That is some impressive detail on the underside.

Great looking camo Chris. Now I must have missed it. Did you mask it or hand paint it? I'm excited to see the finished product.

Almost everything I paint is brushed on using slightly watered down MM acrylics.  The one exception is white.  I'll usually use a rattle can spray for white.

No Masks - just freehanded, watching where the lines between colors cross certain panel lines.  It's not exact - but it's close enuf for my eyes.  I've found that those lines tend to vary from one manufacturer's set of instructions to another - and one artist's profile to another.  So I don't worry about getting it exact.

After the decals are on, I usually use rattle can Testors dull coat to finish it off.  Then maybe some pastel dusting for exhaust stains.

Wayne,

While I working on the Eugen and completing the painting on the 747, I will be starting the Mariner. I will be building this in a base landing on the water. My hope is to show it at the Salt Lake IPMS contest in September.

Bossman, I'm looking forward to seeing that gun truck built. I have one in the stash as well.

Modelcrazy, that is gonna be cool! I have the Hasegawa Mariner in 1/72 scale, so I'll be watching that with great interest!

I finished up my SS-100 and trailer alrady, I just need to get some pics taken. I hope to get it posted up fairly soon.

Duke,

The gun truck is Lew's - but I agree - something to watch with anticipation !

And Steve's Mariner looks like a big undertaking.  These will all be nice to se as they progress.

LOL, I don't think I do little undertakings anymore.
Actually I may do a 1/350 Schnellboot on the water (came with the Eugin). It's only about 3 or 4 inches long. Shouldn't take too long.

Thanks for settiing me straight. It's tough getting it right sometimes when there's no summary of the last set of posts to refer back to when replying.

I've got some work today so it might be a couple days before I get my pics posted.

Hi Y'all,

After a few nights of decaling, and painting the yellow on the wing leading edges - here's an update . . .

Odd things about these decals.  some good - some bad.

First - they went on like a dream !  They were very thin and conformed to the surfaces incredibly well with a moderate application of micro-sol.  Even with the very fine recessed surface detail on this kit - they conformed to show it after they dried on.  Very nice !

Second - I made a mistake placing the letter codes on the starboard side.  You don't really notice it when you look at it from either side . . .

But when you see it from above - you can tell it's off.  I didn't correct it fast enough and it was settled down pretty thoroughly by the time I noticed my mistake.

In the decaling diagram the starboard roundel is slightly forward of the port one - but not THIS much !

And then the decal sheet had two mistakes that I noticed.  The first was the underwing roundels.  The white ring between the blue outer circle and the inner red dot was missing.  it was just transparent there.  I corrected it by using the other (different sized) under-roundels that came with the kit, cut off their blue outer rings and applying only the white and red parts.  Then I placed the "correct roundels over these so that the white ring shone through the transparent part.  it turned out OK to my eyes.

The second mistake was the square stencils that are unique to british aircraft.  They show up mostly on the underside of the wings.  These are pretty much the same size as the squares that I have on a 1/48 Spitfire - so theyre pretty big and bold - a little too much.

Here's an overall view.  I would love to hear any critiques . . .

It's gettin late - time to hit the sack.

Model on my friends !

Sorry Chris, I've been down for a couple of days due to foot surgery. Your Spit looks excellent. The fuse roundels aren’t noticeable unless you look from the top.
I was able to get some work done on the Mariner. The interior detail is fair for 1/72. Academy went to great lengths to install the engineers compartment including radios although you can’t see it, while the cockpit detail is somewhat sparse considering. They didn’t include any pilots so since the build will be shown landing, I had to recruit some Luftwaffe pilots form a Preiser set I had, much to their disapproval. The fuselage fit is excellent.

Some more work on the Mariner and started the base. The kits fit is excelent!
The base will be small, just encompassing the fuselage. The wings will extend far beyond the base.
I started it my usual way, with Styrofoam and paper attached with acrylic gel. The hole is obviously for the fuselage.

Yep, I got for Christmas from my son-in-law. It is going together very well, and shouldn't take too long to finish.

Really nice work on the Mariner Steve.  The fit of the surfaces looks really nice from what I can see.  Did it need ANY filler ?

The Mariner has such a cool shape - very unique - rather . . .   "Hulking" !

Hi Chris,

The fit is excellent, however I have used some filler for a few seams such as where the outer wing section fits to the center section, but nothing a little Mr. Dissolved Putty couldn't handle. There are some seams I applied it for the heck of it.

I added a second coat of acrylic gel to the base and started to form the waves and wake. When dry, this will be sanded, painted and another coat of gel will be applied and painted. I've noticed if I paint a coat, sand and add a second coat of gel, and paint again, the variations in the paint hue will add to the color differences in the water. Cool! The wake however will be a turquoise hue for the churn.

WOOHOO!!! Got back on here and saw that last years build had finished and was a bit bummed....for a few minutes. AHH search!! Here you guys are!! Well, unfortunately I had a very abrupt move late last year and have not been able to get to the bench. Now with settled living arrangements and rearranging of the room the bench is again open for business!!Propeller Wayne, if Imay sir I am ready to go again and last week started a 1/72 Academy Sopwith Camel to get the juices flowing again. I would greatly appreciate an acceptance into this GB once more please? The kit, having only 18 total parts, is going together quickly. final painting gloss, decals, gloss, flat, rigging still to go, I think I'm safe in saying it's still below 50% complete. Will post a pic soon so you can confirm.

That is looking really good so far! I just acquired an SE.5 and a Fokker DVII in 1/72 scale myself. If I look at any more pics like this and I'll be convinced to dive right into them.

Keep going man!

Duke . . .   Head first man !  The water's fine !

Steve - I'm bracing myself for having my socks blown off with the water landing dio - and paying attention . . . looks like something I'd like to try.

CHRIS looking good on the Spitfire.

i did something similar with decals on an ME-163 a while back. misaligned one of the upper wing crosses and they were old decals to.

MC Mariner is looking good. i am doing more bases for my builds. going thru the stash i though i had an OTS B-52 but it's 1/100. i did pick up the ICM 3 axle German staff car, same as the one from them in 1/35. and ModelCollect has an OTS HEMMT Pershing II and a T-14 plus a bunch of russian MAZ wheels.

Lookng great MC!! I want one of those if I can come up with the cash, or the old Hase Shin-Meiwa PS-1. something about floaters that grabs ya.

Thanks Duke and BossmanSmile Put a coat of future on a bit ago, will have to go over it again to get the right sheen for the decals.

Wayne, I want to add another to the roster. OTS Italeri SM.81 Pipistrello. Broke sprue last night and attached the office bulkhead to the floor and sprayed the interior green just now as well. letting them cure for a bit then will start actually putting the office together. Color is Mr. Hobby H312 which according to the label is FS34227. Matches the color in the destructions so there it is lol. Going for the mind blowing camo of one stationed in Libya. Well here's the proverbials.Toast

ModelCollect has an OTS HEMMT Pershing II and a T-14 .....

Man, I've been trying to get those forever, but evreyone is always out of stock! Yet, I see so many people working on them, what's the deal? Man, I just cannot catch a break!

Modelcrazy, that Mariner is looking really good right now. I like it.

As for the WWI planes guys, I appreciate the encouragement. I just cleaned out my Hobby Room some and found far more Shelf Queens than I thought I had. I'm going to get as many of them done as I can just so I can clear a lot of boxes and debris away. Then maybe I'll dive in.

However, Simpilot, I have both the Mariner and the Shinmeiwa PS-1; I might instead start both of those to join my Be-6 Madge on the ceiling when things clear up.

Simpilot, that Pipistrello will be looking good! Well done on camo choice; I hope to see that one done!

I'll keep you guys posted.
