Nice smooth and realistic finish, Nick.  What metalizer did you use?  I always liked Floquils various silvers--till they went off the market.

The variation in the panels is impressive, too.

Coatings would make the decks too slippery so the act of swabbing and hollystoning to keep the decks smooth and in condition was practiced from the dawn of sail through WW2.  Later in the war, stains were used to cammo the deck.  If paint was used, then it had to be mixed with sand or some other abrasive to allow for traction.  Decks were generally replaced during refits.  

I prefer to make my decks a sand color or grey, such as with my Constitution. Deck colors would depend on the wood used, which pine was common.  I also don't like the deck to stand out and detract from the rest of the ship.  I prefer it to blend in.

I think it's interesting the way different navies handled the deck issue.  I see quite a few ship models around the web showing all sorts of variations.  Seems to me, what with harsh conditions at sea, even an unpainted deck would have to be protected by some kind of coating.

Am not sure either about Kriegsmarine deck colour, but there is a youtube vid with some colour footage.  Being old film and quality, take what is seen with a grain of salt?

Great start, Scott.  How did the Germans treat the decks?  Did they paint them or apply some kind of clear varnish to achieve the natural wood look?  I've only built US ships, so I know nothing about practices in other navies.

 

CM, I really am not sure, I've seen pictures of the crew on the PE hollystoning and swabbing the decks in early 1941, so I may assume that the wood is a dull brownish grey.  I think I'm going to research that a little farther.  I know there is are a number of debates on a few other forums about it, but trying to follow those and come to a conclusion makes my head hurt.  

Thanks Steve, I have always like the lines of the Hipper Class cruiser.  I think the US installed much of the lines into the Alaska Class.  Which BTW I hope comes out in 1/700 from Hobbyboss.

I know I have sworn off PE on 1/700 class models after almost going insane on the Oriskany and Enterprise, but I couldn't help myself when I picked up a Tom's Modelworks set for $3 at a swapmeet.

Well I have chrome yellow wings and bright yellow tail both are model master the cowling is going ford engine blue

Nick, the yellow looks fantastic. Since you are going back to enamels I assume you used acrylic flat yellow then?

I painted the deck surfaces with a base coat, and now am building all the sub-assembly structures.  There are a lot of small parts that require a lot of alignment adjustments.  None of the sub-assemblies are glued on, but each one needs to be test fitted and trimmed to the other for a perfect fit.

I am wondering about changing colour schemes on the Defiant - I saw this the other day:

But I couldn't find definitive proof this was a 1941 scheme, so back to the black night fighter scheme...

Painted it silver over a black base - it is not smooth, but I want a bit of roughness to it.

Sorry my ADD kicks in every now and then . I haven’t done a yellow wnged build in some time I will give it my best shot Scott this kit was in my stach for a number of years I can see why now lol!

I got some bench time in last night on the Prinz.  Nothing to really show, just hours of building sub assemblies of guns and sub-structures in 1/700 scale.

I got the Prinz Eugen out of the box, parts cleaned up, and starting to paint up the deck tonight.  

Shaping up really well, lost!  Nice going!
