Steve: Hopefully I'll get moving on this sometime next month. I haven't been feeling that well, and with the 'Defense of the West/Armour in the West' GBs ending early next month I've been working at getting them finished or close to it before the deadline.

I was looking at a build-up of the howitzer on 'Modeling the US Army' and gee this thing is going to take a pile of work if I try to make it halfway accurate.

The field is wide open. I'm building a working trebuchet, a 24 ponder navel gun and rail hauled 60 cm Mörser Karl.
I guess it depends on what you'r interest is. Jgeratic is doing an 81 mm mortar crew, Rob is building a French Napoleonic field piece, Pvt Mutt and Gamera are building more modern field guns, non of which are way high price wise, I'm guessing, but probably pretty nicely detailed.
I kinda like the rocket launcher angle, we don't have one of those yet.

Theuns

you can find Tamiya towed FLAK pretty cheaply and they make nice builds. some of the Trumpeter guns are nice though the soviet tracked 203mm might be a bit much. also the afv club sIG-33 150mm or the M-102 (modern) are nice. a PRIEST would be easy if you want a track.DANA is an interesting build though big for a first build.

i have a number of missiles in the stash too, SCUD, SS-25, PATRIOT, SAM-2.

talking about crossovers my PATRIOT would fit here, Japanese GB IV, Boeing, and 1/72 when i start the annual one.

Thanx for the feedback, I will go see what is available at my hobby shop.

I wanted to do a 1/35 Denel land systems G-5 ( like the US forces were searching for Sadam's stach in the gulf)  but in all resin it's above my budget :-(

That's coming right along Tony, pretty cool! I love the metal barrel.

I done with the Trebuchet. I glued lead bird shot some into the counterweight box for weight.

Steve

Here is a video of it working. It was taken in my garage. The "rock" is laying on the slide. As soon as it is launched, you can see it land if you look real hard.

Thanks Tony.

It went together in about 2 1/2 hours. I thought it was a really neet subject, and my grandsons can learn something from it as well.

that catapult thingie is cool and different. hope to finish up exhaust system for generator for K-5 on sunday and get more work done on the breech and elevation mechanism.  broke part of a coupler but no one will notice. (NOW EVERYONE WILL NOTICE), 6 axle trucks are at that just a little bit to tweak stage.at least until i decide to over spray a lighter yellow and mask for red brown and green camo.

didn't feel like working on it tonight so i grabbed an old KV-2 i used for a pin wash demo and made some mud for the suspension (Liquidtex, water, acrylic paint, sawdust and coffee grounds) then went crazy pin washing and dot filtering the rest of it.(first time i have tried dot filters)  will fit in special 50 SHADES OF GREEN at regional. maybe a vignette  with it off the road with a thrown track and a German panzer or soldier going by.

may get a wild hair and pull out an M-102 and bash it out for this and USMC GB and June regional

Wayne,

That K5 is going to be an awesome build and an M-102 would make a nice addition to the front page. Were you still thinking of possibly building the Atomic Cannon?

GT,

I got the front page updated.

The  trebuchet is awesome Steve! I think I said I'd love to have one to hurl jelly beans at our Dungeons & Dragons figures but it probably would only get used once or twice and I've got enough stuff gathering dust. Still awesome video clip there!!!

How bout that Big Boy sling shot…..

Mutt i'm all about the metal barrels too.  I don't mind sanding seams, but it's one thing that everybody looks at so you have to careful as to not remove to much material and in the end they just don't look as good. Cool gun…

So, here's what I've got in store for me with this Italeri kit. SOFT HDPE plastic, so gotta figure out how to glue it, that's gonna be an issue. I've read about roughing up the surfaces to be glued and use 2 part epoxy, so, I'll give that a try. Anyway, the kit comes with 10 figures, but, they are just 5 figures x 2 each, so, I'm not going to use the second set. There will be only 1 officer and 2 men per gun. Not true, but, the other guys will be just 'off set' at the exact moment of my dio. Here's some dry fitting to see what I'm in for and the TON of clean up needed on the mold lines on almost every single piece:

This 6" howitzer barrel is in two pieces..gonna be tough to glue together. Dunno why they use this plastic for model kits!!!

Here's the Gribeauval 12 pounder with crew and the officer standing by:

Let the clean up begin!

Ouch, good luck with those Rob! I picked up some figures with the same sort of plastic twenty or so years ago without knowing what they were. I hate the stuff, you can't sand off the seam lines and regular plastic cement won't work on it. I found that out when I got, yes duplicate figures too, and tried cutting the arms off and repositioning them.  Then on top of that they wouldn't hold paint, it wanted to flake off constantly!

You might use a very sharp new knife blade to shave the seams off and 'rubber bumper' paint as a primer. That's all I know, I've avoided these guys like a plague since then. Good luck sir!

Rob,

Sounds like your in for some work, good luck with that. They will look awesome once your finished.

You may need both sets of guys. One for experimentation.

So, yeah, I thought I'd say 'to heck with it, let's see what Tamiya acrylic can do'.....yeah, wiped it off that soft plastic after first handling. Gotta get creative on this build. Gonna try to decant some Krylon paint and see what happens.

OK, I'm back on track. Krylon Fusion brand paint for plastic did the trick. It's formulated to stick to slippery plastic, especially this HDPE plastic. So, I'll use it as a primer then coat with a lighter colour to begin principle painting:
