Thanks for the comments. As for the canopy, the hardest part was sealing it up so it didnt leak. The masking was easy enough since its mostly square edges.

As for the panel fit. What you cant see is ive puttied over the styrene filling on the rear portion of that belly panel. Almost all the way along i had to squeeze strips of styrene in to have something to glue it to.

Christchurch. The shaky city, woo. lol.

Was driving back from the doctors before and someones tagged the old science alive building (A place where kids could experience science first hand) In big white letters across the front of the building it says (Spelled just like this) "God must hate sciens" all i can think is, but hang-on, every church in town was damaged to point of destruction, what does that say? (not intending this as inflamitory, just thought it was funny)

Here's the flat bed semitrailer assembled. I still need to add the bomb runners and the 750-lb bombs. Now I'm waiting for the tractor.

Russ,

I can almost smell diesel,,,the wood runners looking realistic with the slight warpage and colours,,,,are you planning to put some air brake hardware and harnesses on that...?

How do you know when to stop detailing:

I'm done with the kit as far as details. Actually, it didn't come with brake hardware which was surprising given the level of detail of the model. The only thing I will add to the trailer is the two wooden runners down the center that the bombs were carried on. I also have an "EXPLOSIVES A" sign to hang off the back end.

Hey Guys,

Here is a preliminary look at the bomb bay doors configured in load position. The detail on the door is only suggestive, not authentic. The only bomb bay detail I'm adding is the catwalk structure along the sides, since that's about all you will be able to see with the plane sitting on the ground

Hi Mikey,

No problem!  I will put together the instructions and send them to you tomorrow.  I have company stopping by in a few minutes so I won't be able to work on it now.

Ken.  Could you shoot me over a copy too?  I found a couple of resin MB7s I had gotten for my black bunny last year, but the loops were damaged in shipping so I have to replace them.

Russ:

that Monogram kit is very different form my Revell kit. There were no bomb bay bulkheads, or 'double door' features in my kit, Nd Mono's plastic is a few thou thicker.....made to be dropped.....

I got to jump up and slap the inside doors of the BUFF at Dayton. When I walked away one of the attendants was rushing towards my location, and I just smiled.....he realized and turned back....lol....

did that fuselage come with the nose cut out like that?

Well, actually there were no bulkheads with mine either, Dom - I made them. And the upper sections of the doors were part of the body until I cut them out. I don't know about the Revell kit (isn't that also Monogram?) but mine had the upper doors outlined . Took a lot of cutting though as the plastic is pretty thick on this one too.

As for the nose, I cut out the chin radome so I could show the nav antenna being worked on. Looks kinda wierd with the radome off, doesn't it? Big Smile. On the real plane, the radome unlatches and slides forward about 2 feet on a track so you can get up inside and work on the equipment mounted on the front pressure bulkhead. If you need to get to the antenna, you have to slide the radome all the way out and set it down on the ground. Takes at least two people to handle it. There is another smaller radome above it in front of the cockpit that held the antenna drive motor and some additional nav stuff, ECM warning sensors and some other whatnot.

Thanks Gam. I can't take any credit for the wood deck - it came with the model. The boards are actually nicely scribbed on the other side but they stand out so much that it looks unrealistic, so I used the back side of the sheets.

Russ;

I thought you were new to model building, but do correct me on that.

I can see how you know the subject and are handy with the materials. You didn't start yesterday, right....lol

When i checked my BUFF I realized I have just enough tolerance left over to cut the upper doors as you have described....I saw them, but never translated that info to the kit, lucky for me you pointed that out. You must have cut about 30 or so little ribs to finish the uppermost section of the belly doors? and re-cut the top hinges?

Russ, where did you get the catwalks, I'm guessing sheet stock, patience, and a drill?

Nice work on the bomb belly and bulkheads, You lined the inside of the lower doors with thin stock sheet right? And How come?

Thanks for explaining the Radome, I guess the Revel and Mono kits are exactly the same tooling after all....What with you in addition to this thread, we are turning into a scratch channel.....

Also, did you put in some scratch just behind the bomb belly, over the rear wheels.....your build is really shaping up man.....I hope you don't mind if I take some of your ideas....

Man, you know how to make a guy feel good! Smile. Thanks for the compliments, bud.

You are correct about the upper door details although not quite that many pieces. I didn't cut any slots in the upper part of the doors because I could never find a picture that showed this area clearly enough. I did cut corresponding slots in the fuselage where I cut out the top sections. I plan to put some thin stock through the slots to represent hinges

You're also correct about the catwalks - they're made from sheet styrene. Three pieces: two drilled and one plain strip for the walkway glued in the shape of a triangle with the walkway on top. If you look closely though, the holes are all over the place in spite of the fact I had the strips all taped toghether and drilled them at the same time. I couldn't control the direction of the drill bit well enough - it all needs to be clamped in a vice with the drill in a drill press to do it correctly.

The lower doors I actually lined with thin cardstock because it was easier to make it conform to the curve of the doors. The reason? All the images I have of these doors show some kind of panelling or padding, I assume for insulation  or possibly cushioning in case a bomb dropped off the rack inside the bay with the doors closed.

As for the scratch over the rear wheel wells - if you mean the thin strip along the fuselage, this was some kind of reinforcement because of the extreme flexing of the tail section. It may have been used to keep the panels from working loose, but I suspect it helped reduce the movement of the tail section during turbulance.

Sorry about the long reply. You're more than welcome to use any of my ideas, my friend, as long as you don't mind me doing  the same with your ideas Smile

Thanks Russ.

I guess I missed that reinforcement part for the tail section, prawely still on the sprues.

The holes look right from 10 feet away, so they are right, look great from here.

Hey man, use anything I post up here, this has been a great thread for ideas.

I have to cut all those little ribs......need BBQ sauce for those.....lol...

Card-stock.....heck why not.......if you get a shot of your completed or in process upper belly with

the fuselage slots and the the stock you use for hinges....

I have to start scribing into the belly of the BUFF......cut those upper doors out, I'm thinking to cut straight in from the ground-plane axis, hop I don't run into the Belly bay walls, it will be only a few thou tolerance...

Thanks Russ, great work man.

is that a standard chromate green, or did you mix that?

Yeah, I was going to ask but you started that already, the little bay in front of the front wheel bays, did they put ordnance in there, or use it to drop Jane Fonda onto a power plant in Hanoi?Devil

Thanks,

I hear you Ken:

I would like to give the local guys the business for sure.....but asking me to look up the part number?

I looked it up, I Part # $65US...lol....

-Dom

I am totally in full support of the locally owned business.  I just recently moved my prescriptions from a national chain to a new locally owned pharmacy for that very reason!

Ken

I'll call tomorrow, maybe someone will have the sense to sell me something. Otherwise, I'm back to Ebay.

Dom

Hi Dom,

I totally mis-read your earlier post!  Yeah, with service like that, why bother with them.  They have to earn your business.  If they expect you to go the extra mile to give them business, forget it!  Sorry about that, I re-read your post and now I understand what you are saying.

Ken

Yeah Ken:

I was a bit put off. I know they have some great stuff, and I haven't been to any of them for about 6 months, but I never get a break from them, and i have to drive to them during their business hours.

I am happy to do that, but every time i go into one of those places, i am just a stranger, all over again.

You know, I have never walked into a hobby shop and left without spending money......but they take me for granted, no one ever bothers to help me. So, if it is self-serve world, I can get the same level of respect online......have PayPal Will Travel........

My pleasure, Dom.

No, you won't find those reinforcements in the kit. I added them using 0.015 in styrene.  They are made up of three sections: the first section starts at the vertical panel line just before the end of the wing root (see picture of model) and goes straight back along the horizontal panel line until just behind the rear wheel wells. There, it overlaps the next section with a tapered end (I sanded down the end of the second section slightly to prevent the tapered end sticking up too much).

The second section angles slightly up and extends to the vertical panel line just past the chaff slots and before the 47-section hatch (hard to see in the pictures). At that point, there is another slight up-angle for the third section. The third section extends along the horizontal panel line to just before the vertical line that runs down to the radio antenna on the belly - about half way between that panel line and the one before it.

Below are some pictures of the strips on the model.

That chromate green is actually Krylon Fusion spray paint I bought at Ace Hardware - It's called "Ivy Leaf". The color turned out to be just about perfect.

Great idea about dropping Jane Fonda. Too bad they didn't do that!  Actually, that's a radome that covers the bombing radar. Below is the only picture I've been able to find with that radome removed.
