I built the Hasegawa 1:48 Bf109E-4 a while back and would certainly recommend it!

The Tamiya kit is reputed to be nice but the nose appears to be a bit off even for a non rivet counter like me!!

I am looking forward to getting down and dirty with the Monogram 1:48 Spit mkIIa and leaving my prized Tamiya Spit for a little later down the track!

Now where is my Tamiya putty?

cheers

Mike

Jules

Look forward to that, cheers!

I love the old kits and seem to pick them in preference to the Tamigawa kits in my stash, but the Tamiya Spit is a true work of art!

cheers

This question is probably in Darrens foray of expertise, but what kind of guns did the Defiant carry in the turret?

I want to replace these with a PE or resin item, since the turret is the first thing that draws your attention, the kit fare is pretty boring.

At worst I guess I could scratchbuild something, but detailing the breach etc, and the mounting system would require internal pics, which so far I have had little luck in obtaining.
Not to mention time would be against me, allowing for work, kid( he is so cute!!), and volleyball commitments.

Tweety

Defiants carried 4 x .303 Browning machine guns in the turrent, quite a surprise to the "emils" who thought they were Hurricanes and bounced them over France in 1940.

After that the Defiants were dead ducks and relegated to night fighter duties soon after.

cheers

interesting thing I found while researching is that the RAF B-24's used in the war also used the exact turret/gun assembly in the tail as the Defiant did.... in the nose they used a 20mm combo I have to go back to see which bomber they nabbed it off of, but I think the Halifax....

Hi all,

I've been missing in action for the last couple of days due to a hectic weekend. It's getting towards that time of year when I barley have a chance to scratch myself let alone log time on the PC or heaven forbid do some modeling.

Thanks very much for the kind words guys, they mean a lot.

Tom, the info that I have on the Defiant turret is that it is a license built French SAMM turret containing as Mike said four 0.303-in Colt-Browning machine guns with 600 rounds per gun. I never knew it was used in the B-24s, it certainly makes sense.

Cruzr, no problems I will change the title page. I am currently building the Tamiya Bf 109 E3 and it is a great kit. I don't know a lot about what the the nose is supposed to look like but I believe that the problem existed on the E3 but was supposed to have been fixed with the release of the E4/7 kit. Perhaps someone who knows about this stuff can set me straight.

Cheers
Darren

Darren

I was under the impression that Boulton Paul manufactured their own turrent?

"Boulton Paul had already a competitive edge, possessing an effective four-gun gun powered turret of their own design which was used in the Defiant"

Let me know more please!

cheers

Mike

Any pics you have Jules, would be EXTREMELY appreciated.
Internals of the Defiant aren't that easy to find, even on the Internet!!!!Shock [:O]Shock [:O]Shock [:O]

Darren, if memory serves me correctly, the Tamiya nose was incorrect in the way it tapers off towards the spinner, the gun ports, supercharger intake, and panel line configuration.

This was only on the old tooling of their 109, the kit number I am not sure ofSad [:(], but unless you have already purchased this kit, I'd go with the Hasegawa offering.

To fix the problem, have a look for pics of the Hase model on the net, and compare the differance.

Pretty good pics, and some nice models.

The Tamiya E3 was crtiqued for the shape of the nose. The later E4 tool was modified & looks more correct. The Hasegawa E's still look more accurate in that area, but overall, the Tamiya kits are better detailed. Both can be built up into excellent models.

that was my impression when I was reading about the B-24's.. it listed the RAF B-24's as Boulton Paul quad .303's in the tail and midsection. Later they converted to the consolidated and martin .50 cals.... and other variations but always had the boulton paul turret in the tail

wooverstone8. You're in, welcome to the GB, feel free to join in the pre-build chat and grab a copy of the tag.

tweets, here are a couple of items you may be interested in that are currently on eBay

Also, I stubbled across this, which is a modeling, article on the Defiant which might be of some help.
http://www.mousematsystems.com/modelling/model_site/pages/defiant/page2.html

On the Defiant turret issue it looks Mike and Tom were correct. I have done some more research and it appears that Boulton Paul submitted the design incorporating a the French SAMM turret, but the production machines used the A. Mk IID turret.

Thanks all for all the info on 109 noses and Mike that's a fine looking Emil.

Cheers

Darren, you continuely out do yourself.
Have to get into those pics on ebay, they would be very useful.

That Defiant article is great.

Mike, I like the light weathering on the Emil.
Is it a wash you put on, or a preshade, 'cause it looks fantastic!
Well done

I used an oil wash (mix of raw sienna and burnt umber) over Aermaster acrylics. Darkens the area around the panel line and gives that "grimy" look!

thanks and cheers

Interesting.

That wash would look sensational on a North African GB Emil (nudge nudgeWink [;)]Wink [;)])

Hobbycraft eh?

Have never even seen one of their kits before.

Does the E look like a fall together item?
There's so much swapping of molds in this hobby, it's near impossible to tell who has what.

They need more work than the Tamigawa Emils but they do build up well. Hobbycraft offer up virtually the whole line of Me109's from B - K. I am building a Ha1112 Buchon (Bf109E with a RR Merlin - CASA built by spain) as a Civilschmitt BoB movie bird. There are even decals in the kit for the BoB movie!

I would still stick with a Tamigawa offering but the HC kit is a good fall back choice!

cheers

yeah I've heard their kits have really improved with time... I have a 1/24 Spit MkV in the build line... really interested in it as it comes with some resin and PE in the box...

I have a hobbycraft 109 G series i think it goes from G1 to G14 with the extra larger wooden tail and Galland hood, it's certainly not as good as the Has offering but it should build up OK......
As far as Emils goes i'll be building the Tamiya E 4/7 trop as an E3, this kit also gives you the markings for Black 8 JG 27 in North African markings, which IMHO is a must have, the only thing thats stopping me are those green spots"THEY WORRY ME"

Tweets i'll photocopy what i have and send em to you through the post, i'm not sure if it will be of much use, the B/W pic of the turret is blocked by the gunner, one thing that i did notice is if the gunner had to bail out he would have to turn his guns to full lock to get out of the back, almost impossible if the A/C was going down.....
Those Defiants were like the Stukas "LIVE BAIT"

Speaking of live bait, I just looked at the front page and I seem to be the only one still doing a bomber (or a twin engine for that matter). He's going to be awfully lonely up there with all those fighters buzzing around. Hopefully some of those still sitting on the fence will consider joining the bomber fleet.

I recieved my Hasegawa He 111 last week along with the hot off the press Eduard PE set. Looks like a good challenge and can hardly wait.
