fiasco... One of my favorite quotes is "build what you like, like what you build" I myself have only recently started trying to detail my models and have been for along time an OOB builder. If the kit was a POS the my build reflected that. So far Ive only done things like use fishing line for antennas, scratch building some antennas and using a bent needle to replace an ejection handle. All these little things while being little made a big difference in my opinion how the model looked and boosted my confidence as a modeler. Im not one of the modelers who think companies are making things too easy for us and still pray for shake and bake kits when I buy them but if you can see obvious room for improvement, have the talent to do it Id say go for it. You feel better about the build in the end and the thus "like what you build"

I made the mistake of visiting the IPMS Nationals in Telford UK, today. I visited the Airfix stall and saw what they had done to the Hawk, straight from the box. It was okay, but only that. I then saw one someone had built with the Neomega resin cockpit set...outstanding.
I decided that I would invest in the resin, my thinking being that I can enjoy spending the time on the painting and getting the outside of the kit looking right.
So there it is I've bought the resin...out with the razor saw and on with the build.
Thanks guys!

Kevin and fiasco...is there a resin seat available for the Golden Hawk Sabre? I admittedly don't know much about the Sabre, I knew there was a photo etch set, which I've considered, but is there a "cockpit set" or is there just a seat?

Thanks guys...many thanks!

JH

PS I actually think I'm going to build my Golden Hawk first...

Excuse me for butting in but Duncan's F-86 website is a great resource. Try the Sabre modeling section.

Thanks Domi,

I don't have any decals for those guys. I guess I won't get any kits built after all. I was thinking of getting Max Decals for the Fouga and doing the Irish Swallows though. Thanks for calming me downBig Smile [:D]

Well, I do have six 1/72 Fougas and one 1/4 Fouga. Maybe I was a bit hasty. Anybody out there know of where I can find decals for the Belgium Red Devil Team?

I'm pretty sure Daco decals have some...

In fact, no, they haven't.. Only one sheet for a Fouga, that of an anniversary scheme, but it's sold out anyway.. Plenty of scope for special schemes in their range though:

Lou,

I have the Koster Aero Enterprise's Fouga which is a 1/48 vacuform kit. Fonderie Miniatures makes two 1/48 Fouga injection plastic kits and Heller made a 1/50 kit. I am not a critic but things I have read on Fonderie Miniatures kits make them out to be difficult to assemble. I have tried to get the Heller kit on eBay but have not had much luck. Here's a review link to cut and paste to your browser:

The Fouga is a favorite of mine as you can probably tell. I usually don't let a review stop me from getting a kit of a favorite airplane. Every now and then I run it through my favorite search engine and see what pops up. I love this GB stuff Big Smile [:D]

Hey DJ,

I got the decals in the post today....Sad [:(]
It looks like the mailman dunked em in the canal before putting them in my mail box...
Im drying em out now but I dont think they'll be salvagable. I've never tried to use decals that have gotten wet already before. Its a shame, these ones are much better than the kit supplied ones
I really appreciate you sending em but its looks like its gonna be for naught.

Wow! That's a pain! I've used decals that have been soaked before without too much troubles, so you may still want to give it a go.. The carrier paper becomes a bit stiffer and the decals appear to have suffered, but once in the water for the second time, they usually bhave properly...

Relevant to the Build Topic:

Blue Angels Pilot Safe After Crash

PENSACOLA, Fla. (AP) - A Blue Angels pilot safely ejected before his jet crashed into the Gulf of Mexico during a training flight Wednesday, a spokesman for the Navy precision flying team said.

The F/A-18 Hornet went down about a mile off Perdido Key, a barrier island on the Florida-Alabama border, and 10 miles from Pensacola Naval Air Station, where the Blue Angels are headquartered.

A rescue team pulled the pilot from the 62-degree water about 10 minutes after the crash. His identity was being withheld pending notification of his family, Blue Angels spokesman Lt. Garrett Kasper said. He was released from the hospital after several hours of observation.

The cause of the crash was under investigation.

``We know he had experienced some mechanical difficulties with the aircraft that made it unable for him to return to Pensacola Naval Air Station and he was forced to out-of-control eject over the Gulf,'' Kasper said.

Recovery efforts for the $18 million jet were expected to begin Thursday.

``We saw him lose power, and he slowly coasted down,'' Paul Gordon, a Montgomery, Ala., roofer told WPMI-TV in Mobile, Ala.

The last crash involving a Blue Angels jet ended in the deaths of two pilots in October 1999.

Hey Chris,

As much as I love your signature pic, is there any way you can shrink it?
I dont care so much because I have HighSpeed internet but the guys here that use dial up connections have a hard time with big pics. Its not a big deal just polite to the other guys here in the forum.

BTW, how long have you been working with 135's? I may have a bunch of questions for you.

My apologies,

I love the USAF website. It has some great pictures. I just got a little carried away. I am retired after 22 years service in the USAF of which 18 years were aircraft maintenance and 9 years on the KC-135Q/R. I have plenty of info on the 135 so ask away.

eek... I didnt meen get rid of complete.

One the things Im trying to do is build a model of all the aircraft stationed at bases where I lived with my father. One of those bases was RAF Fairford from 86 to 90. Im not sure how familiar you are with this but all the research I've done says 135's at Fairford were there on Temporary duty from stateside bases? So they wouldn't have any marking specific to Fairford? Something about that just doesn't seem to right to me. For some reason I want to say that all the 135's there were R or Q models (able to refuel SR-71's if that makes a difference) and that they stationed there. 11th SRW or 10th SRW rings bells and 7020thABG Anything you could do to enlighten me would be apprectiated.

Oops... Back to the topic at hand. Any one know where I can find some pics of Red Arrows Pilots? Im guessing they dont where the standard olive drab flight suit and Im thinking about raiding another kits pilots and add them to this to cover up some of the spares cockpit details.

The arrows wear standard olive drab flight suits up until the point where the team get the go ahead each year for display flying. They then get to wear the famous red suits.

Aidan,

I wish I would have thought of it when you said you were going to build the Premiere Hawk kit. I would have told you why bother when Airfix has released a 1/48 Red Arrow Hawk kit that's reported to be much better. Check this link:

http://www.modelingmadness.com/scotts/mod/gb/48hawkpreview.htm

I have the Premiere kit too because it was all there was at the time but my kit is not the Red Arrow version or I would send you the decals. Just something to consider and I wish I would have thought about it sooner. Sorry.

Thanks guys,
Chris, Ive had both versions of the Hawk in my stash for awhile now. Im sad to say that Im guilty of judging a model by its box. The grey hawk on the other box looks awsome and since it came with the Red Arrows version as well ( I bought both off ebay) I was hooked. This build gave me the excuse I needed to dig one out and have a go. I had read a couple reviews, none too appealing, and even from my own assessment in the box I knew I was in for a challange. Ive just never encountered problems with decals like this before. Though admittedly until recently I had never used AMT, or Premier kits either. Im thinking from now on if the kits not Hasagawa, Tamiya, or Monogram Im going with AM decals. The ones DJ sent me would have been great but the mailman kinda screwed that one for me (theres a voodoo doll in my hobby room waiting for me to find out the mans name so I can start stuffing pins in it....)

Bad news guys. Im getting bad news on the Homefront and maybe returning stateside unexpectedly. So this build may take ALOT longer than anticipated. Im waiting on a Red Cross message right now and I when I jump I'll probably be gone for about a month. DJ, this also means I wont be here when you make it out to the Leige area. I was really looking forward to meeting you :(
