Mach1

Would you put me down for Revell's "Battle of Midway Carrier" please. I'll be building it as CV-6 USS Enterprise. A friend has been pushing me to branch out into naval subjects and this looks like the perfect opportunity.

Wow Mach1...that's a big one to start out on. I will enjoy watching you buidl it. Enjoy!

Jef, I changed your entry. I'll be looking forward to it. I've been wanting an AB for a while.

Steve

At the rate I'm building though getting something done by the end of time is overly optimistic

Hey all, Count me in. I’ll be building the USS The Sullivans. It will be only my second ship and my first crack at 1:350 and photo etch.

IIRC the movie on the Sullivan's mentioned that, but the Navy let it slide that early in the war.

Still looking forward to the build and hope to do mine justice when she gets on the ways

The film about the brothers has always stuck in my mind after watching it many years ago, the loss and sacrifice of a family. The heartache of the parents, I could feel that as a kid never mind now as a parent myself. I was going to do a PE boat P177 that I have had for some time but a GB that doesn't need to be rushed was the ideal time to be build this ship and hopefully do it justice. I look forward to starting it.

The one reasonable option for a model of Juneau is to take the 1/700 Pit Road/ Dragon kit of Atlanta and try to figure out the camouflage. Gator makes a good mask set for her Measure 12 Modified scheme. That works overall, and also above the deck at the end.

That, my shipmates, makes the BB-39 color discussion look like Sunday School.

Currently in progress at my bench.

The Sole Survivor Regulation was not enacted until 1948. Prior to that, the thought was a policy.

I think what gave the Sullivan bros. a special place was that they had been heavily celebrated in the media as an example (correctly so) of the supreme sacrifice a family would make even to be in service.

My wife's six maternal uncles all served in WW2, as did her father and his brother. By God's grace none of them were killed, however they all came home with wounds both physical and emotional.

I think someday there will be a USS The Sullivans in space.

This conversation is opening a can of worms. Doing a little googling I read that the rule prohibiting siblings serving together already existed but the brothers insisted.  I find that a little suspect- can't imagine many enlisted men told the Navy how to operate.

Elsewhere I read the sinking of the USS Juneau was the start of the rule as Goldhammer stated.

Modeling the Juneau is also of interest.  However available models look like they may be out of my price range or not yet available (Dragon). Not to mention its complex camo. Not sure I'd be able to do it justice.

I'm not trying to start a debate just sharing what i found. Interesting indeed.  Looks like I need to buy more models!

I'm really looking forward to this GB.

Weren't the Sullivans brothers, or am I getting my WW2 history mixed up?

.

The five Sullivan brothers were World War II sailors who, serving together on the light cruiser USS Juneau, were all killed in action on its sinking around November 13, 1942

Thanks for the info. I thought I read 2 or 3. I forgot it was 5. Terrible times.

I may need to order this one too for display.

Decision made please put me down for Trumpeter's 350 USS The Sullivans DD-537.

Joe

I'll look forward to this, as it is in the stash from a fellow club memberselling off his collection of kits.

I'm also looking forward to this.  I was going back and forth between The Sullivans or the USS England and finally decided to buy the England.

Crown, I got you down. That's on oldie allright.

GAF, that looks like it's certainly doable.

GH, it can be any more of a project than the Prince of Wales. Confused The problem is getting the time to do it. Once we finish with the garage sales and emptying the storage I'll have more time.

MC- I think you are working on the other end of the "bit off more than can chew" log that I got hold of.

Ambitious project but I know your skills with floaty thingies.

Steve, Bakster>  Thanks!  I'll see what I can do, though it's probably the most ambitious project I've ever undertaken.  Hope it doesn't become too much for me. Smile

Oh, and here's what she'll (hopefully) look like when completed.  This is the resin version.

I noted armament on these varied somewhat.  Research is key.

Here is my entry. I have been adding AM for a while now. I have a Pontos wood deck, metal gunbarrels for both the 16 and 5 inchers and Eduard's PE set. The camo will be almost as fun as the camo on the Prince of Wales.

Gam, I'm looking forward to that one.

The Drifter, I've, never seen that kit before, looks fun.

Ted, nice kit. I'd like to add it to my stash.

GAF, 15 inches, should be a nice size to scratch. I'm really intrested in that one. Watching your building ability there's no doubt you can do it.

Well, it seems that several from the Race into Space GB are comming over. Yes

I think I'm going with the ship my favorite uncle served on- Ironshipwright's 1/350th LST-1.

http://ironshipwrights.com/pages/LST.htm

I've got the ship number written down at home, don't think any of these had names.

I already have it in my stash. I'm a little leery, I've built resin SF garage before but never anything like this. I hope it's not too different and I'm not biting off something too big for me to chew.

*Gave it as 1/700th before, it is 1/350th- blame my aging memory.

I would still look at 1/700.  The law of cubes dictates that when you double the scale, the actual size of the object increases eight fold.

That could pose some challenges for my work space.

PS: I need spell check!
