Old Guns Build. 30+ an older.... Lets show these Young bucks a thing or two!

I've decided what I'm going to do and its a bit different, well the scale will be anyway. Another topic on the Auto form reminded me of a couple of kits I got years ago and have left in the cupboard. So after a bit of scambling around I located them and will start in a month or 2 on a 1/87th scale Cat dozer and logging arch (c 1950's) and a Mack cabover with a logging trailer typical of the sort used in New Zealand c 1980's).

I've just got a new set of glasses befitting us Old Guns so seeing those small pieces won't be a problem. Just to remind me of my (moderate) age my Wife gave me a walking stick for Father's Day a couple of weeks ago!!

Did you get the matching cane to suit as well???

ok here is two early pics of my build... the unfinished cockput area (needs to be cleaned up a little) and an external before I putty it up... I got the seams even and just stuck the floats on to hold it up... not even cemented yet...

kind of a dissapointing build, I picked up a Hobby Craft 1/24 Spitfire V today at Hobby Lobby, marked down from 119 dollars to 40, I guess no one wants em because the were still in the shrink wrap.. I asked the lady to open it and there was the PE and resin figures and stuff.. so everything was there...

Anyway I might build both.. because I am tired of the OS2U already and that spit is really looking like it needs to be built haha

tho99o your Kingfisher is comin along nicely champ,i wouldn't say dissapointing,just remember your'e your own worst critic,something that all modelers seem to have.......

thanks joe!!! yeah this kit did have some niceties about it... the PE in the cockpit was nice... some of the exterior stuff I am going to leave off as I have yet to find a reference pic with it on... i.e. handholds on the floats etc... maybe they were there but oo small to be seen by the camera, which means to me these are out of scale if they can be seen by the naked eye at 1/48 (most noticable actually) and not on real lifephotos...

happy birthday in advance!!!! yeah I know... my wife always harps on me about that... "Well I can't see ONE thing wrong with it!!!" she says. so I sit there trying to explain the little bit of seam showing on the engine nacelle etc.. is bad.. she just rolls her eyes and shakes her head... maybe I am trying to be a perfectionist... but I guess that is the only thing that makes me progress...

maybe that's why I am here... I see what good models look like and strive to make mine look as good/better... I gotta long way to go... but I'll get there!!! Some of the models I did at 23 look twice as good as mine at 38... so that's my mark I gotta reach I guess... I guess this is a modellers mid-life crisis... instead of getting lots of jewelry, hair implants and a convertible mustang, I'm getting 1/24 Spitfires with PE and resin?????

well j.s. i am a day late but happy birthday. i have a few months before i go to 37.

thought i would share a bit of my progress. i have eight hours in on this build and this is all the farther i am. the first night the pit went together like a dream. resin and pe, fit together great. then i gave the pit a wash and called it a night. the second night the fuse halves and the wings were a nightmere. the fit was horrible, the body was warped, large gaps, nothing to hold the tail in place, i spent four hours fighting with it. after much proding, pushing, pulling, and a good deal of glue i have these pics










thats it for now. was going to post pics of the pit but they are horrible. they were taken with a web cam and they turned out blurry and distorted.

looks nice! took me a sec to soak in the decals vs. the plane type haha... nice paint job! Rustyford has the badge for this one... since you're done you get the one with the long bear I guess...

I'm kinda in the same boat joe... got this high tech kingfisher from monogram.. I was all excited because it came with PE and stuff... the body didn't wanna align, the plastic is soft so I have to be REAL careful sanding it.. and after reviewing pics of kingfishers in action I realized some (a lot) of the PE is either not scale or didn't exist on the real thing... but I am gonna finish it if it kills me!!! It's a matter of principle now....

Strange though, after all is said and done, the average onlooker has no idea just how difficult it is sometimes to get a model to actually fit together.

Like tho9900 said, ill fitting kits are a matter of principle.
Personally I can't stand the thought of being beaten by styrene, to pigheaded I guess.
I have an Airfix Catalina in the cupboard that is an atrocious fit, but I will make it look good, one day.

Besides, modelling is good character building.
If one can spend 5 hours making a fuselage fit together, then one can spend 5 minutes talking to a total idiot about the weather.
It's all a matter of paience.

In the meantime, gonna break out the Bf109 G14 this weekend, and make a start on the cockpit.
Got alot of PE, and being 1/48 scale, it's gonna be a challenge for my old eyeballs.

haha I was eyeball challenged till today... got my new spectacles... I can't wait to try em out on that new 1/24 Spitfire I got... of course now that I have I was thinking how good a craft that big would look all dressed up with some pretty PE and fancy decals... seems lately I just can't get a model and build it... I gotta go for more...

Other than that, still a dust bowl in the middle of nowhere.
25,000 people, the largest beach in the world, you have to drive 1500 k's to get anywhere near a water source.
Roughly the same distance to get to a hobby shop also, hence I survive on mail order.

I gotta move to the coast!!!!!

just pick a model.. and it would be nice to see pics as you build... so people see how other people put their models together... I think 12/31 is the cutoff date to be finished...

haha that's funny Dan... the group badge is the picture of old man at the bottom left of this message I am typing... it signifies you are participating in the GB... when you complete it and post pics you get the comletion badge, the old man with a full beard...

I am building the Tamiya F4U-1a right now too for another group build... so far it is a dream to put together. I did buy the ares resin cockpit for it... so far just have the instrument panel together on it but it looks GOOD!!!! I am glad I got the extra parts... of course it was a nice cockpit out of the box too... I like Tamiya's models...

The model I am building for this one is an OS2U Kingfisher by monogram (out of production kit) it has some minor photoetched stuff but I didnt use most of it...

It's LPH-9 USS Guam it's an Amphibious assault ship... I was on her way back in1988 and it was the best deployment I have made... it was decommisioned about 1994 and in 1996 the 's did THIS to her!!! They used her to test some new anti ship weapon...

did you have it on tinypic? I noticed qwhile back it did that so I copied it from someone else who hosted it elsewhere and put it on photobucket... it came back but maybe it did it again...

ok here she goes... got a little more done today... put the first coat of paint down, I see a few areas that need touching up.... then when it cures I am going to hit is with a damp coat to ensure the color base is even and then finally seal it with Future.. I have a set of Super Scale decals for the Kingfisher I will use... of course I am going to use the 1944 set of the 4 for a plane with the tri-color scheme. After the decals set comes the floats, some miscellaneous hardware outside, a shot of dull... then the canopies!

Not sure if I am going to hang this or assemble the beaching gear. I think (even tho it's kind of an ugly, awkward looking plane) it would look real graceful making a sweeping turn over my computer desk... it's gotta bit of work left still but it's taking shape!

I was getting tired of working with this one due to a few problems due in part to the kits age so I decided to do with with a masking style I haven't done much of... taking the paper cutouts and sticking them on the body with Fun-Tak (blue tak) and brushing over that... I've only used that on splinter Luftwaffe camo before and it was taped almost flush to the surface... on this one I allowed a goo 1/4 or more gap to make the edges fade some... It faded a little too much on one or two spots but I can see I might start using it for the 3 color navy camo at least... on some of the smaller birds it's hard to hand do it (so far) and using tape makes it too sharp...

anyway, hope to have more tomorrow!

Looking good so far, but your right, it is an awkward looking bird, still looks good though.
