Dave I feel like a complete plonker but I never thought to use those masks as templates for Tamiya tape, thanks for the tip.

Frosty nice looking work on your 109 and Rick's right we all have rough spots and as long as your having fun and trying something new, go for it Thumbs Up [tup]

Rick I have no idea how you manage it but congrats on 8000 posts Bow [bow]

Jules I remember my first ab was a Badger 250 that was about $20 as well. I agree you don't need to spend mega bucks to get a reasonable results.

Karl, Yeah mate they are the Eduard EZ masks Sad [:(]

What i'll do is use them on the flat surfaces of the canopy and cut new ones out of tamiya tape using the mask as a template for the curved surface of the canopy Thumbs Up [tup]

progress update:
here r the latest round of pix of the trop:

italeri's 1/72 bf-109f2/4 kit, being built as Red 4, JG 27 North Africa 1942

scratchbuilt DB601E engine

engine detail painted, scratchbuilt engine mount added

as Tankmaster & Jules have pointed out, this build has a few
rough spots 2 it., not the kit's fault but entirely of my own making Dead [xx(]

i will finish it up as best i can & try 2 do better
next time....

Jules It's not too bad, though it would help if the Aeromaster painting guide views actually matched. As it is the starboard side view camo does not match the camo shown in the top view. It's fine for the port side!?!?!?!? I guess they're not referred to as Errormaster for nothing.

The new Badger 100 makes the free handing a lot easier, especially as it's an SG with internal colour cup, and a fine head.

Are those the Eduard EZ masks? Assuming they are, they're a pain in the backside. Great on flat surfaces, useless on any sort of curved surface, where they lift very quickly.

Thats looks like a pretty challenging camo scheme to do freehand...........
BTW i have some EZ masks here that i havn't used before, they look pretty thick and i'm wondering if anyone has any feedback on them...........

Dave Bad luck with the wash, that's gotta hurt.

Jules I used the new Eduard masks on the BoBGB Hurricane, and they are a huge improvement over the old ones. They look like they're made of Tamiya tape, though Eduard calls it Kabuki tape.

There are still a lot of the old masks around, so ordering from Eduard is probably a very wise idea.

I am no expert Jules but I hear it is common practise for people to use the eduard mask as a template to cut a mask out of the Tamiya tape. I also seem to remember reading something about Eduard switching their brand of tape recently in one of their newsletters (March of this year I believe).

Progress report, I was just putting the finishing touches on the weathering for my P-51 and wouldn't you know it I screwed it up big time. I was trying to blend in the exhaust stains but this time I was using an enamel wash which I have used before, but I got the wash on too heavy and when I tried to thin it out I scrubed too hard and took the paint off the fuselage. Banged Head [banghead]

Sometimes you should just leave things alone!

Karl-thanks for the info.

I ended up striping the paint off completely-really need to get the OD to match what is on the plane. This is the last major task on this project aside from some pastel chalk for the exhaust. Four day weekend next weekend so I might get it finished then.

Bob I had exactly the same problem with the Eduard masks on my 109D.

I ended up scraping the paint off with a toothpick, then applying a coat of Future to the affected areas.

You really can't notice any difference now.

Progress Update

The MS406 has received a coat of French grey blue to the appropriate areas. I had pre-shaded, but the colours on this build are too dark to work that well with this technique, so it'll be a case of post shading once the decals are done.

The first lot of French green I put on was way too dark, so I ended up using the alternative FS number. Luckily I had a pot of the right colour in stock. Cool [8D]

I'm now part way through applying this, and will probably get the brown on next weekend.

I'll try and post some pics tomorrow.

Thanks Tom-will definatly give 're-Futureing' a try. Canopy is off the plane. Will try mixing up some paint and repainting. Worst case is I can strip the paint and start over.

Bob - try futuring it again... if you've already removed the mask use a med or smallish brush and brush it on the panes... it should remove the fogging.otherwise go ahead and dullcoat, remove the mask and do the paint brush thing to keep from shining up the framing.

I did the hand painting thing recently on a Zero, using a 10/0 brush I was able to stay inside the lines, and even if I didn't quite cover a spot the color was changed enough as to be almost identical to the fuselage...

Nice work Frosty-especially in 1/72nd!

First the good news-the Eduard mask arrived for the F-6A.

Now the bad news-the adhesive quality of the mask leaves a lot to be desired. Secondly, there is no mask for the small framing on the left front section-kind of a sideways "U". Third, the mix of paint didn't match the orginial OD that was sprayed on the plane. Lastly, there is some fogging on the left side of the canopy. Sigh.

Trying to decide whether to just mix-up some new paint and grab a very narrow brush and make the corrections while the canopy is attached (and forget about the fogging) or remove the entire lot, soak it in Castrol SuperClean (or whatever it is) and start over.

Thought about the mask-I'm thinking of making a copy of the mask outline (where I removed the orginial bits) and scanning/coping that to an adhesive mailing label, then cutting that out for future P-51A projects (and maybe this one). Any thoughts-pro/con?

Btw-I Futured the canopy-haven't had the fogging issue before>

Well, I've got the base colour on the 129. Had to do some touch up work thanks to overspray, but personally I think my attempt at RLM 79 looks pretty damn close Big Smile [:D]

I just finished applying the Future, so in a couple of days I'll give the squiggle camo a try.
Kinda spewing my Iwata hasn't shown up, but it probably wont get here till November at a guess, so gonna have to try the squiggle with the Omni.

But to do that I'll also need to wrap a small hand towel around it to give the ab body some bulk, otherwise I'll have hand cramp at the most inappropriate moment Shy [8)]
