I'm still painting up the Neomega Resin cockpit and seats, its taken me ages to find references. Whilst I'm waiting for paint to dry I'm dry-fitting the fuselage wings etc. I put the wings together with masking tape. The wing trailing edges are 1mm thick on the kit which equates to 48mm in reality. Far too thick. I thought about using the dropped flap option but this lacks detail and would mean a fair bit of scratchbuilding.
I'm trying to maintain a bit of momentum to get the build finished so I'm going to leave it on this one.

Well, I finally got started on my Blue Angels Hornet. I will post some pics after I finish the cockpit, and get main fuesalage assembled. I have some comments about the 1/72 Hasegawa kit, but I'll reserve those until the first "official" post.

Later all,

Here's my 2 cents on the Hawk ejection My 2 cents [2c]. Looking through my World Air Power journal it lists the Martin-Baker Mk 10D as the seat in the Red Arrows Hawk T.Mk 1 and the MB Mk 10B seat in the T.Mk 1A Hawk. Martin-Baker's UK website show a picture of the Mk 10L. Thanks for the websites, Domi. I added them to my favorites.

As for my Koster vac kit of the Fouga, it is kicking my butt Banged Head [banghead]. All the sanding and filing. Anybody on this GB build a vac kit? I finally have a digital camera so when I secure a place to post them I will be happy to share my pain Angry [:(!].

Got my Hawk tub almost finished. I've not fixed the seats nor added the control columns as these could get damaged when I start masking (I use damp tissue to fill the cockpit area prior to painting).
Pics aren't up to much but I guess you 'll get the idea!
I used art pencils on the rear instrument panel as recommended on another thread, I'm quite pleased so thanks folks for the tip!

Wow, fiasco, that's a great looking tub. What did you use for belt material and buckles/rings, etc. on the belts. Were they PE or did you craft those? They look really nice...the belts really bring your eyes in.

Nice stuff, looking forward to more.

Thanks for the feedback folks. The whole tub is the Neomega resin set.
http://www.neomega-resin.com
The seatbelts are beautifully moulded. All I had to do was paint them!

The drawback was that the tub alone cost twice as much as the kit. The other point is that I've got to show the canopy open now otherwise the detail will be hidden behind plastic!
(BTW I'm rehosting all my pics later today so if you get a red cross bear with me)

Spending a bit of time at the moment, sanding the air intakes. They were a poor fit and the profile is slightly out where it joins the fuselage.
I tried a tip I'd read for checking where I've sanded. I painted a little silver paint around the joint. It really shows up any imperfections. I used a Tamiya silver paint marker.

I've painted the landing gear and wheel wells ready for fitting when the fuselage has been painted.

Thinking ahead to the painting of the aircraft, I'm considering two options:-
1) Paint the whole aircraft red and use the decals for the white markings
2) Paint the aircraft white, then red using the decals as masks.
Anyone tried the latter?

Argggh. Ever have one of those days? After masking and painting and removing most of the masking, I realized that the blue color I mixed is too dark, way too dark, and I will have to redo the masking and painting. And I had thought I was into the home stretch with this one.

I've not built the revell kit, but I built a 1/72 Airfix one about five years ago. It was one of my first kits on returning to modelling.
I love the subject. The hawk is so asthetically pleasing. I noticed the other day that my local supermarket (Tesco) were selling a box set of three airfix 1/72 arrows for less than £7.00 ($14.00). I was really tempted to buy that and the xtradecal sheet and build three different hawk schemes. I really like the camoflagued hawks from RAF Brawdy in the 1980's.

Here's an update to my combined Aerobatic Team/Foreign Mig GB of the Chinese F7 (Modified Mig21). Closed up the cockpit, scratched built the armor glass, lots of filler and sanding, followed by a primer, a white coat, masking, and the 3 tone color scheme completed. Next up will be the gloss coat, a wash, and decals - including a few home made ones.

I got some inkjet decal paper from Micromark, but I've seen them elsewhere. I downloaded the teams' emblem off the net and will reduce & print it out. The paper comes in clear or white (since printers don't print white). They have a fixative spray, which is really just Krylon clear lacquer, to put on the paper. Then you trim out the decal.

frosty

frosty,
I went to the supermarket today for the weekly groceries. Those airfix kits are actually 2 not 3 kits per set, BUT they've reduced them to £3.50 ($7.00) so I couldn't resist! The temptation now is to go and by another 4 sets and model the entire team.
People are catching on fast to this offer if the number that have appeared on ebay today is anything to go by.

Waikong, that Mig is looking great :) Amazing job on the masked markings.

Fiasco, I hope you got my email

I started back to work on My Red Arrow. I decided to try and scratch build a cockpit. Its no where near accurate and I didnt even attempt to make it so. But just the little I did is, IMO, much better than the POS decals the kit came with. Im not sure how fast Im going to make progress on this as I just dont have the motivation right now. But getting started again I guess is the first the first step... Ill post pics when I get alittle further along

Aidan, got your email thanks.
I sometimes wonder where manufacturers get their references from. The Neomega cockpit I've used doesn't match the photos I've seen of the hawk cockpit. Some of the instruments are in the wrong places.
What matters to me is that it appears right when fitted. It all depends on what lengths you are prepared to go to I suppose.

The fuselage halves are together now on my hawk. The resin tub was a tight fit and I had to trim away some of the molded sidewall detail from the kit parts.
I'm sanding and filling at the moment, trying to get the nose smooth without getting a flat spot.
I really rate the "paint it silver to show the flaws" method that I've adopted. I fill and sand to get a smooth finish to the eye then run a tamiya silver marker over the join and voila any imperfections show up.

Groups' gone a bit quiet in the last week. I'm still sanding (sounds like a song?), but it wont be long now before I get some paint on. I've attached the wings, but the fit is awful around the front of the wing roots. Trouble is the filler is in some hard to reach positions which has meant making some tapered sanding sticks from wooden drink stirrers, wrapped in carpet tape (really strong double sided adhesive tape) then wet and dry attached. Works quite well so far.

Looks like I"m gonna be first in this GB. Here's the result of my combined Foreign Mig/Acrobatic Team GB. A Chinese modified Mig21 (F-7E). Its the PLAAF August 1st demonstration team.
