WWII Carrier Aircraft Design GB (Starts Now -- Ends November 30, 2006)

I’m sorry all for being completely absent for a week. For the last two weeks I’ve been busy with sports and doing research for grad project, so I couldn’t give a full reply only a brief one to some. It looks like we got some good discussions going on here though.


Jay: Looks like you got a tough choice there between Bill Atkinson and Hammy Gray . If you can’t decide, you can always do both for this build.



Kevin: It would be really interesting to see a P –51 done as a carrier aircraft. Hope you include it in this build.

Bob, Thanks! I never even saw it and I read the mag from front to back this weekend. I'll have to check once I get home tonight! You know, I think I sent that tip way back in March or April!

Put me on the list for a 1/48 Tamiya F4U-1. I purchased one off of e-bay here recently and this'll give me an excuse too build it.

As old as I feel right now it'll be more like 10 hours. Stupid arthritis is acting up again in both of my knees.

I don’t know about that. Older people are wiser and knowledgeable. As for young people (like myself), we would probably get ecstatic and go out and start swinging wildly and get crap knock out of us, easily...

I have a quick question about the starting date. To me the absolutely most time consuming (and dreaded) part of a model is part clean up (removing mold lines, filling ejection holes, etc.) Is this considered building and should wait until the start date, or would it be ok to pre-clean the parts in a nice leisurely manner up until March??

Are you serious? Dude, get a hobby. Oh, wait.....

I don’t consider it as building, but when you start cleaning and filling ejection holes then your starting the entry before the original date. There shouldn’t be any rush—so if we need extra time will extend the ending date.

Thanks. No problem, just thought it would be nice to get that dreaded part of the model out of the way, so the actual build would be all fun. Oh well...excitedly waiting then.

Oh good Lord, only 158 days till we start, and I don't have a kit yet!

At least this gives me plenty of time to plug away at the missus and family for Christmas ideas!

I think it will be the Hobby Craft British Corsair as Lt Hammy Gray's Corsair from when he recieved the VC.

I've been building an AccMini F3F-2 for the Pearl Harbor GB and might get another for this.. it really is building up nice... and I can't wait to put the metalizer on it!!! a lot of detail and it comes OOB with decals for EVERY F3F-2 that ever flew!!! can't beat that with a stick!!!

oh yeah.. I better wait till I get to the PE bracing... I might change my mind.

From what I've heard the PE bracing is really nice. Of course I have never tried it and look forward to hearing your take on it. That is a kit I have always thought long and hard about getting. Are there pictures over in the Pearl Harbor thread?

not yet... I just started it... the interior is a bit basic but so it was on the real thing... I'm about to close the fuselage and I'll take pics right before and after.. the thing that is amazing is how small this thing is for being 1/48. it's about as big as a 1/72 P-47..

I have been looking through my stash and find I have at least 10 carrier aircraft from WWII. I am leaning toward the Trumpeter 1/32 F4F-4 with the Waldron cockpit and guns and the Eduard exterior and interior PE and will have Microscale decals for Marine Squadron VMF-233 that left Hawaii on the escort carrier U.S.S Long Island. You can pencil me in for that but I have plenty of time to make a final decision. Thanks.

Well i guess i'm gonna have to do it, even though i've resigned myself to not joining any more GB's the timeframe on this one works for me so put me down for a 1/48 Tamiya Fairey Swordfish, i'm not sure which one but frobably one of those that flew of the Ark Royal to attack the Bismark.....
I would rather go for the A5M4 Claude but even though they served in the Pacific after Dec 7th i don't beleive they were on the Carrier decks at that time............

Soooo Tom does a Fairy Swordfish Qualify for the "Tho9900 Fringe award"

Sorry I've been a bit quiet guys... the hurricane is still a big subject here... Just took my mom and dad out to their house to visit it for the first time since the storm. They live int he Beaumont - Port Arthur area where the eye came in.. looks like a war zone! Not a yard without at least one tree down in it, whjole house uprooted and blown across lots (not mobile homes... HOUSES) businesses totally destroyed, just iron framework where the building used to be... no sign of the tin...

Kind of uplifting to see electrical trucks from as far away as Michigan there... a lot of states helping out, trying to get their power up...

Anyway, back on subject... no pick for what I will build yet... still haven't had a chance to pick something... or even model to be honest.. I did talk to my brother in law (a contractor) and he is going to help me run a long hose from the garage through the ceiling and have a quick-connect hose adapter with a wall plate (kinda like the cable TV hook up thing) so I can connect up and spray with little noise! I thought that would be cool. Also since the modeling room had so much damage I hope to redo it like I want!!! all the sheetrock has to go anyway, might as well build in shelves and such...

anywayz... talk to yall later... hope to be around more after the reconstruction.. and glad to see the fall migration of the "Usual Suspects" has started!!!

Tom-I was in the north african GB,am I a usual suspect?Haha
I still dont know what ill build.I was thinking a a buffalo or something.BTW,does the aircraft on the carrier have to had been in battle?If so,ill just choose something else to build.
