Finished!  I present my 1/48 Hobbycraft Sea Fury with Cutting Edge cockpit and external details.  Kit markings of No. 802 Squadron, Aug. 1952 during Korean War.  This particular aircraft more than likely did not have rockets, but I wanted them because it looks cooler.

The Cutting Edge cockpit and external detail sets were great, except for the propeller blades.  Painting gave me headaches.  It's a simple scheme (except for the ID stripes) but everything that could go wrong did.  Shot wrong color for Dark Sea Gray and had to repaint, paint peeled up again and again when masking was pulled off, overspray screwups, couldn't get the fuselage ID stripes straight, etc. etc.  I'm just glad it's done.

Beyond the paint issues, there's only one real major goof, and all the rest are minor.  But, I'll let everyone else find them.

It's a shame Tamiya or Hasegawa don't release this aircraft.  The old Hobbycraft kit is the only game in town so the aircraft is really underrepresented.  I've always liked it's brutal look.

Anyway, thanks for letting me be part of the group build and let me know what you think.

I think it's a great build. Personally, I do more weathering and use more wash, but to each his own! I especially thought the invasion stripes came out really well, I always find it a pain to do those stripes and they never come out just right. Any particular insight to your technique? How do you make sure the widths are consistent?

Once again, great looking build.

Thanks, Waikong.  Personally, I'm not much of a fan of weathering.  It just looks weird sitting on my clean shelf.  Occassionally I'll throw a light wash on a build, but not often.  Now if I had a diorama, an environmental context to influence the weathering, that would be different.

Stripes on the wings are easy.  Measure and mark the scaled dimension on the wing and mask.  The fuselage is another story.  I can't seem to get the tape to keep a straight line on a curved surface.  I've tried thin strips of tape, medium strips, it's just a pain.  I had a Typhoon that came out better, but this wasn't so good.  I've hid most of it by just not taking pictures of the crummy areas.

looks really nice, too bad you had to close up the cockpit!!  I echo tankys feelings, but I think that you have done a stellar job!!

Looks great arki30, I really like it and impressed that you kept with it with all the problems. When things start going amiss for me, I usually just want to bag it. Do you just have strong resolve or do you have some magic pep talk you could send my way :-) Anyway, it looks really nice. (I hate doing fuselage stripes too and will fight them for what seems like hours, but yours look nice)

Thanks guys, for all of the comments.  I will say that in person it's not quite as "clean" as the pictures indicate.  I put a semi-gloss coat on it and probably overdid the lighting when I took the pictures.

I actually purchased the Squadron vacuform canopy in order to display the cockpit.  But once I split the front and rear vacuform halves apart, I wasn't impressed by them.  Too flimsy or something, so I stuck with the kit canopy.  It's not that big of a deal since the cockpit is black and it would be hard to see all the detail anyway.

OK, finally got the engine done for my p-47 razorback. Again, I added wiring to the ring, ties from aluminum, and a nice placard from eduard. I used a grimy black wash - kind of wish it was a little more prominant now, but oh well. Once it is hidden in the cowling and the your mind fills in some blanks, I think it is going to look pretty nice.

Here you go...

Let me know any thoughts - good or bad.

I agree with you that the darker wash would probally be nicer, but that wiring job is just awesome. I've tried this a few time and have never done such a neat job. I'm about to do my engine also, so I'll use yours as inspriation to get it right this time. I've been using thin electrical wiring or fishing wire, what type of material did you use?

I used 30 gauge insulated wrapping wire. Picked up a spool at radio shack for a couple bucks. Even though I used tons for the engine, I have tons left. It will probably last me forever, and I'll never have to break open electronics looking for wire again :-)

Good luck with yours.

Looks great to me, Leon.  Well done, and frankly, I like the wash the way it is.

One of these days I'll actually start my P-51.  I have received the Ultracast early D tail parts and they look sweet, so now I have all the pieces that I need, just have to wait for life to give me the time to build the darn thing.

To refresh your memory I plan on building the Tamiya P-51D with the Aires detail set, Eduard PE and the Ultracast filletless tail modification, and using kit decals.

looking forward to seeing everyones insane progress soon.

'bout all that I have done is test fit the Ultracast tail to the P-51.  It will fit nicely once I clean up the cuts that I made for it.  I also began assembling the cockpit.

Alas, all building has come to a halt as we prepare to move once again.  It will probably be around Nov time when I can get back to it.  I'll be watching though for any signs of progress!!

Big Smile [:D]

Tanky,
Great work on the spit cockpit. I agree with others posting in the other thread - that would be some great detail for 1/48, so in 1/72 it is pretty amazing! Looking forward to more.

i'm working on the gunbays for my spitifre now. I'll post pics when I've got them attached and the issues worked out.

DAMN, though, this gunbay set is nightmarish. 2 steps forward, one step back. The fit is terrible... I'll just continue my war against it though.

TANKY PRIMES!!!!!!!!! TANKY SCORES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

There seem to be no major issues that need correcting (knock on wood).

After a thorough clean up (some rescribes, a bit more sanding, and a few pieces to attach) IT'S PAINT TIME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
