classic cars now!

Why can't I find the "Any" key on my keyboard?
