Those are probably wing walk and anti glare areas. Looking at pics of VA-46 from that cruise it looks like the nose anti glare should be dark gull gray, not black. I can't find any cleart shots of the wings to show if any were there but the photo below from a different time period shows no wing walks.

The nose profile of the kit itself is an A-4E. It has been the same since Monogram first released this kit back in the day. It has to be replaced to make an A-4C (along with the intakes). Now the markings are an intersting point. Some A-4E Skyhawks in VA-46 did indeed have the national insignia on the nose like A-4Cs did, as this photo shows.

while some apparently had the standard A-4E star location on the rear fuselage...

The nose and marking look like a C, and another very confusing thing is it shows now black areas on the wings or nose like other skyhawks?

That top pic looks to be from that time and place based on the paint scheme...

It always struck me as kind of a bizarre subject too....

On another front, I am still trying to find references for the camo on the H-21C.

Certainly they were that way in 1963, at least some of the ones in the 93rd in Vietnam.

Note: these pictures are not from that time and place. Best I can come up with.

What do you mena make it look like a C? The Monogram kit is an E, and that squadron was equipped with Es for the markings provided at that time period. The intakes and nose are the primary visual physical differences between a C and an E.

The monogram A-4 with McCains markings says its an E model, but I keep finding things on it that make it look much much more like a C. Anyone know for sure?

The Monogram A-7 kit should be an "A", not and "E". It has the twin 20mm cannon and not the single 20mm Vulcan gun

Professordeath, I know what you mean by Jet Fever.  I never had an interest in jets, (I fly them for petes' sake) until my son started the Monogram A-7.  I thought to myself that hey that looks pretty cool.  So I started reading and that led to collecting and now I have 3 F-8's and one A-7 and an A-4 too.

Tcepilot, Hasegawa makes an A-7E/D that would work for this.  It's better than the HB version as it has some shape issues at the intake.  The Monogram kit ain't bad either.  It's also an E.  If you want an A or B, HB is it and intake be dammed.

tcepilot

so basicly do a few coats of white?

Yes, several light thin coats with plenty of drying time in between will give you better results.

a lot seem to have trouble with yellow and white. both gloss in these colors cause a headache also. i use to have a problem spraying white and yellow and the best thing to do is build it up in layers. light missed coats. i only airbrush tamiya and model master whites.

again slowly build it up. you'll get even results while doing this.

Oh.... Prof...excuse me...my bad english is the cause of  misunderstanding.........Be patient!!To scribe right line I use Dymo adesive tape like a guide,or the Verlinden template .....the difficul is when the surface isn't plane or if the line to scribe is curve. After repass the line with the scriber a light sanded to clean the excess of plastic and at the end a light brushstroke on the scribed line with Tamiya Green cap Glue or better with metiletilchetone (called also weld ...or some similar...)Ciao Enrico.

On monday I'll post my scribing tools!!

Hey Mike, a good trick for white that I learned from an airline guy at a LHS many years back- do a misty coat or two of Flat White as a primer first, to give the top coat something to bite into,  then apply a top coat of your preferred Satin, Semi Gloss, or Gloss White.

I know what you mean about white. I’m painting the gear area of my A- 1D Skyraider for this GB and  it’s either too much or too little; drives me crazy! Fortunately, I don’t build many models with white in them; probably for that very reason.

professordeath

Making good progress there, pilot. Gawd!! Do I hate having to spray white...or any primary color for that matter. I don't know why they are so difficult to thin to my liking. Either too runny of clog the brush!

As for badge: I'd love to use one but I don't feel I've earned it. I don't even own a kit that would qualify as of yet. Plus, maybe we could get some other badge choices made up. Maybe an AF F4, 105, B-52, Huey!!

That reminds me...I have fond memories from my stepdad about Puff the Magic Dragon...does anyone make a decent kit of one?

Hi Prof.......this kit is in my stash about 18 years.....all is changed:girlfriends,home,dog.....so I've decided to accept the challenge of an another italian modeller who's rescribing a monogram f-8 crusader......This is the story........For the scriber I've only used a set of iron needle mounted on a pin vise and a ton of dymo labelling tape and also the super useful Verlinden etched template ....and some ciano to correct mistakes....here others pic....and link.....
