Dre

That's a mighty fine bit of work, Panzerjager.    That should look awesome once painted and weathered.

Thanks Dre!

Got the bulk of the paint applied and then sealed with model master metalizer sealer. The metallic paint is a paint called Spaz Stix chrome that is used in the RC world. I have a ton of this stuff so it helps me save on the alclad. I used the sealer to dull it down.

I used the kit revelltastic decals, needless to say every decal softener I have (Sol, solvaset, marksetter) had no effect. Since I build in 48 scale I have no spares for this kit, So I will have to make my own decals.

There are no tow hooks of main tow cables in the kit.

There are however small towing cables included for when the external tracks are being towed like a trailer.

This being said, there is no provision "in the kit" for stowing them on the hull.

I also decided to replace the kit tools with some of my copies of the Formations Models set.

time to rest till tomorrow.

hope I can get this monster into primer soon!

Quite nice projects going there guys!

Sorry for the silence for the last couple of days.

But progress has been made!

I had to carve from scratch one of the 4 tow hooks needed for this project.

then I had to make a mold and cast the rest of them:

Wayne,

Epicly Excellent!

Well, I'm moving very slow here. We are getting the house ready to put on the market, so I'm doing more work on the house than the build.
I received everything except the decals "Moonbeam McSwine" with the 352nd Fighter Group, 487th Fighter Squadron. One of the "Blue Nosed Bastards of Bodney"
I started with cutting the flaps out to show them extended. There are some modifications needed here. The 51's flaps tucked under the wing fillet when retracted so I will have to scratch that little piece to fill where I cut it out. Also I needed to at the leading edge of the flap which shows while in the extended position. I need to thin the plastic some to simulate the wing skin and a few more items need to be done. Most of the major stuff has been completed and the rest can be done after the wings are attached.
The flap is obviously taped on to simulate were it will sit.
This my first real attempt at scratch building.

I will also be scratching some detail for the Packard Merlin. Although there are thousands of pictures of the engine, 99% are of no help. What I really need is a good picture of the rear of the engine including the firewall tank, (oil?) and the plumbing and linkages. Hard to find a good, clear detailed picture under the bonnet, of a non-racing pony.

K-5 suspension. first pic is the bottom of the two 6 axle trucks, second is a pile of wheels and axles, third is a bunch of suspension assemblies.  by using my sprue nippers and cutting really close and understanding what won't be seen so little sanding necessary.

It's so sad when a good kit has to die. :'( But thank God for good kits that want to help after their gone by making sure their donor card is up to date.

It wasn't in a cooler filled with ice... but the new windscreen arrived yesterday. As soon as I put the finishing touches on the winter 109 I'm gettin' back at this one.

And a BIG WELL DOME to Tamiya.  2 weeks to the day for the new part.

I had some catching up to do but I really like what I see going on in here.

Yeah stik, I'm still 'in' and with cutbacks being so severe, tons of stuff we took for granted is now gone. They buy lots of stuff 'off the shelf' now so the cool pure army stuff seems to be slipping away in favour of what's readily available at Home Depot...

Wow, 550 cord...haven't heard that in a long time. We totally can't get 550 anymore, just cheaper OD cord. I miss having rolls of that stuff!!

I miss being in and not being able to get oodles of that stuff for free... it's good to be friends with the supply folks...

Thakns Panzer! I have plenty of 550 cord guts (braided nylon line) that I use for tow cables, but I have been wondering how to do the US style eye portions of the cable. You just gave me a good idea here. many thanks.

ok, so that's single strand wire for the eye bent to shape, super glued to styrene tube collar, and then braided wire for the cable itself?

yup, and the braided wire is picture hanging wire from the hardware store, it's perfect, and soft enough to be cut with diagonal cutters.

hope this helps.

Yes

Thanks Rob,

Now I need to build the tow cables that also didn't come in the kit...

solid core wire and evergreen tube and patience.

How did you do the "eye" portion of the tow cable? Is that a slice of tube bent into an oblong shape? And then glued to the collar/sleeve portion?

20 AWG solid core wire used for the bent eye parts super glued to the styrene tube,
