Joe, go ahead and put me down for a Monogram P-40B. If I can find decals for it, I've got the 1/72 Monogram P-36 that could also be done for this, but let me see about the decals first.

I may just yet do the NMF P-26, I'll decide when I get some more references together... it would look striking as that in 1/32...

Jules as far as I know, both Academy and Hobbycraft make a 1/48 P-26

Jules - if you decide to do one, several reviews I ran across in research listed the HobbyCraft kit as the better of the two... (even better than my 1/32 Hasa kit)

Jules - I imagine the would be in fairly clean shape with normal wear (exhaust stains etc) ... America was preparing for an attack, we just didn't know where. I remember in the Navy even for ops the crew chiefs would be up all night checking and checking everything on the aircraft until 0-dark-thirty. Everything was clean, oiled and ready to go way in advance...

fightnjoe,

I'd like to get into this GB with a 1/48th Hasegawa D3A1 Val (Kit No. Jt172). I'm just coming back to modeling after maaaany years. I've started back up with my 12 yr old son who is currently building an Italeri Elefant, and I'm finishing up an SBD3. We're having a blast together.

I assume by an August 7 start we cannot begin modeling till then? (Please excuse the new guy..)

Could someone point me in the right direction for paint and decals? I'm sure there is someone else with a Val in mind, and I wouldn't mind complimenting whatever they wanted to build to avoid duplication.

Looking forward to this....

Sorry to say all I could manage was a photo of the page on the P-26. My scanner is still on strike and this will have to do until then:

Sign - Welcome [#welcome] to the forum and the group build, nice to have you along.

I've had a quick look for some Val decals and drawn a big zip I'm afraid. I'm not familiar with the Hase kit jt172, if you can get kit #09055 it comes with Pearl Harbor markings. As for paint, check out our local hobby shop (LHS) and ask what they have, Gunze seem to make a good range of IJN colors if they are available to you.

Cheers

Thanks for the nice welcome folks!

I've found some profile artwork of Vals from 4 carriers, and some coloring direction, but it looks like I could be in for a tough time on the decal side of things. I'm continuing the search... Eagle Strike had a Pearl Harbor series, but it looks like it's out of print.

I'm reading where some make print their own... I'm pretty good with Photoshop, but what has been people's experience with printing their own decals?

Hey Joe do you know what kind of birds the two U.S. airman flew in the attack. I beleive one of their names was Taylor (not for sure ) but they were credited for 6 or 7 kills that day. If so are there any photos of the planes??

Colonel Joe, welcome to the forums! Making your own decals can be good. I just did that for my BoB Hurricane as I couldn't find any Canadian Sqdn Codes, I used the Testors clear and white decal paper. Both worked decently (I have an HP PSC 1315 all-in-one) but images that have lots of colours can be tricky. The best is single colour decals, like aircraft codes. And make sure you put on a sealer! or else as soon as you put it into water the colours will run.

fightnjoe, I still haven't got my kit yet but I my birthday is in July so I'm dropping really big hints with the wife!Wink [;)]Smile [:)]

Joe (Colonel_Joe) I've had a bit more of a look for those Val decals, have a look at

http://www.justplanehobbies.com/desc.ydev?prod_id=2151

http://www.justplanehobbies.com/desc.ydev?prod_id=2150

I don't know if they are actually carrying stock, but it won't hurt to ask.

darson,

Thanks for the heads up, and the research!

I'm going to check and see if they still have them in stock. As far as I can tell both of these are out of print so they'd be great to have. These decals are from sets 3 and 4 which detail the Shokaku and Kaga, sets 1 and 2 cover the Hiryu, Akagi, and Zuikaku. Eventually, I'd like to have them all. Cool [8D]

Although this is my first GB, I'm actually enjoying the wait time to get the planning completed and things like paints, decals etc all lined up. Plus get my newbie questions answered. Smile [:)]

What's the paints of choice for Japanese aircraft? My LHS only stock Modelmaster, Polly S and Tamiya.. no Gunze (but I suppose I could mail order it.).

Colonel Joe I use a mix of those paints all the time. It is just personal preference to what a modeler wants to use.

Colonel Joe,

White Ensign Models (A UK company) sells many varities of IJN and IJA colors. Even the "pale green'" Pearl Harbor Zero color. I've bought several of the paints from their website.

Thad from memory i think those two airmen were flying P-40's........

Colonel i use Gunze almost exclusivly because my LHS has a large range of Gunze paints, but pollyscale is a fantastic paint to use so that would be my choice.....
BTW if you do go for pollyscale don't mix the paints with any other brands, i tried to lighten the polly earth brown with gunze white and it just doesn't mix.........
