1/72 scale Bi-Plane / Tri-Plane Group Build

The instructions state that this fokker belongs to "Oblt. Rudolph Berthold. Ja Sta 11, 1918"

I'll take a picture of the box next time I've got the camera out, but it's going to be a nice blue/red/white paintjob.

Thanks for sharing that rigging method, Rafael. I'll be sure to try it on the Felixstowe. Sure sounds a lot easier than cutting pre-sized pieces of stretched sprue and then trying to get them tight.

I will not be rigging Camel or Spad XIII first. I think, like Frosty said, I have to start with a less complicated rigging system to build my confidence.

I have just discovered Ebay, and have found that I can get a # of biplanes from it !
Have just bid for 4 kits, and have just won a bid for a Go 242/244 Glider. I know, not related to this subject, but I am so excited ! I will build the Gotha for the b/f and his WWII wargaming.

Does anyone else use Ebay for purchasing kits ? Any comments, praise, critisism?

I use Ebay quite frequently to buy kits though not so much for the "deals" but more out of convenience. Sometimes you can snag a great deal but usually by the time you add in postage, you might as well buy it at the LHS. I'd say 99.99% of the sellers I've dealt with have been awesome to deal with. I've only had one bad experience where I sniped to win an auction for the AMT XB-70 Valkyrie. It cost me US$87.96 plus postage and was shipped just wrapped in paper with those nice bright red "Fragile" stickers plastered all over it. You can probably figure out the rest of the story. Overall though, ebay has been a postive experience.

As for the build, I cracked the box open last night to plan my attack and I may actually get started tonight.

Helo all, I'm new here, but this GB sounds interesting. Made me go find a kit I have on the 'to build' list. Pulled it out and it is 1/72! It's the Willams Brothers Douglas World Cruiser, the first planes to fly around the world. I'm sure you all can teach me alot. My previous Bipe was a Searman in Navy livery as a scale of a friend's actual Stearman. It took 4 kits to make up the plane and maybe 10 or more paints to model the wood propeller with it's aluminum clad tips. I'll try and find a pic to add to a post. Regards from South Florida, Andy

Actually Kaz, I bought the Seagull from a fellow club member at his garage/kit sale. The box was pretty banged up but the parts had been bagged. I guess the propeller fell out of the bag somehow anyway. Who knows? Maybe I'll still find it somewhere among the debris on my desk or in the depths of my carpet. I sure hope so. I may also check my spares box to see if there is a two-bladed prop I can use..

I've never used E-bay, but I do have some stuff to auction off. I've heard/read many stories/articles/analyses about E-bay so I may even go to Ubid or some other auction site.

This was one productive WE...

The a/c is practicaly fully assembled and painted and rigged...

A few pics.
1. the pinting was done using a mixture of silver and matt grey to replicate Silver dope. The cowling was painted Alclad dark aluminium. The black lines in the wings where painted using a black marker, in order to simulate the wing structure. This will be covered in a latter stage with silver dope and will barelly be visible, however adding depth to the painting job. The red band is an identification unit band. I've added photoethed stiching, as can bee seen in the following:


2. In here, the top wing is allready in place. I've started by gluing the cabane struts which were aligned using dividers. It is not complicated. If this was a more complicated cabane, i would be using a template (a piece of evergreen plastic with holes such as the top wing). Also, I've glued the wires to the fuselage.


3. The flying wires are all in place. 've used the method described above and the image shows how i keep the plane secured and the wires streched wile the glue is curing.


Finally, this is the status, as of yesterday evening. Flying wires are all in place, lacking the control wires, which I will add after the decals. It is nearly ready.

You guys ever start working on a model, only to realize halfway through that it's looking like.....crap?

That's what happened to me. Upon completion of my most recent 2 models, the only one left on the bench was my little, innocent looking biplane. Perhaps I was getting a little overconfident with my skill level. The red went on last week, and came out really nice. I bought a bottle of blue, and thinned it down. But I thinned it down waaaay too much. Not only that, since the LHS was out of "blue"....I got "light blue". Nevermind the fact that it's a GLOSS, I mixed in some FLAT black to darken it up. Needless to say, the color was not something you'd want to paint your house. So, I decided I'd try it again, not mixed. So I mixed it again with some thinner and started painting. Well, apparently I didn't do a good job taping up the white areas, and so the paint ran under the tape. So now I'll have to clean that up. And the blue just came out kinda "ehh". I spent a good part of the afternoon sanding it all off. I'm goign to go back and get the right blue, mix it properly, and tape everything up better. Live and learn I suppose.

On a different note would people be interested or mind if I posted my Sopwith Camel build which is progressing quite nicely in this thread? I don't want to include it as part of this GB (started prior and 1/48 scale) but it is a related topic and I thought you might be interested in seeing it. If you would I will post progress pics either during this w/end or early next week. Nice to see the good work being done here by all.

Another productive Saturday afternoon... The Martinsyde F.4 Buzzard is hereby declared oficially finished. A very interesting and not so difficult project. Only a few minor problems with rigging (one of the strings jumping off...)

As promised in progress shots of the Camel. The main part of the airframe is all but painted not that it can be seen behind all that masking. A coat of future this evening on the aluminium and then hopefully Tuesday night mask off and spray the cowling (blue). 4 types of masking medium used - Tamiya tape and blue tack, Eduard vinyl mask (kit supplied) and Humbrol maskol. Should be able to reveal all on Wednesday.






The interior is an old pic (obviously it is now enclosed in the fuselage) and I have added fuse wire spokes to the inspection holes in the wheels. More soon.
Rafael great work especially love the Pfalz - BEAUTIFUL.

hi ladie and gents those are some great looking builds you got going on. just giving you a update on my 2 planes my soptwith camel is all done and i am ready to start the other one in a few days after i finish my stuga for the stuga gb. for frost girl you got some great talent thier you need to tell my nice that building models isnt a stupid thing to do. if i ever find my software for my kodak camera i will post some pics

Thanks for the nice comments. I am definitely going to be doing a 1:72 aircraft for this GB. I am just waiting for the local model show (Sept 10&11) where I hope to pick up a bargin or two! The DVI is progressing well and the rib tapes definitely highlight the blue of the fuselage. Nice to see that you haven't extended them onto the ailerons - just as it should be WELL DONE. You should have this finished soon. The blue is on the Camel cowl also so tonight it's off with the masking and if all goes well a coat of future in readiness for the decals. Will continue to post pics as progress is made. Have any of you guys or girls seen the new Eduard 1:48 DVII, DH2 and Bristol F.2B or Rodens DVII, SE5A and 1:72 Camel in the flesh? I have seen pics of the Eduard models and I think I want (NO NEED - this is an addiction) these models.

thanks for the nice words, guys. And great D.VI, frosty! I really like the rib tapes. it really adds to the model.

Simon, from the list you mention above, I have the DH2 in 1/72 and it is a super kit, but not really an easy one due to the rigging. The 1/48 version should be a little more easy, but still... now, for the new Bristol F.2B, i must say it is one of the most beautifull kits i´ve seen. Too petty it is the "wrong scale"....;-). as for Roden, I must say I have all the catalogue in 1/72, with the exception of the new Camel, which I could'nt find yet on the stores here. I like them all, although the D.VII has some problems in adjusting the bottom wing properly. But, overall, they are really great kits and Roden should receive a medal from what they are doing towards WW1 modelling!!

and, by the way, your Camel is UAU!!
