Col. Joe: Welcome aboard!! the second set that Darson posted should still be available... the set from the Shokaku. I got one less than a yr ago from www.greatmodels.com go there and do a search for: eg48109 it will bring them up. They are about $8.00 and are worth it! (I will look for mine, if I find them I will email you. I would be happy to send them to you)

www.squadron.com has them too: here's the link:

http://www.squadron.com/ItemDetails.asp?item=EP48109 about $8.00 there too.

The thing with greatmodels is they wont ship it to you if the order has not reched a $10 minimum. So squadron would be the way to go here... they ship no matter HOW much you order!!!

Good luck! I will try to post back tonight and tell you if I found the remnants of my set... interestingly enough the sub that is credited with the assisted kill on the Shokaku is right down the street from me.... www.cavalla.org

Colonel (too many Joe's around here) Model Master Enamels are my preferred weapon of choice for painting, but they have a limited range of IJN colors. For this build I am going to be following Jules and go with Gunze colors.

Thad I think Jules is right in that they were P-40Bs, I'll see if I can find out any info in my references when I get home.

Tom You are a never ending source of decals my friend Smile [:)].
Also, I thought that Squadron had a $10 minimum order as well as GMW?

Cheers

Darren: it seems the few decal sets I have are the ones people need! (seriously) As for squadron.com, I've ordered less than $10 and they shipped it... maybe it's only for the overseas orders???

Colonel - you also might want to check out www.j-aircraft.com. I ended up custom mixing the paint for my Midway GB Zero. They are a definitive resource for Japanese planes and paint colors!

thad to be honest the two planes you speak of have been very tough for me to find. my head tells me that they were b's but c's were also readily available. i just dont know which a/c got aloft. most pilots would fly a plane till no more amunition and then switch. the pilots that got in the air used both p-40 and p-36 durring the attack. i wish i had a concrete answer but i dont.

i do have some info on a/c from the attack both b's and c's. most were grounded though.

Tom,

Thanks for the welcome and the info! Glad to find these at Squadron. I went to Squadron and did a search and these never came up! I must've been doing something wrong Smile [:)]

Well, I just ordered both sets. I agree these will be great to have for future builds.

Aurora,

Thanks for the tip on the White Ensign Colourcraft paints... after checking them out what I like about them is they will sell you the colors as a national set. The only downside is I can only seem to find them in the UK - not sold in the states as far as I can tell.

How long did you have to wait for delivery? I've heard quite a bit about Gunze, but in looking at their list I'm not sure which colors I'd need to buy.

Once I get the colors I need I think, for this model, I'll go with Gunze.

This group has been wonderful, and as the "new guy" I really appreciate all of the help provided.

Colonel the paint that i have for the zero that i'm doing for the Midway GB is Gunze H 61 IJN grey, the paint is a little on the darkside of things so adding 10% white will give you the correct colourThumbs Up [tup]

Not as long as I thought it would take. Less than 10 days. I payed by credit card.

Yes it is. Sorry that it isn't the best quality but I figured it would do until I can get my scanner fixed.

oh it's all fine and dandy... bump bump bump... UNTIL SOMEONE GETS THEIR EYE PUT OUT!!!!

(Well what if they came at you with a pointed stick) --- MP

I am anxiously awaiting the arrival of the start date so I can build my NMF P-26.... if I had the money it would be one of those 1/32 Zero's Tamiya makes.,.. but (US) $400.00 is a bit much for a model.

Anybody on this build actually built the Hase Kate before? If so can you let me know your thoughts on whether the cockpit needs a lot of detailing or is it ok as is?

Sorry but $300US ($394AUD) for a model is just insane IMHO. You have to wonder just how many of these kits Tamiya has moved, even in Japan?

Roll on Aug 7!!!

Seems like most of the posts I've seen lately have built it pretty much oob and the detail looks good. I did get the edouard PE set for this kit however, mainly b/c I wanted to push myself and learn a little about using aftermarket stuff.

Darren sorry mate can't help you with that one, i'm waiting to see how yours comes out before i take the plunge into a Kate............

Tom, Mate thats just insane paying that much for a model even the Flower class corvette that i'm buying with all it's AM bits only comes to about $350:00 with another $150:00 AU for the U-Boat and PE...........

I agree! I'd say somewhere around $150 US for a kit is my upper limit unless it were something VERY special. (Or very large, such as a 1/16 bust of Kremps)

Darren - I think someone just did that Kate in the aircraft section and it looked pretty much OOB. If it is what I am thinking of it looked good as it was!

Hmmm a 1/16 bust of Kremps, well that would have to be worth at least $700:00 / $800:00 US wouldn't itQuestion [?]

Well, I got my Eagle Strike decals for the Kaga and the Shokaku aircraft from Squadron today, and they look good. One question to is they are now showing the main body color of the planes as "Ame-Hiro". This is described on an enclosed slip of paper as a kind of a "cardboard" color and could be replicated by a lightened or faded RLM 02 or a mix in the F.S. 33510/36415 range.

Anyone see this before? What would you suggest for proper colors?

Jules,

I saw your many references to "Kremp" at the 1944 GB discussion, I'm almost afraid to ask Smile [:)]..... what/who is that about?

Colonel you shouldn't have gone there, she is basically a 300pound East German ex wrestler who is now head nurse at Happy Acres mental rest facility.......
For more info on the Kremp ask Tom, he seems to be the closest to herThumbs Up [tup]

Now you've done it Joe, now you've really done it, you went and mentioned the "K" word.

Jules is right Tom is the man to ask, he and Kremps are "special friends"

Colonel - here is an exhaustive article from j-aircraft.com ove rwhat color exactly the aircraft were at a particular time period.

Section 1.3 deals with the coolor you are looking for. Go back to the main research page where they have a link to colors and cano schmes and they compare different brands against what the paint chips look like or probably looked like.

Oh!!! I almost forgot to add this Colonel - Madame (Nurse to most) Kremps is a lithe, svelte, ex wrestler from the eastern bloc. She carries her 300 pounds on a sprightly 6 foot 3 frame as daintily as could be. Able to crack billiard balls between her legs, then gently care for the mentally challenged at Happy Acres Rest facility, she is a legend to us all.

Recently she was let go from Happy Acres for (allegedly) pilfering out of Sean (Tweety's) bingo night holdings. We rallied together and got her to come back from Tibet where she was learning to wrestle water buffalo. She now hangs out mostly at the corner bar picking fights with the merchant marines in port and occasionally we call on her to settle some dispute of modeling technique or plane markings for us.

In the North Africa GB I am currently building her mount, a Martlet Mk.IV "Black K" from her days spent in Egypt. Tanky is contemplating building a 1/16 bust of her representing her at her finest, during her days in the K-9 unit on the eastern front. She had to be let go from there too as she kept biting the other dogs and wouldn't sniff out an escapee from the prison camp when asked.

Anyway stick around and you too will be a welcome inmate guest at Happy Acres! She has been through 5 group builds with us and has proven to be a worthy ally!
