That looks good Greg and if you hadn't said anything nobody would have noticed.

"Where I'm At" or "I Made a Boo-Boo".

Short version is I haven't been thinking straight for a week or so, laid on the flat clear way too thick and ended up with a milky white appearance. Think I'll go back to MM acrylic flat clear for this purpose (except when looking for a very washed-out appearance). This was Vallejo flat varnish, which I already knew had a tendency to do this when laid down too thickly.

Wanted to explain this now so when it's done nobody wonders what's up with that!

I'm not concerned about this as I've been looking at this as a learning build all along anyway.

Little snippet to share: I didn't inspect closely enough before dull coat, and found out too late there were a whole bunch of fuzzies in the wheel wells left over from the wet tissue. The flat coat adhered them, of course. To my delight, a light brushing of thinner compatible with the flat coat made them disappear.

JOE RIX

And the hits just keep on coming!!! I was rolling back the putty mask so I could line up the camo pattern for further masking only to discover that the Duck Egg Green (RLM 84)  that I had just sprayed on did not match the previous paint. The same paint from the same jar! What the ..Bang HeadCryingAngryBang HeadSuper Angry!!!!!!!! I am simply beside myself. Un..friggin'..believable! I need a four letter word here that is unoffensive yet expresses incredible amounts of frustration..oh yeah..AHH GOLF!! I am at a loss as to what caused the  difference in color. So much for the ranting. Now for a solution. I have another jar of the same paint that I will try to see if it matches the original. I knew it was going to well. But, I am undaunted in pulling this off (for the moment).

Jesus wept! I'm sorry Joe! Hang in there lil buddy! Youre gonna get through this thing one way or the other man.

PJ, thanks for showing how you used stretched sprue a few pages back to fill that gap. Very informative, looks great.

Joe and John, I am in good hands here indeed! Enjoyed the funny comments. :)

Chandler, that is coming along very nicely! Welcome  back!

Joe Rix, you have the luck of Reilly. And patience of a saint.  I know you'll get it all squared away.

She's looking great, Allen!

That color mix looks almost exactly like Gunze's Olive Drab... Wink

The yellow looks really nice!

Very nice work so far Chanter. Gad to see you back here with us. I will not claim to be any kind of authority on RLM colors but your yellow looks good to me. As far as the RLM 71 goes it does appear to be a shade of brown rather than dark green it should be. But, hey it's all about the excellent effort your making. Anyway, your white wash fixes that problem. That aside, i would rather focus on the very clean and sharp modeling you have done. Your seams are nicely done as well as your masking. What also caught my eye was that rather ingenious jig you built for supporting your model. Very cool. Looking forward to more progress from you as well as many, many pics. Kudos to your work.

Hi everyone,

It's been 50 or so pages since I last put any work up(!!) but now that baseball season is over, golf season is winding down (boo hoo) and my Mother in Law has gone back home, I've had a chance to carry on a bit. Before I bombard you with pics, I wanted to compliment everyone on the fantastic work.  It's a real motivator to see what you guys churn out, and inspires me to try and improve with each build.

On with the show.

I left off just after gluing the wings to the fuselage and thanks to an excellent tip from Clemens, I was able to fill the seam at the wing root and remove the excess with a simple swipe of a Q-Tip and thinner. Yes

I primed everything with Model Masters grey primer and then sprayed the various parts yellow.  I used XF-3 and added a bit of XF-7 flat red until I thought it looked similar to other examples I've seen.  I really really really wish I'd written down the mixture, as I have a small spot that will require a touch up.  Another rookie mistake to learn from.  Does anyone have any comments on the colour as far as too yellow etc?

Fuselage Band

I am doing a JG51 winter camouflage scheme for a couple of reasons: (1) I love the look, and (2) I don't have to worry about mottling for now.  I'm having enough adventure as it is. Smile

I originally wanted to shoot a real quick splinter job, with the intention of trying to whitewash over hairspray.  That led me to the great RLM-71 hunt because I had no XF-13 JA Green (which is apparently what that equates to).  I found a chart that said to mix equal parts XF62 OD with XF49 Khaki.  Done and Done!  Mixed, sprayed and wound up with what looks to be more like XF-vomit mixed with XF-earwax.

pre colour

Ok....it will work out once I do the RLM-70, right?

pre white wash

Ok, so maybe not.  Forget the hairspray, we can't have any of these colours showing through!  On to the white.  I originally started with XF-2 mixed with a couple of drops of light grey to soften it up a bit.  I thinned with Tamiya thinner at about 2:1 paint and put down thin coats at around 20 psi with my needle closed off a bit.  White is a proper pain!  It was drying quickly and almost pebbling.  I dumped the paint out of my cup and re-mixed, this time at about 50/50 paint / thinner. Upped my pressure to 30 psi, opened the needle a bit more and I think I had better luck the next time around.

white wash

Finally after letting it sit for a day, I could resist no more, and started peeling tape.  (It was like Christmas)

white wash tape removed

I picked out all of the silly putty and here's where it sits at the moment.  As I mentioned earlier, I have one tiny little mark on the starboard side on the fuselage band where the paint lifted.  I'll have to touch that up.  As well, I had a bit of white bleed under to the yellow underside at the nose.  Is there a simple technique I can use to take only the white away from the yellow paint?

underside

As always, I look forward to any comments / critiques or pointers, and I promise to be more active around here, now that I'm getting some "me" time back.  Big Smile

Thanks for looking!

Allen

I much appreciate the encouraging words gentlemen. Thank You.

PJunkie - Your gun covers look excellent. Appears your method paid nice dividends. No doubt that liquid cement is a godsend to plastic modeling. I use Tamiya Liquid Cement that works quite nicely. And the Touch-n-Flow is simply a necessity.

Managed to get a decent pic for you all of where i'm currently at with the recovery effort. That's the easy part. Now it's on to the intricate masking to if I can get everything lined up with the existing camo.

looks like I mussed a few pages. but im back.

Nathan.  as for the hobby boss fitting together  it has the largest pins and location marks I have ever seen when you put in the engine and cockpit there there rock solid and in place. then when I put the 2 halves together no sanding or gaps. that's as far as I have got I will throw some pics up.

schattan  thanks for all that bombtorpedo info most interesting but still strang looking.  :)

PJunkie & Nathan - Although you guys are faced with some poor engineering you've both shown some remarkable skill in overcoming them in different ways. Well done.

Lest any of you have forgotten, I am indeed still working on my 1/72 190 and the botched paint job. I've made a bit of progress in that I've got the primer on (Mr. Surfacer 1200) and have subsequently applied the RLM 84. For those of you who are relatively new to the GB I am using Gunze-Sangyo Blue-Green for my RLM 84. It is a nearly dead on match to the paint chip in Ken Merrick's book "Luftwaffe Colors and Camouflage, 1933-1945, Vol. 2". Also been painting and weathering the landing gear and doors. I was going to post some pics last night but the photos simply turned out to bright. I will get some up here right directly. All in all, so far so good.

Nathan: I tried glueing the gun covers (well, only one, because the other one is opened up) to the wings before joining them with the fuselage. It worked for me...

Greg: I sent you a PM regarding the Eduard kits...

I can't decide if you guys are scaring me away from Eduard or enticing me towards the challenge.

In either case, it is quite informative to see how you are dealing with the challenges, so thanks!
