Hey Bish. I was thinking of trying to spread my self a bit and maybe get into another GB. Unfortunately, my Stuka is pretty far in and is actually almost to paint stage. Might be a little too built for an addition? I thought maybe this might motivate me to work on it.

Gary, I have found that pics of the G's tend to be from the front and getting codes is tricky. I do need to get that Luftwaffe markings book, its been on my Amazon favourites for a while.

What Erich say's is pretty spot on from my understanding as well. From what I have read, Panzerjagdkommando Weiss, was split between StG 1 and 2 with a Staffel going to each. The G-1 was extremely limited in production, basically as just a test bed. It entered service at about the same time as the D-5, but I guess it makes sense to test the idea on the slightly older airframe rather than the new one. So G-1 production was rather limited to those in the test and evaluation unit and a limited conversion afterwards until G-2 production could get into full swing.

And he is 100% right about the T-34 badge. You see it everywhere, but its use was rather limited.

Bob, no worries, I have a couple of builds to do before I start mine.

Thanks, guys!  I'll try to do something with it...  maybe.  I have an idea about snow... lots of snow...

Gary, no laughing here, even bad kits need loving. Those Hobby Boss decals are for Rudel's Ju 87G-2 in late 1944, not sure what those letters, the B and U are for though.

The Monograme decals appear much earlier in the war. I don't know when Rudel first got a G-2, but I have never seen one with those codes. He did have a D-5 with them, but the T6 was much smaller. Those look like the 41/42 codes from when they were still using the B and R.

Apparently the "BU" is another Stuka G1, as reported by Sabre F-86 on LSP:

I just spent an hour going thru Luftwaffe markings, code, and units. I found only 5 tank busters in there with known markings;

St.G 2 T6+BB was a G-1
St.G 1 A5+BU was a G-1
St.G 77 S2+IX was a G-2
St.G 3 S7+BU was a G-1
St.G 3 S7+EN was a G-2.

There are not a lot of known cannonvogel identified, but the BU code is actually S7+BU.  The S7 is on the decal sheet, but is in much smaller letters.  Not sure what the reason was for that.

If you're not doing Rudel's bird, you're kinda out of luck about markings!  I'm going to do something with the S7+EN (although I wonder if that is not a misreading).  Need pictures!

Mustang1989>  Good kit to start him out on.  I remember building the Monogram version way back when I was about 12 or 13.  I painted it gloss black with bright blue undersides.  My idea of what a Stuka should look like!  LOL!

Gary

PS> And just for discussion, Erich (Moderator over on WW2Aircraft.net) has this to say about the famous tank emblem on the Stuka:

ok let me try to explain this about the white T-34 motiff. a special Panzerstaffel of G-1's with the 3.7cm was established to counter the Soviet armor as a threat. It was experimental from the point to see just what type of attrition could be had along with testing the 3.7 ammo on armor.
Obviously it was a success and G-1's were given to much of the StG's as the 10th staffel or 10th Panzerstaffel if you will.......... the white T-34 was not painted on these 10th staffel machines only on the units in Panzerstaffel Weiss.

the original Panzerstaffel when built up went to StG 2 and Rudels unit. the White T-34 stayed on for a short term but was nothing special, because of the Wochenschau footage portrayed and easily available for the last dozezn years everyone seems to take as fact that ALL Kanonvögels had the white emblem .......... nope !

The G-1 was in all the Panzerstaffeln in 1, 2, 3, SG 9, 77. When during such heavy attrition times the G-2 was introduced and replaced destroyed a/c. Also during several weeks-to month Fw 190F's and G's with Panzerblitz were also added to the line up, but again for a very short period(s) to the 10.(Pz.)StG's. Unless we have positive proff from celar photographic records I am in doubt during very late 44 through wars end.
Here is an interesting side note the G-2 came into StG 77 by April of 44 the G-1 had been phased out

Looks like a few of us are off to a great start.  I'm really looking forward to getting started on mine as soon as I finish my LCVP for the 1944 and Longest Day GBs, and I'm still waiting on my PE set to arrive that I ordered almost a month and half ago.

Nice stuff going on here. A definite buzz.

Mustang. Looking really good! I like the color and weathering.

Nathan. That stinks about the flash, but hopefully the better detail will make dealing with that worth it.

Raven, just has a quick search. There is a pic of a B of that unit based in Belgium in jan 1941. This makes sense. The Stuka's were with drawn from the BoB after their heavy losses, I think this was at the end of August. they did attack some shipping in Nov and started small scale night attacks against SE England at night in Jan 41. I hadn't realised this until now.

So the only real error is in the instructions, instead of France Summer 1940 it should say Belgium Jan 1941.

Mustang, thats looking really nice. Love the detail in there and some nice weathering.

Bish, here's a photo of the box art, decals and painting guide. It's cut off in the photo, but the instructions do seem to be calling for flat black for the underside, so I guess this is supposed to be a BoB nightfighter? I have a feeling I'll know a lot more about Stukas by the time this build is over. Wink

Gary:Thats friggin cool! I've got the same kit in the stash and my 9 year old son and I are building it as well. His is going to be a hekuva lot more basic than the rest of the builds here but he's looking forward to building with the guys in here. Another week or so and I'll see if he's serious enough to enter it in the GB here.

John:Whoa ho! ho! Look at him bust out with the Fujimi G1 kit with all the goodies! Gotta let the big dog eat!! I'll be watchin' this!

Nathan T:Man you're right on the better cockpit detail than the Hasegawa kit. This is why I have the Aires set!  lol

Everybody:Got the detail from the Aires floor transferred to the Hasegawa floor and started on the cockpiit side walls. Definitely a whole buttload of detail to follow here!

Just started picking out some of the details with some flat black with a little white mixed in. Will weather it shortly

Ok here we are with all the basic stuff transferred over to the Hasegawa floor. I'm not too awful worried about the little blotch there at the front L/H corner of the cockpit floor. There's a lever to install there. Still learning my way around this cockpit to properly identify what it is. I'll figure it out eventually through this build. Anyways I started the painting process by applying some rattle can silver then allowed that to dry overnight. Next came a coat of acrylic RLM 02 followed by some light, and I mean light scraping of the raised areas, particularly in the flooring to reveal some of the bare aluminum to show through the paint. Next came a Mig Productions wash thinned down just a little bit as to not overdo it. And then finally I used a silver lead pencil to bring out some ot the worn highlights like the spare ammo drums on the R/H wall. Still more detail to come..............................ALOT MORE.

Nice to have plenty of choice. And thanks, there's no rush as I won't be doing my Rudel project for some time, when ever you have the chance, that would be really handy to have.

I can do that for you Bish. I haven't decided on markings yet. The kit decals are Cartograph and are very tempting, and I also have an Aeromaster sheet of foreign Stukas too.

Nice pics Nathan, is the flash really that bad.

But I spotted something. The kit comes with the markings for Rudel's D-5 T6+AD. I plan on doing that aircraft at some point putting together my own markings, and I only really have a couple of pics of it. Could I ask a favour, could you take a pic or scan that section of the marking instruction, that would be really handy.

Which marking option are you doing.

Pic time.

Box and sprues:

a nice pe fret:

Here I removed all the flash from the wings, and I also had to cut off the flaps and ailerons, as the fit at the trailing edge of the two wing haves is horrible. So I need room to puttySad. I'll glue them back on before paint time:

Here's the pit:

All these parts needed flash removal! Very tedious:

Raven, in regards to the partly covered cross, that looks like it is from a night scheme where the underside was painted black. But I have never seen that on a B before. The Stuka wasn't forced into the dark until very late in the war, when they fitted the flame dampeners. That aircraft belongs to StG 1 and carries the J9 code and winged helmet originally used by Tr.G 186, the aircraft unit for the Graf Zepplin carrier. The Stuka element of 189 became 7 Staffel of StG 1 in July 1940.

All those Fujimi kits have similar box arts which I really like, and they are pretty nice kits as well, if you can get hold of them.

John, nice to see it started, and looking forward to those cannon being put to good use.

Gary, no laughing here, even bad kits need loving. Those Hobby Boss decals are for Rudel's Ju 87G-2 in late 1944, not sure what those letters, the B and U are for though.

Gary good luck on that build. Just give it a stellar paint job and it won't matter how fancy the kit is.

Commander John- I'm interested to see how that Fujimi kit builds up. Looks like Bish sent you some sweet goodies.

I started a bit on my D-5. I gotta say that this new Italeri kit has a crap ton of flash, all around it on every part, large or small. Lots of micro flash too. If you don't pay attention, you might not notice and it could cause a poor seam fit. I spent all last evening cleaning up the parts. I do like the detail though. A bit more detailed than the Hasegawa kit. They even hollowed out some scoops and intakes on the cowling. I did start to glue the multi-piece cowling together, and it fit real nice. I'll have pics posted up later today. I'm off to decide on a pe set for it.

Bish: it does, but I'm at work so I'll have to post it later tonight. I know it's one of the two 'France, 1940' schemes. To me it looks like there's camouflage paint on the belly that extends up and partly over the insignia, but it's hard to tell.

Tempest, I love the box art on that Fujimi kit.

I have a feeling we're going to seeing a lot of cockpit photos soon... Wink

Okay, time to get cracking!  This model is not going to build itself!  Almost...

Yes, this is the model I'm building.  The "Hobby Craft JU-87 G1".  A kit so bad one modeler reported he threw it in the trash...

Yeah, I know.  An Eduard or Hasegawa kit has over two hundred parts.  This one has roughly... 40-ish.

Hey!  Stop laughing out there!  Let me tell you how it compares to the venerable Monogram JU-87 G1 of classic fame.  Well... They're the same kit.  I didn't believe it, but the parts are virtually identical.  Somehow and somewhere Hobby Craft apparently snuck in and used Monograms old molds or they acquired them somehow.  Go figure.

The only differences are the Monogram kit contains two crew figures and the decals.

I'm not sure but I think the Monogram decals (the lower ones in the picture) were different in earlier boxings.  There may have been a change along the line.

And now what about size?  Is the Hobby Craft Stuka actually 1:48 scale?  Well... not exactly...

It seems a little short, if my printing is anyway accurate.  This means that the Monogram kit is not exactly to scale either, so it's not that important.

Still, I intend to build this kit... without all the fancy AM stuff you guys are using on those big expensive kits (and that stuff probably wouldn't fit anyway).  We'll see how it goes.  Sad

And STOP LAUGHING!

Raven, interesting note on the Balkankreuz. Do the instructions indicate the Geschwader or unit it represented? If so, I'm sure someone here (maybe even me) can figure it out. Like many here, I have quite a few books on Ju-87's so certainly we could figure it out.

Steve, thats a nice looking kit there, even comes with a full engine. Does the PE set come with it. Interesting collection of ordnance as well.

Yep, PE included. Just have to pick up some hakenkreuz decals, but plenty of time for that. On the subject of decals, what's the story behind the one where the balkenkreuz is partly covered?

Tom68, welcome aboard! I'm also getting back into the hobby after a long time away, and just started with group builds fairly recently as well, so you're not alone. Be warned: GBs can be very addictive. Ask me how I know. Wink

Funny, just yesterday I was drooling over examining the back of my kit box and noticed the stubs on the spats in one of the four Stuka images; couldn't figure out what they were but now I realize they're the trumpet stems. Odd thing is, they're visible on the 'Bulgaria, April 1941' version, but not the others, including the two from 1940. Hmm

Its ok, your among friends, you can admit to drooling.

The sirens were not fitted until the later B-1's, I think after the Polish campaign. So its not uncommon to see pics of B's without them. And the siren mounts were fitted at the factory, but the sirens were fitted by the ground crew. There are a number of pics of Stuka's with the mounts simply faired over. I guess it could be upto the pilot of unit commander as to if they were fitted.

Nathan T

Mustang- 4am? Hope you have the coffee pot programmed.

Dude, the coffee pot is always set for 3:45 am. Now, how much modeling gets done between that time and the time that I have to go to work are two different things. My jeriatric doggies sometimes do not allow for a whole lot because those guys are a friggin' hand full. But the coffee pot is ALWAYS set!

As far as the Italeri kit Raven, that thing looks like its going to be a cool build. Lots of parts I see!!

As far as progress this morning,I started removing the detail from the Aires flooring as promised:

and here is the "part" I was after:

and I removed all the pilots flooring detail from the Hasegawa flooring to accomodate that of the Aires variety.................

Ok fellas. I'll be editing this post later to show the kit flooring and the Aires flooring from the update kit that I am using. I am glad I test fitted the flooring in the fuselage first thing because it only touches one side of the fuselage and not the other. What tha hek???? For what I paid for this update kit one would think that it would fit better than that. Oh well that being said and my rant over, it's time to get to work!! I'm going to strip the kit flooring of detail at the pilots floor area and sand the floor from beneath the detail and seat mounting on the Aires floor and transfer the detail and seat mounting apparatus over to the kit floor along with that nifty foot pedal just aft of the gunners seat area. Will edit and show pics later when I get my computer back from my wife who is using it to take a medical exam for work right now.

The Aires part is on the left and the box part is on the right:

The transformation begins tomorrow at 4 am!!!Wink
