Hey all,

Sorry that I have not been on lately as I have been real sick for the last two weeks. I have been to the ER with very high blood sugar levels and trying to fight my CIDP with a med that raises the sugar levels.

The Doctor has taken me off of that but now I am faced with trying to get the IVIG done now and that is very costly on my co-pay. The IVIG is about $350,000 to have done. It is a 5 day treatment that takes 5 hours a day to do. Then it may be a every month deal of one to two days.My work bench looks like a tornado hit it and I have not been able to clean it up and get everything back in order.

I have worked on the plane a bit but mostly the armament for it. As soon as I can get my bench cleaned up I will post pics of the progress.

Thanks all,

Doug

Here are some update photos of the armament for the F-4g. I still need to do some touch-ups but they are basically done.

Thanks Rob and Theuns.

I am having to wait to get a new set of instructions on this kit. I pulled a bone headed deal and poured out my Tamiya cement on them and ruined the pages. I can't read them at all. Between myself and my two year old grand-daughter must might lose or tear up this build. I lost a very small piece that goes on top of the plane and my wife found it and I turned right around and lost it a gain. This time I can't find it. It will turn up after everything is done and say haha. Just my luck.  LOL!

No, it's been a fun build and I have got the plane primed and sanded more now just looking for places that need more work on them. I found a gap on one of the wing tips and am thinking about using stretched spure to fill it. might be easier to sand and a lot neater than putty at this point.

Theuns, Great job on the decals. The Mig looks outstanding. Great job on the painting and clear coat.

I will have some update photos soon.

Thanks all,

Doug

I think I will be adding my 1/32 l-18c buitl from revell kit.

I will model it after this one I built and fly - www.jlpc.co.za/.../Piper_Cub_Day-2_Skywood_SW-18_replica_Piper_L18C_ZU-EMX_Omer_Mees-03.jpg

Just a quick critique on the missiles for you Nomad before you add them to the model. The Sidewinders should definitely have a Light Ghost Gray body, unless you plan on building the Weasel in on of the late 70's/early 80's SEA color schemes. The Sparrows too. By the time that the Weasels went to the Gray Hill II scheme in the late 80s that the kit comes in, the US had changed air to air missile bodies to Light Ghost Gray.

Thanks for catching that Stickpusher. I was going by the instructions and what photos I have looked at on the internet. Not that big of a change. I will get that fixed.

Does anyone know what the mixing percentages are for Light Ghost Gray? I am going to have to mix my own.

Thanks,

Doug

Most paint lines (except Tamiya) have Light Ghost Gray in their line ups. The kit instructions also have an error in the aircraft camouflage scheme if you are using the kit decals. The lower surfaces should mirror the upper surfaces with the Gunship Gray on the wings, and then a "false canopy" projecting forward along the lower fuselage center.

You kinda lost me there Stick. The photo on the back of the instructions shows Gunship Gray on some of the upper surfaces and Neutral Gray on the lower surfaces as well as some of the upper. As far as the  "false canopy"  I am not sure what you are talking about.

Run an image search for Hill II or Hill 2 scheme. The instructions show a paint schem similar to Hill I, which the F-4G never wore. Hill I was like the scheme worn by F-16s and adopted for Phantoms in the air defense roll in place of the Europe I wraparound scheme. Hill II rectified some shortcomings for that scheme, mostly by painting the upper and lower wings in gunship gray so an opposing pilot could not tell by color if a plane was banking towards or away from him. The "false canopy" carried that one step further by painting a dark area, in gunship gray, on the bottom of the fuselage to mimic the real thing up top. Not Every F-4G had the false canopy, but many did.

I will try to get some images posted tomorrow so you can see what I am describing.

Calling it completed

SHenyang F-6b Chinese AF

Interesting to see how different background colors and sun/shade makes the alclad look totally different.

And then a nice comparason with the Trumpeter MiG 17

Not a big Mig fan, but that's a nice build. You really have that Alclad application down.

Building a kit from your stash is like cutting a head off a Hydra, two more take it's place.

Theuns that is a beauty indeed! Very nice work!Toast

Nomad, sorry for the delay on this. Here is the Hill II scheme worn on F-4Gs. Compare it to the kit painting instructions.

And here is a great view of the real Weasel with a pair of Ghost Gray Sparrows in the rear missile wells. Plus a pair of HARMs and Mavericks. Looks like the ECM pod is in Gray also.

Awesome. Thanks for the great information. Looks like it is the Hill 2 scheme for the Phantom. Plus the false canopy.

Awesome build. Love the Alclad paint job. I'm gonna have to build another plane that uses Alclad paint.

Okay this is what I have so far. The lines on the paint job is not as straight as I would like but I can live with it. I had problems trying to mask the lines on the upper part of the plane. I have not done the lower half.

"but I can live with that"

What you said there is the most important thing in modling I think. I always tried to build up to some one else's standards and was really dissapointed when I failed to meet it (in my eyes).

Since I have started building for the pure fun of it I have been having a ball and strangely my skills have improved cause I do not focus purely on the "technical" side only.

Your Phantom looks good :-)   Maby I should add one to my stach sawell....

Thanks Theuns,

Things have been good on this build but I know I can do better with the paint job. I will have to rethink on how to get the curved parts done better. I will survive and make it better in the long run.

I have got the lower side painted but can not take any photos right now as my desk is so cluttered with things out of my drawers. I will post later when I get everything cleaned up.

For curved lines I cut tamiya tape to about 1mm wide , then they can form to the radius I need ofr painting.

If you want a softer paint edge, roll some 1/8" diameter blue tack "worrms" and stick that on the masking tape's edges and spray over them.

I think I got it. I used a hole punch to make the masks for the rounded places on the upper part. It worked great. Thank you Theuns for the help.

I was wondering if I can go ahead and put the decals on and then finish the rest of the build when I get the new instructuion manual? Please let me know what you think.

Here are the update photos.
