Hi Everyone,

I just got home from the IPMS meeting.  I have such a great time.  Everyone enjoyed the 8mm film I brought.  Don agreed that it was a RF-101C in the film that the pilot was flying.  Don James flew an F-84E and an F-84G in the Korean War and later flew the U-2 and the SR-71.  Tonight he told the story about how he had to fly the F-84 instead of the F-86.

When he arrived in Korea, the Wing Commander assembled everyone (pilots) and asked the question "who in this room is checked out on the F-84?".  Don said everyone kept their hand down.  Everyone wanted to fly the F-86 and not the F-84!  Then the Wing Commander said "Okay, I know some of you are checked out on the F-84, so you might as well raise your hand now, or I am simply going to check everyone's record to find out.".  Don said that was when he and several other pilots finally raised their hands.  "Okay, you guys are flying the F-84."  And that was that.

Don flew the "Hoosier Hotshot".  There is a set of decals made for his plane, an F-84E.  That is going to be my next build when I get done with the F-4E I am building now.

Don then told us of another story about one particular Mig that would always attack the F-84 when they were making their bombing run.  That was when they were the most vulnerable.  What the Mig would do was wait up high and get behind the F-84 as it started it's run and attack.  Then it would do a loop to get behind the next F-84 that was making it's bomb run on the same target.  Don said this Mig never shot down any of the F-84s, but this same pilot pulled the same maneuver every time.

I never get tired of listening to his stories!

Yeh, I have been wanting to join, but I can't quite get the Wife unit to approve the $25 expenditure.  They have a chapter right in Toledo.

Damn Ken. Where do i order some of those ejection handles?

Thank you for the compliment Mikey!  Embarrassed

I am excited, tonight is our local IPMS chapter meeting!  I wish that the glue would be dry enough for me to take the seats with me to "Show-And-Tell", but they will have to wait until next month.  I will be taking some of my Dad's 8mm film of the acrobatic daredevil stunts by someone in what I believe was an RF-101C.  Don who is an old USAF pilot will be able to tell me.  Talk to you all when I get back!

They have chapters spread all over the World.  It is a great way to meet with fellow modelers and discuss anything and everything about modeling.  There is probably one close to where you live.

Ken

If you go to the website and select "Chapter & RC Directory" on the left side, it will take you to a USA map.  Click on your state and it will bring up a list of chapters, where and when they meet, and the local president.  If you click on the president, it will bring up your email messenging program with their email address already loaded so that you can contact them.  You can attend the meetings without becoming a member just to check it out.  If you decide you like it, then you can join.  The price isn't bad, I think it is only $25 per year, and you get a quarterly magazine with it.

Well, the ejection seat handles are glued on.  When they are dry tomorrow, I will take a picture and post it.  That means that the cockpit is done!!!!  Toast        That means it is finally time to break out the actual kit!

Ken

Nice work, Ken! Congratulations, they really look good!  Toast

Russ

Thanks Russ!  It feels good to finally get that part done.  It is such a detailed area.  Now I can get moving on the rest of the kit.

Gamera

Russ: The turret looks great, super job there.

Mike: The Buggati is one nice looking plane. Are you going to start on her anytime soon? I'd like to see how she comes together.

Ken: Looks like you got your problems with the escape handles cleared up. Much better looking than the ones I've painted.

And good find there Mike on the five guys at ground zero video clip. I keep thinking about 'The Beast of Yucca Flats' (IMHO one of the five worst movies ever made) where giant Swedish wrestler Tor Johnson after being exposed to an atomic test turns into an indestructible murdering monster!

Thank you Cliff for the compliment.

Hi Everyone,

I got the other ejection seat handle done!  Here is a picture of it:

I think it turned out better than the last one, which just proves practice makes perfect.  But I am done practicing!  Big Smile  Now the next step is figuring out how to attach them to the hoods!  I think I will try glueing a "L" tab to each one and use the shelf to glue to the underside of the hoods.  I will look at it a little closer and see if that will work.

Yeh.  I miss him.  He always had great advice and info and he liked to help people.  I'm just glad we got the  "too sick oh" to him in time for him to enjoy it for a while.

But isn't that just another example of how Berny was?  He was always quick to help out a fellow modeler.  If he had something sitting in his stash that could benefit someone else, he never hesitated to offer it up.  He was a great guy!

The craft could take off and land and while doing so, it was very hard to notice any pitch. I think the designers wanted all the wheels to pretty much hit or take off at the same time. I swear i saw a film of early take-offs, and it appears as if it is rising then the nose tilts down as it goes up.....

Again, I think i heard it said that the wing tips could cut an up-down arc of about 27', and the flexibility of those wings was designed on purpose. I have no idea how they did it.

Guys, here's an FSX video that shows the wing flex pretty well. Of course, a bomber never landed with a full load of bombs so that's a little fakey. On the other hand, I have seen bombers come back with hung bombs and seen them drop off on touchdown and go bouncing and cartwheeling behind the bomber. Scarey sight.

Russ

Cool video Russ.  Wow, that had to be a scary sight to see, bombs cartwheeling down the runway behind the aircraft!  I would hate to be the one who had to pick that mess up!

Hows this for irony. 9 years ago Berny gave away some 1:48 Genie missiles to a guy whos account has been removed from the site.

Was his account removed because he did something wrong?

Hey Everybody,

I did some bending on one of the ejection seat handles today.  Here is how it turned out:

I think it turned out better than the last go around.  I will work on the other one tomorrow.  It takes a lot of patience to get it into shape and I have to take a break in between.

Ken

Outstanding, Ken. That looks great! If you were anything like me, you were completely rigid, sweat trickling down your forehead, fingers shaking as you... wait a minute...that's me making a sandwich...

Good job, bud Big Smile

You crack me up Russ!  Big Smile  Thank you for the compliments!  It took a lot of intense twisting and turning with the tweezers under a lighted magnifying glass!
