Well, thanks to a friend on the LEM, I will be receiving a replacement propeller to fit onto my SOC-3 Seagull. Now that the decals are on and it has been clearcoated, I shall be able to finish this model once my replacement has arrived. Meanwhile, here are two views of the Seagull all ready and waiting:

Thanks for looking. Comments are welcome.

Hey, can I still get in on this one? I've got two Ardpol resin kits I'm working on for the 28th Aviation Brigade Museum room. I'm building a Douglas O-2H from 1928 and a Douglas O-38E from 1935, both in PA National Guard markings.

Exquisite build Duke. Glad you have been able to source a replacement prop.
Really great work - what's next?

Cobra - this group build runs to the end of 06 and I for one would like to see you aboard. The more the merrier IMHO.

Simon,

Thanks! Count me in! Of course, I've got tons of other builds going and no time to do anything, but I've gotta get these two done for work, so they take priority!

Thanks Simon! I appreciate it.

What's next? Hmmmm.....

Check out the Ships Forum ofr two of my builds being completed, and I also finished several Armor pieces I posted there.

I should have the Beechcraft Bonanza finished soon, and I'll p[robably go ahead and finish off the C-119 Boxcar.

Hmmm.......

Next I'll be starting an AC130U Gunship in response to a challenge I received from a fellow IPMS club member.

Among others.......

And now, thanks to Ed, (keyworth on the LEM Forums) who sent me a replacement propeller, I can now declare the construction on this SOC-3 Seagull completed.

This is the old Revell SOC-3 Seagull in 1/72 scale, painted with Tamiya Metallic Silver in the rattle can and Testor's Yellow and Polly Scale Red with a brush. She is coated overall in Future semi-gloss; although more gloss than flat. I have four views of her:

I am especially pleased by the engine detail I was able to do. I had painted it first in Polly Scale Oily Black, then dry-brushed it with Testor's Steel. I like the outcome.

Now that the construction is complete, I will now take some time to rig her. I'll have photos up later when the rigging is complete.

Comments are welcome.

progress report:
i haven't gotten much else done on my little fokkers,
i was working on the white sections of the fuselage
on the Baumer a/c, but need 2 lay down another coat
of white paint because the streaky green finish is still
kind of visible underneath... Dead [xx(]
hopefully i will have some more 2 report & updated pix next week.

Very nice work on the Seagull, Duke! Thumbs Up [tup] Very bright, colourful bird, almost retina searing!Big Smile [:D]

I've managed to get a little more work done on the Felixstowe in the last little while. I've done some more cockpit work, some engine work as well as assembled the wing sections together. I picked up a copy of the French REPLIC magazine that has great build up article and "walkaround" shots. It will be very valuable as I progress through this build.

Another sweet looking build Duke - good luck with the rigging!

Bstrump great to hear of your progress on the Felixstowe. Was talking with someone today who said the decals for that kit (from personal experience) were very difficult in use and 2 others who have had no luck with those of the Gotha GV (my build). I thought you might like that heads up. The members of the local WWI group advised me to go with aftermarket items. Don't know if I can afford that currently. Let us know how you get on.

Frosty - same here my friend no progress to report!

Regards one and all.

Thanks guys! These are my first biplanes AND my first all resin kits, so I'm a little apprehensive. The O-2H had a bit of an accident when I was leaving the office, so now I've gotta scratchbuild a tailplane, but other than that, it is doing pretty well.

I've got the fuselage together, lower wings and tailplanes mounted and the cockpit is pretty much finished. I need to re-mount the instrument panel and paint the gunner's ring. Once that's done, I need to paint the fuselage AAC blue and then AAC yellow on the wings. I'm going to be hand painting the NGP (National Guard of Pennsylvania) markings on the wheel covers and tail.

Now, my question is, what do you guys use for rigging in this scale?! Stretched Sprue? Fishing line? I'm a little nervous about that!

Thanks!

Stretched sprue is one option that is probably the easiest to put on. Getting consistent diameter is the difficult part. I'm considering using 2 lb. fishing line to rig mine. Problem I always face there is that I can never get the stuff to look straight and tight. I have been taught some techniques that should alleviate that problem, and will be trying them out when I start on this bird.

Also, while going through my stash, I think I saw an An-2 Colt Russian cargo biplane. If I am right, I'll dig it out and add that to this Group Build. I'll keep everyone posted on that possibility.

Simon: Thanks for the heads up on the Roden decals. However, decaling the Felixstowe is way off in the future for me. I've also got the Gotha GVa/b on the way as well so bad news about decals is not good. That kit, if I recall correctly, is completely covered in lozenge decals. Still, I'm really starting to like these Roden kits.

Hello all,

Here are some progress pics of my SOC-3 going together.

Front shot of plane.

Outboard wing float with grab handle made from copper wire you can just make out the pre-drilled holes for the rigging.

Front shoot with both outboard floats and pantoon, added the tie off tee to the pantoon, also replaced the pantoon struts with flattened aluminum pipe. I placed pins inside the pipe to attach to the fuselage and pantoon.

Side view better shot of tie-off on pantoon.

Cockpit almost finished, added a piece to close off the back and will not have the figures in it.

Top shot.

I hope to have more of it completed by the end of this week. I've pre-drilled most of the lower rigging holes. I need to add the tail tie down bracket still also.

Thanks for looking Big Smile [:D]

Cheers,
Thom

Actually, you've done an excellent job on that bird Thom! I love the new additions and the look of the cockpit. This is going to be excellent!

Are you also going to use the USS Pennsylvania paint scheme? Also, It's good you remembered to predrill the rigging holes, that is something I forgot to do! Dunce [D)]Banged Head [banghead]Banged Head [banghead]Censored [censored]

Hey yall... just passing through and decided to peep in here as I am in the middle of a biplane myself... wanted to get some inspiration..

Duke Maddog - I like that Seagull! I am building an F3F-2 right now and loving it... the paint scheme is identical to yours except the cowl is all red. The thing I like is the bracing (think that is what it is called, thin aerodynamic strips of metal instead of cables) is PE, and the holes are already there. (It's the Accurate Miniatures kit, nice detail!)

tlivancso - your's looks nice too! Can't wait to see how that detail is going to look!

This is my first biplane and if there is a repeat of this GB I will be here! I guess I was scared of the rigging but now I think I can do it!

Oh well.. I'll be popping in now and then to check out yalls progress!

---edit--- the F3F is 1/48 scale or I would thought about joining!
---Tom--- O' brave new world, That has such people in it!

Hello again, Back online, but slowly after Wilma blew thru last week. Sorting things out and trying to get going again. Having trouble finding the color yellow to match the box art. Seems like it has a brown tone to it. So far I hve a green-yellow on it in Tamia paint, but it's too green. Any ideas on how to tint yellow to a darker color? TIA, Andy

FFD:
maybe try adding a few drops of brown paint 2 ur yellow ?
a little will go a long way...
if u want 2 try tinting what's already on there, how about a thin wash of brown
or buff paint oversprayed ?
hth,

progress update from 'Schwerin West':
the baumer a/c continues 2 give me fits, the smer kit decal
stripes 4 the turtledeck & fuselage sides r too short 2 fit the
proper locations, i had 2 pull 'em off...
but luckily i have another set of decals 4 jasta 2 a/c that has
the markings 4 Lt. Baumer's a/c, among others & since they r
from eagle strike, i'm hoping they will fit rite where they r supposed
2 go ! (fingers crossed !)
this weekend i hope 2 get those markings on, then i can do final
assembly of the first batch of birds from my little fokker factory.
here is an updated pic of an a/c i'm crossbuilding 4 this & the
Your Own Flying Circus A/C GB:

fokker dr.i in personal markings,
flown by Lt. Erika Von Frostein, Jasta 2, 1918

more pix next week !

Frosty,  Thon, you both are doing outstanding work! Keep on buildiing, these are looking great!

I've been lax in getting any threading done on my Seagull. I've got several projects I want to get done first before I tackle that difficult part of this kit. I'll post pics when I get hre done.

Well I finally got the bird painted and ready to put the decals on and Murphy's law hit me square upside the head. This being an old model the decals were yellowed so over the past couple of weeks I have had them soaking in the sun to bleach them back and it worked great, the problem is the other night when I tried to put on the decals starting with the upper wing V and number designation one, the decal crumbled in the water. Banged Head [banghead]

Well now it is back to the drawing board to fix it, so as soon as this situation is fixed I hope to have it finished over the holiday weekend.

Will post pics soon.

Cheers
