From a book ive got (sorry to those that are against research books) Sherman Firefly by Mark Hayward

"The Firefly did not come ashore in Normandy in the first wave of the assault due to the inability to be converted to DD configeration, because of the long 17-pdr gun interfering with the collapsible screen. Second wave units certainly had them and they were seen ashore very soon after the landings."

"Probably the first to see combat alongside DD and other 75mm Shermans were the VCs of the Staffordshire Yeomanry. They ran into the 21st Panzer Division's assault towards the British beaches near Caen on the afternoon of 6th June"

theres more in the book but i dont want to be linched Big Smile [:D]

From my research it seems that the white star started out as an American symbol but was eventually adopted as an 'Allied' recognition marker, used by both the American and Commonwealth armies.

As a somewhat humourous side note I also found reference to Canadian units having a tendency to apply their stars rotated slightly off centre so as to distinguish themselves from Americans. I guess some things never change Smile [:)]

Guys,
I also have the Time D-Day book. Picked it up at Walmart for $9.89. Regular price is $10.99. It is very nice. I also saw it as a Hardcover version for $24.99 and our local Media Play (kind of like Barnes & Noble or Borders) had it on sale for $19.99.
Good luck on your builds.

Ron - Just to confirm, it does sound like you have a set of old DML Firefly markings, though the star and the name St George kind of throw me off a bit.

The Canadian markings for the 27th C.A.R. (Sherbrooke Fusilier Regiment) are good to go for D-day. They landed on June 6 and fought around Buron on the 7th.

The markings for the Northamptonshire Yeomanry may be able to be used for D-day too. But I've been unable to confirm their landing.

Hmmmmm .... let me check and see what you have there ... I'll get back to you.
It sounds as if you have the old DML marking set.

No problem .... IIRC, the Vc that you have is the DML offering and comes with a set of decals for the 13/18 Royal Hussars who were involved with the landings on D-Day itself. I think you have the markings for "Carole".

I am sorry guys, but I think I had better pull out of this build for now. I was going to do a Marder III M with a few of you, but I think I have too many other projects to finish up before I start one more kit. Once again, sorry…Disapprove [V]

to clear this up i will descrbe mine, and you (jeeves) tell me if it is like yours.
Mine has 89 pages counting the ads.
3 articles on D-Day.
And when you open up the cover you see a picture of a red car.
is this the same magazine?

Sorry bro-- this isn't the same thing. It's called D-Day 24 Hours that Saved the World with an Introduction by Tom Hanks. At 154 pages, it's more of a book really than a magazine. The picture is actually of an artifact at the D-Day museum...maybe you could email the museum and have them send you a pic of it?

Firefly Vc were used during the landings .... I'll need to root through some of my references to confirm if they went in on D-Day or D+1 or D+2.

For the couror of dirt imnot sure, but i can make some guesses. The weather was wet and cold, and it is on the coast. so probably a darker color.

I got the time magazine and i was wondering what page has the grappling hooks on it, so i can scan it.

Does anyone know what colour the earth would be around Juno Beach? I'm going to be doing a dirt road as part of my diorama and would like to make it as realistic as possible. Thanks.

Hey bro-- go to your local supermarket or store right now (actually- this is good advice for all in the group build)-- there is a special D-Day issue from Time for $11-- it is awesome and on page 60 is a picture and little caption of your grappling hook...if I had a scanner I'd scan it in for you..but the whole thing is the best issue I've seen on the 60th anniversary...although I haven't gotten my FSM yet LOL

thanks Jeeves! No off to my local Jewel...Oh sorry I forgot Jewel trademarked...Off to my local food product grocery store.

Jeeves & Rebel: Thanks for the clarification & reassurance. I'm new to the forum as you can probably tell & I haven't quite learned the ropes yet. So..... one Hawker Typhoon coming right up. In about a month, that is.
