turned out very good Andrew-very clean build ,can't even tell if there was any fitting problems .
Did bottom cowl pose any problems ,I did Rossi bike from same race a while ago with the st27 exhausts and man had problems with that Big Smile [:D]

Looks good Andrew!  You ARE modding the "old" fairings to fit the low exhaust, aren't you?   If so, how?  Don't be like yours truly and not notice that they don't clear at the belly pan until final assembly.  Really nice job on the c/f also.

Great info and much appreciated!

Testors paints seem to be fine, they run smoothly and cover fast. Tamiya's are weird to use...they dry up quickly and then that film forms on top, I'm avoiding those as much as I can.

Well, have fun these weekend, put some miles on that bike and I'll keep you posted on this build.

Your input has certainly saved me a lot of trouble!

DO NOT try to thin Tamiya acrylics with Testor's brush cleaner.  Acrylics are water/alchohol based, and Testor's enamels are oil based.  And you know what they say about oil and water not mixing.  Try thinning the Tamiya paints with isopropyl (rubbing not drinking) alchohol.  Works great for me.  Testor's brush cleaner should never be used as a thinner, even with oil based enamels.  I use Testor's airbrush thinner to thin all their enamels, even when brushing on.  As a matter of fact, I really don't like to use Tamiya's brush paints unless I absolutely can't mix or match the color from Testor's enamels.  They're just too thin or clumpy or just plain moody to get good coverage with.  Hope this helps, also hope I didn't come off as being too harsh.  I just know P.O.-ed I get when I make mistakes I could have avoided had I known better.  Can't wait to see the C/F and fork set!  I haven't done much lately, too busy with work and riding my 1/1 motorcycle.  Long weekend coming up though, hopefully some progress pics then...

                        just a note to say we now have all Scale Motorsport products for bikes, etch, template decals and 1/12 - 1/20 c/f decals.   Not on site yet BUT there ;-)

Also new sheet for '96 NSR500 Luca Cadalora.

Can't wait to work on that part of the project.

The template is on the back of the CF sheet, which makes it easy.  In hind site I would have made a copy of the template for furture use however, you can still use the CF you cut out as a template for other builds.

I've used the SMS CF kit for the M1.  A great template kit, even though it does not have a template for everything on the bike that is CF.  The two biggest peices it is missing are the fork covers and the rear cowel undertail.  I used the prescribed masking tape method for that.  There is also no template for the speedo, but everything else is pretty well covered with the template kit.

I would imagine even if the templates are for the spider man bike that they would apply to any '04 M1.  The only difference on that bike was the paint job on the OUTSIDE of the fairings.

If not, I'll follow your steps and do it by hand!

1. Yes, that's exactly what the templates are for.  I haven't used them yet, I did the much more tedious and time consuming method of masking tape and cuticle scissors.  Let us know how the templates work, I'm thinking of using them for my NSR.

2. Also yes, the whole thing is C/F.  If you look WAY back in this thread there are some reference pics.  Also Yamaha used to have some good pics on their racing website.  If you Google YZR-M1, you'll get a ton of pics.

3. If you get the templates, you don't have to worry about "the rest", from what I can see, the template set has every C/F piece on the bike laid out.  Just remember your Micro sol/set, maybe a haridryer, and some time.  Now, my question is are the templates just that- you still have to buy sheets of C/F decals, or is the template set all you need?  I guess we shall see...

4. I painted the whole black rack of parts from my M1 TS-29.  I think a lot of guys do that.  Just looks better, and not so "plasticky". 

 

I'm not the guru here though, Seabee or Joel are the ones you want to chime in on this.

Hello everybody!

First off, congrats to every Nicky Hayden fan....he rode a great race!

Second, how do I post pix?....I just finished my 2004 M1's motor and I'd like to share it with the masters.

Also, any tips on the spak plugs wiring?

Last but not least, I'll be ordering the CF for the necessary parts so I have a couple of questions on that for those who have built this model:

1- The "templates" at SMS, are they design to help getting the right shape of, for example, the CF piece for the air box?

Excuse my ignorance but I'm learning as I read this posts....

2- Is the air box/ram air intake completely made out of CF?

3- Any tips on how to do the rest of the CF?

4- Did you paint the frame and triple trees with TS29 or you just left it black as they came? it sems paint would fill up the tiny holes in the frame....

               coming soon will be a supplement set for Rossi to go with the US and Valencia bikes. Also a set of '05 early and late Gauloise bike decals that are different to the normal  style, and a rider decal set for the '05 US bike.  More $^'s than you can poke a tired RCV at.

Now why do you think they're coming out with the special editions first, and only with Edwards number as the only option available?  I really don't think a #46 in the Gauloises shceme would exactly be a bad seller.  Loss of that sponsor, maybe?  But even then, why no #46, and why not just the typical non-tobacco "GOOOO!!!"?    Just strikes me as odd.

I was wondering where everyone went! Great result for Nicky, not so good if you are a Rossi fan as it looks like the crown may be slipping. Colin's bike looks great. I have my 2005 M1 and have started the build, so far so good. If someone could tell me how to post pictures I'll keep you all up to date on my progress. The additonal detail kit was not available in Hong Kong when I was there last week but is available at HLJ, having used the one for the 2004 version I think they are defitinley worth the extra layout. So far it's much like the 2004 M1. Cheers

It was great!

I was worried after Saturdays qualifying that Nicky found himself in trouble.  After the start of the race all those fears went away.  He was the only rider all weekend to dip down into the 1'22"s, but after a terrible qualifying I was having my doubts.

How about the design on Colin's bike?????

As from the Pit Walk Collection 2004 (I absolutely love this book)

The most visual difference I see in the South African GP set up is where the transponder is located on the bike.  This may only be for Abe's set up (as it is the only photo I can find with the disk covers), but the transponder is located on the same carbon bracket as the battery (exhaust side).   Also, Abe  has the GO!!!!!!!!! logo on his frame where as Rossi does not.

Re Studio 27 brake disk discussion I have a few of these sets because I fell prey to the problem of there being only one disk. Thought I needed 2 sets to make my Rossi bike! As everyone has surely now concluded there are only parts to make up 1 disk but if you read the instructions carefully it states it is for Melandri, left side only. So I guess it is some sort of trial disk or something unique to his riding style or a particular track. The other interesting part is the winter shrouds which I have seen photos of on Rossis bike but not sure if this was during tests or in a race. Does anyone know when it would be correct to put thiese on a model?

Greetings to all of you. I have been following this build for a while and thought I should get involved, seems like fun. I am South African but currently based in Sri Lanka, noticed a few of you are from the Kaap which I miss a lot. Modelling here brings a lot of challenges, not a single outlet so running out of essential supplies happens till I can travel to the real world and re-sup. Imagine running out of flat black, gloss black, etc etc I am sure you get the picture! Thank whoever for the internet which is how I get most of my kits and supplies. I have been a general modeller for about 20 years but at best am an ameteur, possess 10 thumbs and spend most of time picking up parts off the floor! However since finding the bikes have not touched a plane or helicopter and doubt I will again. I am truly motivated by some of the quality I see in this forum and have picked up some tips from all of you, isn't this what this hobby is about anyway? Once I have learnt how to post some photos I'll show you my collection so far. Since 1998 I have been a Rossi fan so he figures strongly or at least his bikes do. I do build others in between waiting for new variants of his bikes (eg 2005 models). Chat soon.

I still don't know what to do with the Flat Silver....because I found pics where that middle part of the engine looks like it's painted in a dark shade of grey...Any tips on that?

I would think this is how he did it.

Cut the molded pegs off. Make the fitting out of solder and hexagonal styrene rod. I'd say the rod is about .8 mm in this case and the solder is about same as the wire, probably .4 mm. Drill holes in the handle part so that the solder fits. It's a bit hard to tell from the pic but it seems as he has put a p/e washer on the handle where the solder enters.

One tip though: It's a lot easier to bend the solder if you have a longer piece and then cut it to an appropriate length after you've bent it. The tough part, as I see it, is to bend the two solder pieces the same way, it's easy to make the bend look like crap...

Racer,

Try Model Master's Chrome Silver.  It's enamel, so if you prefer acrylics it might not be for you, but I prefer it a lot over Tamiya's offering of the same color.  Goes on smooth, and covers evenly with no grainy-ness or pronounced brush strokes.

hhmmmmmmmm.....after careful review, I think my Tamiya XF-16 (flat aluminum) bottle came full of X11 (chrome aluminum) What are the odds of that!!!

Well...I started with the motor today and I'm not too happy with the texture of the colors indicated for it.

I see no difference between Chrome Silver and Flat Silver for example and also the flake sems too thick, therefore it doesn't look "real", instead, it looks grainy. I'm happy with the Metallic Grey though...

Is there a special technique to apply these paints?

Overall it looks good...we'll see how it goes.

Of course, seeing the pics on this website and the pics of Rossi's Laguna M1 make me want to toss my stuff out and cry but at the same time it makes me want build more and get better : )
