I like the SU 100 too, but my chosen scale for armor is 1/48. I'll look forward to seeing your Spitfire Bossman.

I've raced ahead with my Hunter conversion, I've just used the kit pieces and decals for the cockpit, as with it closed its difficult to see much more than the seat. I cleaned up the inside of the intakes, filled the ejection pin marks there, and closed it all up. These photos shows the Alley Cat conversion parts in place for the nose wheel bay, nose and rear fuselage. The next phase is to clean this all up.

Cheers

Tony

I'm just taking it one GB at a time.

Bish

Duke, thats some really nice work there. I like the look of the SS-100, i have decided to use that kit for my Do 24.

Thanks Bish! I had a bit of a setback with the trailer that I'll try to post soon. I did get it back on track though so I'm almost done with this. Pics forthcoming...

That Spitfire is going to look nice, I've been wanting to see one of them built.

Nice work on that Hunter, Tony. It looks like it's coming along well.

Hi Everyone,

I would like to join in here with an Academy AH-64A. This will be my first build on here. I have build a few models before in HO scale (1:87) and thought I would like to give some other scales a go.

I'm sure I will need some advice as I proceed and if you see me do something silly, let me know. I'm looking to improve my skills so any help is appreciated.

You got it Dan, welcome aboard Welcome Sign. Wayne will get you on the roster when he can.

OK - I put in the first short night o'this build.
Just a little interior painting, a bit of a wash in spots to draw out some of the finer detail in the cockpit (may need some rework to darken), and some flash removal.  This is quite a flashy set of sprues - but it is pretty thin and easily removed.  No problems at all.

So far - I'm impressed with the fine surface detail in this kit.  Very nice.

Right now I'm kindof glad to be working on a kit with a small parts count (I recently wrapped up some larger twin engine kits with high parts counts that have taken quite a while.)

This kit has the option of being built with either the full elliptical wing or the clipped/squared off wing tips.  I like the look of the clipped wings - and it will take up a little less shelf space that way, so that's how this one will be built.

Enuf blabbing . . .  I know you just wanna see pics.

Thanks for welcoming me to your build !    Nice work going on here !

Hi everyone,
I have made a small amount of progress but have already come across an issue I need to fix. While dry fitting the parts for the engine pods I discovered that the two halves of the pod do not line up with the intake on the front properly, the two assembled halves were too thin compared to the intake.

I had read some reviews that said this kit goes together pretty well so I was a little surprised to find this. Maybe I just have high expectations. I did some investigation and found a drawing on the internet with some cross-sections including one through the engine pods so I took some measurements and found the kit engine pod was about 0.6mm too thin. I got some styrene strip, glued it in and rechecked the thickness against the intake and it is much better.

I know it looks ridiculous at this point but once I have trimmed the styrene it will look much better. I have also started fitting the cockpit together which at this point feels like a few random parts just sitting on top of each other. I’ll probably try to make it all fit together a bit better. The worst thing was the ejector pin mark right in the middle of the front of the backrest. I destroyed some of the detail sanding the first one off but found I could scrape the mark off on the second one.

Night 2 progress report . . .

Refined the wash on the cockpit and added some darkening lines with a super sharp pencil.

Added a bit of dry brushing and white/red/yellow detail to the instrument panel.  Added a dot of future over each dial face.

Assembled the two fuselage halves,  Assembled the upper wing halves on the lower wing, added the cropped wing caps - and this is what I'm left with.   Man this is a tiny kit.  The spitfire is not a large plane.  Some sanding and filling (and sanding) to do yet.

The molds are dated 1996 for those who are into that kind of thing.

I'm whooped - its been a long work week.

Have a great Mother's day weekend everyone !

Theuns

Not really allot to report on, just filling and sanding - my least fav job.

Theuns

as long as i have the time i enjoy the usual filing and sanding. i find it relaxing but then again consider the source.Geeked

THANKS TO EVERYONE KEEPING UP IN MY ABSENCE. think i had more unscheduled time when i was working freelance graphics than i do now. school is over in 2 weeks but i signed up to teach my first class (Osher Livelong Learning Institute) in the fall; a 10 hour class on the Siege of Leningrad followed in january by 16 hours on The Great Patriotic War. so with summer coming i am breaking down the model tables in the study to make room for research and board wargames. and moving to the cooler bunker. looks like my build is going to revert to ww2 armor to use in my classes or borrow a bunch from friends.

my sFH-18 from Toxso took a first out of 9 OTS armor at annual club contest. other 3 awards were show up ones but the gun was a nice surprise. my JGSDF 8x8 which i thought was the better build didn't place.

picked up 3 OTS airplanes at another club raffle

Theuns, nice work on the 110. It's a bit basic, but you should see the interiors of their new He-111 and Do-17, they're gorgeous.

Wayne, I'm going to start off with a ground target.  Said target is the M998 Gun Truck from Dragon kit 7309.  Got to see if I can find a M2, the SAW in the kit just doesn't seem to cut it.

Very nice work on the 110 Theuns.  It is great to see Airfix putting out all these excellent new kits.  They are real gems.

Did some filling on the Spit V, and attached the wings, and then filled some more.

There were some minor shrinkage and shape issues with the mold for this kit.  Check out the uneven-ness of the seam on the "hood".  The high points shift from one side to the other and back.  Can't say I've ever had that happen before.

Also - the top of the "hood" is not rounded - it's dead flat.  Almost looks like the front of a Dewoitine d520.   I left it as-is.  I figured I'd lose too much detail if I tried to sand it round.

Needed a little filler at the wing roots . . .

. . . and some low spots and gaps on the underside where the wing joins the fuselage.

All in all - the major seams aren't perfect - but they are certainly correctable.  not bad for a cheap kit.  And the surface detail is nice - it should show up nicely with a weathering wash.

I like your splinter camo on that 110, Theuns. I've got one in the stash myself, so you might have caused it to get promoted a little.

Whats paints did you use, I like the definition between colours.

Your Spitfire is looking good Chris.

I've got my Hunter ready for priming after several dayts of seam correction and rescribing.

Regards

The bottom of the 110 is humbrol 65, the lighter of the greens is umbrol 30 and the kit calls for humbrol 91 for the darker of the greens.

I however here used the new range of humbrol RLM 70.(HU 241) I am sure HU91 would work just as well.

I need to just get some "oompf" to complete this aerie now, I am also busy on my 1/32 tam Mustprang and that take allot of my build energy LOL.

Love the little Hunter, I have a mate who owns a full size ex swiss Mk 9 and mk 68. I repainted the 68 into swiss colours for him many years ago.....talk about having to buy your humbrol in bulk  lol

Thanks Theuns. I had planned to prime my Hunter today, but it was just too windy to avoid all that dust in the garage.

Maybe tomorrow....

Man these decals (first "new generation" airfix) are horrible, they just do not conform well to the model like the later make airfix stuff :-(

I am sad to report that the results of my efforts on the 110 is way below what I expected.

The canopy masking was a failure, the decals (even with a gloss base and loads of microsol) has silvered and I just do not like the model anymore, I will rather just call it quits and not waste any more effort on it.

Please scrap it from the roster, I will come up wit another OTS build soon :-)

hate it when that happens, especially in a GB. that happen to me with a BM-21 MRL

of late i seem to be hit and miss on my builds. maybe i need to put EVERYTHING away and start a fresh kit on a clean uncluttered work station.

Yeah, sorry about that Theuns. I had to do the same thing with the Airfix Dauntless. Luckily I didn’t post anything on it yet before I decided to give it up.

Wayne,

I have to do that on occasion. Last night I searched for about an hour for PE for the 1/350 Eugen...I finally found it but decided I needed to clean off my bench.

grabbed an old 1/8 CLERGET 9 cylinder radial i got at a stash auction our club did for the widow of one of our members. a bit started and the stand is miising but WTH; it's different, i can make a stand, and it will look nice when finished. using various chrome silvers, steels, metallic grays (no doubt artistic vs accurate). have 3 more aeroengines engines in the stash and a corvette supercharged 283.

am trying something new on 1/35 JGSDF TYPE 87 6x6 for the vision blocks. that will be amusing. another OTS  is in the future too probably a former BdW 6x6 MAN in blue THW colors.

Wow !   alotta a/c going down in flames.   Theuns - Ouch !  That already seemed like a lot of work on the 110.  A shame to see it all for naught.  And we're down Steve's Dauntless - ugh !  A tragedy !  There are so few of those built up - but especially in 1/72.  I was really looking forward to that one.  And it looks like Jimbot's Chinook kinda flew away - another one that looked so impressive - hate to miss seeing that one come together.

The Hunter is looking great Tony.  Keep truckin' man.

Painting has begun on the Spit V.

Base colors were applied several days ago.  I used a lightened Neutral Grey for the underside and lightened ocean grey for the topside (I brush on slightly watered down MM Acrylics).  A little post shading was done on the neutral grey by using unlightened neutral grey straight from the bottle (maybe a darker pin wash later).

Then came a little more assembly and the lightened RAF dark green as the second topside color. I finished the camo this evening.  For me - painting camo patterns and decaling are my favorite parts of the build (don't know why - it's just relaxing I guess)

Sky "S" was used for the spinner (not lightened) and there will be a Sky "S" fuselage band just forward of the tail yet to come.

lightened flat black in various degrees for the prop blades and tires.

About a year ago I started using a Sharpie silver marker for all my bare metal detail painting - like the struts and wheel hubs on this kit.  It is a very fine silver fleck that I find looks better than some metallic paints.  But the real advantage is no prep - and no clean up.  It's way too easy.

So here she is.  Only the fiddly parts are left on the sprues.

Pick some good ones to replace the 110 and the Dauntless.

Ah well, it happens. Sometines the results on a kit is far from what I wanted and then it is better just to scrap it and forget abouth the thing dragging my "want to build" down and making me negative about other builds.

No big deal thiugh, it's not the first and nor will it be the last I am sure. I will rather spend my efforts on something I enjoy and hopefully get good results from it :-)

Yeah, I was pretty stoked about it to. RobS ran into the same fit issues with his Dauntless build, though he had more patience and went further than I did before tossing it in the trash bin. I still want to out a Dauntless on my shelf, just maybe not in 1/72.

I gave my 7 year old the BF 110 and she can play with it....the joy she gets from my failed model is better than trashing it or keeping it in a box never to see daylight again :-)

Great looking camo Chris. Now I must have missed it. Did you mask it or hand paint it? I'm excited to see the finished product.

Started on the gun truck last night.  These are pretty simple little kits, but they build up pretty nice.

Start pic

Frame installed

Suspension installed

Will have to stop by the LHS on the way home and pick up some rattle can Tamiya NATO Green.  Wayne, if you need a pic of the boxtop let me know.
