Hi Mathew, Good luck on your Kate. I'm building the one with the torpedo, for once I got lucky and found it at my LHS. Mine is going to be straight from the box except for two things, a Tamiya tape seat belt and the wooden attachment to the torpedo tail to allow it to work in shallow waters. Oh and between you and me, I'm looking forward to this build as well.

Jules yeah you're right with the paints, I normally use MM enamels, but their range is really limited when it comes to the IJN, so it's either Tamiya or Gunze.

Joe, I don't have to worry to much about temptation at the moment because I have so many other builds going, I just don't have any time to start the Kate even if I wanted too.

Anybody can someone who knows tell me just how worn out (or brand new for that matter) was the finish on the Kate's used at Pearl Harbour?

Cheers

something i really want to stress. for those who havent gotten their kits or decided on their subject, with only four months to go you may wish to give serious thought to what you want to do. i say this because as we all know when you wait sometimes you lose out on what you want. i dont want to see anyone be stuck with something because their first choice was unavailable.

Darson, check out this link. I've posted it here before but it's a good one.

Looks pretty worn, but I guess you could do whatever you wanted.
Hope everyone's doing well.

Joe,

I have registered on your Pearl Harbor Forum but I wanted to get it here also. I will be building Trumpeter's 1/32 P40-B. I have the kit and it is a beauty. I am sure looking forward to getting into this one.

I found the story of the 18 SBD's from the Enterprise on the net, If the Enterprise was at Pearl Harbour on the 7th then there must have been Wildcats on her decks and in her hangars rightQuestion [?]

According to Bruce Gamble in The Black Sheep Squadron, ten of VMF-211's fighters were left behind at Ewa when half of the squadron was deployed to Wake Island. They had both F4F's and F3F's assigned but he doesn't say if any, or all, of the 10 were Wildcats. In any event, none of the VMF-211 planes got off the ground on Dec. 7 and all but 1were destroyed.

Joe i have a profile of a Wildcat here, it's Black F-14 from VF-6 USS Enterprise but it's dated at Jan 1942, it still carries the red center in the national marking and the red/white rudder, would this qualify for the buildQuestion [?]

the squadron was scout six. sbd-2's.

these are the numbers.

6-s-2 6-s-5 6-s-11

6-s-1 6-s-7 6-s-10

6-s-3 6-s-8 6-s-16

6-s-4 6-b-5 6-s-15

6-b-9 6-b-3 6-b-12

6-s-14

i hate being so picky about it but these planes to me were the only ones that actually took part in the attack. mostly defensive, but they did participate. if you would like it i have a report from one member of that squadron.

OK so it's just a case of picking a code, maybe 6-S-14, but would it be the same colour scheme of blue over white with the red/white rudder......BTW the report would be good mate, is there any profiles or pics of the particular WildcatsQuestion [?]

Jules - here's the info on the fighter sqn from the Enterprise, it's toward the bottom of the page... all in all I think it worth your while to hit home on the page and read it from the start... it gives a pretty much on the ground look at what was happening... not sure it lists the sqn or plane number though but I think you found that... they were on their way to attack Nagumos fleet, the bombers and torpedo planes were ordered back to the Enterprise but the fighter squadron was ordered back to Pearl to help in defense of the island.

The story is just to the left of the little guy on the scooter bike:

http://www.nps.gov/wapa/indepth/extContent/usmc/pcn-190-003116-00/sec4a.htm

I am getting enough things cleared away I might join this one.. gotta go to ebay and see if I can pick up an OS2U.

oh yeah - Jules - I also recommend the Ultracast seat for the Wildcat. They have it in stock at www.rollmodels.com for about $5 US. (set of two)

It REALLY brightens the cockpit! I haven't got mine yet but if I dont fudge up one of them I might be able to spare the other one...

Darren - in response to your question on how worn the aircraft (I think you said Kate) were the morning of the attack here is a pic of a Kate for you from the actual attack. top row, middle column. As I suspected they were immaculate, I also saw a pic of a Zero somewhere else immaculately painted.

http://education.eastwestcenter.org/asiapacificed/ph2004/NPSphotos.htm

I imagine they really got the pride of the entire fleet put into their aircraft on a monumental day like that... The Japanese pride in their heritage and warrior code was very extreme.

tom you are correct. the japanese planes to my knowledge were very lightly weathered. the zeros were new and all others were top of the line.

Joe - I would like to join but all that hinges on me getting a OS2U at a reasonable price. Maybe I will build a Wildcat if I can't find one, but I don't know... I am more into the fringe builds on the GB's and don't like to build what someone else is building.

the link I provided earlier gives a lot of aircraft listings so I may look through it for something out of the ordinary...
