Very nice indede. You must have some good resurched material.  I'm always amazed how other modelers are able to find such small wire or metal rods. I have purchased all my local shops have it just seems never small enough.

Yep, i would third that. There position and size certainly look like ejection ports. Surprised you can't find them on line drawings Jack.

That would have been my guess was the spent shell dump. I think I read somewhere that the spent caseing was pulled straight back and at the rearward travel of  the extraction , the shell case would eject through the opening, and drop straight down and out, head end first. Those holes look large enough for the 12.5 mm or maybe the 20mm.

Dang Jack!! You're really putting alot of work into that bad boy. Are you going to display the engine cowls open or closed? There is an engine exposed you know. Wink

Those square ports are exhaust chutes for the spent ammo casings from the cowl guns.

Thanks guys - yeah, should of mentioned the wire protruding out of the top wing still had to be snipped and sanded flush.  The wire is .006 inch diameter, though I should of done the math beforehand.   Calculating that to 1/72 scale would make it almost  11mm, which I think is still too large, so should of gone with half that size I think?

Got a test fit of the wing and fuselage.  Topside seam looks near perfect, while on the underside, I may have sanded a bit too much, hence the white sheet plastic in place.  I want to achieve a near fit as possible to avoid any sanding.  There is some rivet detail missing (marked in red).

Any idea what those square holes are?  They don't appear to be present in the line drawings I've looked at.

regards,

Jack

Jack... the radiator stiffeners are almost always WAY to thick and need to be cut out and replaced. I've always used a piece of plastistruct or evergreen round cut to fit.... I like your way better! Thanks for sharing.

Second update ...

Pilot and cockpit done - nothing really special with the kit, detail is sufficient given the scale.  Machine gun sub-assembly also in position.

Upper wing halves glued onto lower wing.  Before doing that, I did measure out and drilled holes to place some wire as a brace/post in front of the rads.  A bit more work sliding the wire through the upper wing, but at least here it is more sturdier with the thicker plastic than trying to drill a hole in the rad itself.  Plus, cleanup of the surface is free of any worries of marring surrounding detail.

The kit includes three types of rudders - for the 109 G-6/AS, the taller rudder without the extra trim tabs on the trailing edge is the one to go with.  Also removed the raised detail representing the actuator arm, replacing with stainless steel wire.

The underside fuselage intake is perhaps the one area requiring the most attention for backdating, as it needs to be the earlier shallow type.  I've made a start of cutting it open by scribing with a needle.  Razor saw would be quicker, but I find the blades too flimsy to give a straight cut.  A couple bulges in the forward end also need to be removed.

regards,

Jack

Really looking good. I really like the 2 color recognition band. It looks like your kit has the mounting for 2 extra gas tanks behind the front landing gear.

I ordered my 262 kit because it showed those on the box art. But there not part of the kit. Bummer.

Guys , Thank you... As I said before, this kit isn't bad at all. Other then a few little flubs, not unseen with other kits.... I'd buy another.

Black Dog, yes it does and yes I'll use then. I figure that lifting and carrying a Ju88, well, you better have xtra fuel! lol... If you have a couple of old bombs, use them, fins removed of course. If you look at a kit that comes with them, there is a decal that comes with it to apply to tank that says , Kien Bombe, (I think) which means not a bomb. lolol...Yeah, just take your time on the squiggles and they will be fine. Just make sure that you mix enough paint(and it won't take much) I always have issues where the paint is working wonderfully, I run out, then I cant get it mixed the same and its noticable! Then I have to go back over mostly everything again to get it the same! lolol...

Thanks again all...

Doug

LOL...Joe, your a real funny guy! lol... No really. 72nds are too small for my aging a**. Although, sometimes a 72nd jet model is OK, since there about the size of a 48th prop plane. Any way... DECALS!!!

As I apply decals, I'm also doing the weathering on this one... seems to be working out OK at this point.

So far so good, I was going to use chalk dusting on this one to show detail, but I can't find my fixative to seal it with. Any way the AK liquids seem to be doing what I wanted it to do. Well any way, thanks for looking and soon as this sets up, we'll start mounting them together. Take care all!

Thanks moors.

So far it's been nice haven't got to far into it. I picked this one over my Dragon ta-152 because this one has the back of the motor that can be seen in the wheel well openings. There's also the fact I would have to cut the hole front of the Dragon kit has to be cut off and replaced with another in the kit. Lol not sure I'm ready for that.

Don't worry.....you'll get there.

jack: You're doing some amazing work starting with the pilot and again with the use of those gun barrels in such small scale.

rocker: Man you are making me freekin' hungry with those dang ribs bubba!!!! Wow! I'm going to have get me a couple of racks of those this weekend now that you've shown that!! Looks like some good progress on the 262 fella!

Blackdog: It's surely great to have you in here and with another of Kurt Tank's beauties at that!!!! Really looking forward to seeing this one come together. Will be entering your entry in the intro.

Doug: You really bring alot to the show with your paint work. Only now I see that you're in the 1/72nd scale swing of things. Yes

Andy: Smokin' through that one right there!! Good lookin' set of seat belts you've got yourself there. I'll put you down in the intro as well buddy.

Everybody: I apologize for the absence over the weekend. Went out of town and the family still hasn't recovered yet. Thanks for hanging in there with me and being patient fellas. My wife doesn't have the energy she used to have before her aneurysm so I step in alot for her and take care of alot of the day to day chores and making sure our son is doing what he's supposed to do in school which proves to be a full time job in itself.

Fantastic work from everyone here and looking forward to more. You guys rock!

Edit: Andy and blackdog....your new entries are now in the intro post.

Andy... I'm just using plain ole lacquer thinner. Depending what I want the paint to do, I've used water, isopropol rubbing, 70% to 90%, Lacquer thinner, and even windex glass cleaner on occasion. That 72nd 262 your doing really looks like it has some detail too it. Its looking good...

Thanks Bish. Yeah it's the 72nd kit. It just has decals for the cockpit. I did some very simple scratch work to give it depth but it can't really be seen.

I have a couple of their 262's but not built one yet. I was surprised to learn they all date from 1985, they have nopt re-tooled it since, just new parts or decals.

I've got started on my Hasegawa ME262. The kit has gone together pretty much pain free but the pit has next to no detail but can't see much in ther anyway. I did add some belts made from masking tape to spruce things up a bit. I just need to remember to add some weight before closing attaching the gun covers in the front.Big Smile
