Checkmate598,

Sorry I missed your reply...didn't see it. The "brembo" decals sound like a good idea, I'll look into it.

Joel,

I tried stripping the paint and repainting the recessed lettering...I made it worse! lol!

No problem, this is my first model in at least, 10 years.

I'll buy a new one to use the calipers and practice techniques on other parts, the best thing about this whole deal is how much I've learned in the process, I'm hooked and I can't wait to build more.

How can I post pictures of my little project?

Thanks everybody for your input, I've learned a lot!

Heck no, I'm too stuck in this line of modeling to quit now. I've got 30+ bike kits laying around staring at me to get finished.

I am surprised about the decal quality as well, they were actualy fragile like older Museum Collection decals and didn't stand some preassure from a damp towel wich is usually my way of dealing with tricky decals. Cracked and lost flakes all over. Turned out OK though and I think I could have put the checkered pieces in place in a different order.

Over and out.

Hi Joel

Nice work. I am surprised you had such trouble with the decals, normally one cannot fault the Tamiya / Cartograph sets.  I hope by you saying this is your last bike in this build that you mean we will not see your work again! I love your attention to  detail.

So, I finally finished my last build in this GB (the fifth...) This is the ride of the late Dajiro Kato who died in an accident in the early races of the 2003 moto GP season.

Pretty straight forward although I've added a few details here and there, on the rear side of the front wheel and on the right side foot peg panels, to be exact.

Paint and decal job was aweful, I stripped the paint ones as it became too dark. I resprayed mist coats over a silver base and it turned out much better.
Decals was really tricky and they cracked all over. I had an extra sheet that I used to fix the major gaps but it is clearly visible at the tank dummy/side cowling intersect.

Winter is comming and the lighting was really bad today, sorry for the image quality. I also noticed I'd forgot to paint the inside of the mufflers. Will take care of that ASAP.

Enjoy,
best regards
Joel

haha, last picture is crazy!

Bike looks really good. You've done a great job mastering the yellow paint job wich can be troublesome. I love the Camel liveries and therefor I love this build!

Bushpig: That is great news! I knew there was a 05 RCV comming but I didn't know what colors. No chock it was the repsol one...

About stripping chrome, take a oven safe plate and put your parts on that. Then cover the parts in oven cleaner. Wash them thorroughly afterwards. Maybe you'll have to put another coat of oven cleaner on to remove all plating.

best regards

This may be old news but I see tamiya are releasing a Pedrosa / Hayden 2006 RC211V, HLJ say they will have stock by December.

I am still hoping someone can tell me how to strip the chrome off parts using chemicals, I am sure I saw someone mention this way back in the build. I have put the Valencia NSR 500 on hold till I can figure this out.

Shayne looks nice and I am sure you will do a great job. The mistake I made with mine was to use plainweave instead of the twill pattern CF so the effect is nice but not technically accurate one day I may strip it all down and start again!

Hi Guys. Thanks for the comments, it is this sort of encouragement that inspires everyone I am sure to keep striving to make that perfect model (has that ever been done????).

Firstly on the exhausts I have followed Andrew Collodel's method he published further back in this build (a fellow South African and I am sure you all agree he is a master!). I am not totally happy with the result but know where I went wrong so will improve as I go.

Applying the CF decalling I have actually found quite straight forward. The NSR was made much easier as Dexter included a template sheet. I start by spaying a gloss black coat then it was just a case of laying masking tape over each shape on the template, tracing the outline onto the masking tape, placing this onto a CF sheet and cutting around the outline. Application is done by first applying Microset and then Microsol to get it all to bed down, some gentle manipulation is necessary but not too much. I find the less you play around once the microsol is on the better, actually better to wait till it has dried before trying to correct any problems as sometimes you cause more damage. The beauty with applying the decal is if you get it wrong you just soften it up, remove it and start again! As I said the only real challenge with this NSR was the rear cowling, the shape is so curvy and the decal struggled in some areas but after it had set I found going in and carefully cutting the wrinkles with a scalpel and then reapplying microsol helped settle it all down. The beauty with the CF is even if you end up with a particularly bad area you can cut it out and put in a replacement bit, line it up properly and apply microsol and you can only notice it if you really look hard. I then apply a few coats of gloss varnish to smooth it all out.

Shayne I also want to do a 2005 test version, will yours be tobacco logo or GO!!!!!!! ? I have  a few reference pics if you need them and it seems Rossi rode both types at some stage.

I did an M1 test version of the 2004 bike and there used the method of masking tape applied to the part, tracing around the shape and then applying as above. I'll post some pics shortly.

Bushpig: That is one great looking bike! I'm amazed about peoples skill when it comes to CF. Would you mind writing a few lines about how you went through that process?
The exhausts look stunning, have you used the Crazy Modeller exhaust decal?

Finished the NSR test bike this weekend. A nice addition to my Rossi collection and a good decal set from Dexter. The only real challenge was getting the CF decal to conform to the rear cowling but the rest went on pretty easily. Next project will be the Rennaisance NSR Hawaii bike, looks like more of a challenge as it is a resin kit and a huge amount of decalling, will keep you posted!

I need some advice please. I read somewhere in this forum about a method for stripping the chrome off parts chemically, can someone please let me know how this is done?

Hi Guys. This is why I love this hobby, I guess only the racing teams themselves could give us the definitive answer! I have tried to enlarge the clearest photo I have, not sure if this is clear enough. I can't remember where I got the original to refer you onto, but in the full size image it is very clear there is a classic carbon fibre type pattern over these disk covers.

Checkmate. Note sure if this helps you as it is a Yammie but may be OK. Looks to me like it is made of normal carbon fibre so you would probably get away with painting gun metal (tamiya x10) or better CF decal and overspray with smoke x19.

Um, I have to respectfully disagree with old Bushpig here.  The carbon discs don't have a "woven" appearance like some other parts on these bikes.  They appear light grey, almost slate-like close up.  You can see it in some pics, and back at Cherry Point, we would rebuild brakes for AV-8B Harriers which use a material that's VERY similar.  Dark or medium grey with little metallic bits in them.  They almost looked like they were made out of compressed sheets of stone, and when picked up were a LOT lighter than you expected them to be.  I'll go on a photo hunt and see what I can't come up with.  To paint mine, I use Testor's Model Master "gunmetal".  It usually looks OK.  I've also used "graphite metallic", but that is a gloss, so you'd have to spray with dullcoat laquer, and the metal flakes look a little overdone.  Off to hunt pictures...

Hi,

I'm building a RC211V 03 right now and bought the S27 PE parts for it. What shade of paint do you use for the carbon disc cover?

any takers?

First of all, are you building a version that used the disc cover at all? It's there to keep the discs warm and is almost exclusively seen during pre season testing.
I'll try and find some ref pics.

Joel,

thanks for the encouragement!...I'll follow your advice and see what happens. These are for the 2004 M1, so the lettering is recessed. I've already "carved" one letter as it was hard to get it back to shape, I guess I'll keep trying.

Will let you know of my progress...will get back to you for help!

Thanks a lot!

Hi Joel

Thanks for the compliment. The figure itself was easy enough, the legs attach below the knee and adding the helmet is the only construction needed. I needed to clean off some flash in places and fill in some air bubble marks etc. Also needed to fill in with filler at the knee joints. For the paint I used Revell SM312 for the lumi yellow and Tamiya XF8 for the blue, over sprayed with gloss varnish. The helment had to be done half gloss black and half gloss yellow and then the decals applied, these proved to be the only challenge but not as bad as I had first feared. Decals on the body are straight forward. The visor did not look right as clear plastic so I sprayed it with tamiya clear orange which made it look so much more authentic.

50% complete with the Rossi test NSR!

First of all I have to comment on your rideer figure Bushpig. It looks so great. I have a couple of sheets lying around but never tried my luck on one. How was the figure to work with and what paint did you use for the leathers?

I took my last MotoGP GB bike out today, the Télefonica 03 that just has to be dacalled up. I've stripped it as I thought the paint was to dark. Started over with a base coat of Tamiya Silver Leaf and then just put on two thin coats of Tamiya Racing blue and it looks beautiful. I'd say almost spot on. I'll be back with pics soon.
