Okay, Got my Corsair in the mail this week. Definately list me for the Tamiya F4U-1D in 1/48. I'm still searching for a definative and clear pic of the hook on the Mustang, so I may have too put that one on hold. I may try to do the Corsair and Helldiver in markings from the same carrier, I'll have to try to see what I can come up with.

Tom, you'll do anything to get a new hobby room won't ya? Glad to hear that you and yours survived the storm.

Nick, the Buffalo was used in combat, albeit from a shore base, with disastrous results. The Fins used it in combat with spectacular results.

Tom - Sounds really terrible. Good luck in rebuilding and be safe.

Paknick - The aircraft does not have to be on carrier deck just as long it is carrier aircraft design and that it was enlisted in WWII. It does not necessarily have been in a battle. Ground base aircraft are welcome too, just as long it shows that it was from a aircraft carrier. If you want to do a buffalo your more then welcome to, Just as long it has WWII markings. I hope this answer your question, if not just post it again.Wink [;)]

Wooverstone8 I was reading your last post about the Buffalo and now i'm wondering whether the A5M4 Claude fits the bill, it was on the Carrier decks at the outbreak of the European conflict but was replaced by the A6M Zero shortly before the attack on Pearl Harbour, I have also read a report of a Wildcat pilot shooting one down near Luzon which means it was still in limited service during the conflict in the Pacific
theater......

Must admit having similar thoughts myself, but along the lines af a Free French Dauntless or an FAA Skua.

I did some research on the A5m4 and they were still using it through the war as a trainer aircraft. At the end of the war they were using it as a suicide plane. If you like, you can do a Claude in WWII markings for this GB.

Yes those would qualify since they’re a carrier aircraft design.

Basically... if it had a tail hook it qualifies! and then some without even do! (The Malta spits delivered on the USS Wasp etc...) of course it had to have been from WWII era...

And no one start quibbling about when WWII really started! Wink [;)]

I'm almost for certain doing another F3F-2... I need to research some more but some of the stateside carriers had small amounts of them on their decks still on Dec 7th, 1941... found some info on navy.mil about it when researching one for the Pearl Harbor build...

Don't know if it saw any action, but as far as I'm concerned WWII started September 39, which means it's in scope for this GB.

Nick - she was going through trials them she was commisioned in July 1941 and was still getting the kinks worked out so to speak... Actually she never saw combat.. They always used her for training pilots. In 1944 she went to the pacific to train pilots closer to the action...

your closest chance of any of her aircraft seeing combat was when she was ferrying AC to the recently (fighting was still happening on the island in places) captured island of Guadalcanal... but by then the Japanese planes would have been destroyed I am sure...

Mmmmmm, Quibble and Bits

Found out yesterday that the USN P-51 had an arrestor hook "similiar to the Sea Hurricane" This doesn't help at all. Does anybody now of a place to get a schematic drawing of this?? I've sent an e-mail to the North American Aviation Heritge site and also a snail mail requesting help, but no response yet.

Yeah i really like the scheme it wears for the Carrier Soryu in 1938 with the Black and white fues bands so i'll probably go with that but not for this GB...
For this one i'll stick with the Swordfish that fired the fatal torpedo that jammed the Bismarks rudder........

Jules - are you doing the Tamiya swordfish with the PE and all (the expensive one) .. if so I'd be interested in how that one builds up... I am losing my fear of biplanes with this F3F-2 I am doing... I might finally decide to do that one for my dad.. he loves the swordfish!

Don't forget the tartar sauce and the little wedge of lemon. Green beans and mashed potatos are good with that also. Might I suggest a nice white wine with that? (or is that red wine that goes with fish?)

I'm going to hold off on the Naval Mustang seeing as I can't find a good view of that hook. I got an e-mail from the NAA heritage people yesterday and they have nothing and know nothing about this.

ok got a little more for you, complete with one not so great pic of the tail hook... it looks to have the same basic lines as the ones on the other carrier planes such as the SBD, also the A1-H has a similar tailhook.. looks like you could scratch it as most of it appears to be inside the plane with only the tip of the hook visible...

what appeared to be the curl of a tail hook appears to actually be a fixture on the bulkhead of that structure behind the Mustang...

this is only a painting but is right in line on the description of the tail hook. It was mounted aft of the rear landing gear... so would have layed snug up against the tail... here's where I got it: http://forum.keypublishing.co.uk/showthread.php?t=27002&highlight=44-14017

Yeah Tom thats the one, I beleive it's also a clear edition as well but i won't be leaving the fueselage clear.....I'll be building one of the 2 swordfish from No2 sub flight from Ark Royal flown by either Lt Faussett or Sub-Lt Pattisson as it is not known which aircraft deliverd the torpedo that jammed the rudders of the Bismark which caused it to steer on an unalterable course directly towards the British Fleet........
And yeah i'm also looking forward to getting into a few biplane builds for something different, building 1/48 WWII fighters isn't losing it's appeal to me but it is kinda turning into a standard affair where i use the same techniques on all of them and i find myself wanting to build something with a little challenge in it....
I'm also hopeing that when Jay posts up his Allied Aces GB that he includes WWI cause i have the Eduard 1/48 Sopwith Triplane that i would love to do in the Markings of Australias highest scoring fighter ace R A Little...
Hey maybe you could do Eddie Rickenbackers Spad for that GB TomWink [;)]

Kevin now you have me intrigued with this Navalised P-51 that your on the hunt for, i may have to have a little look through the web for it.........

Jules - it is kind of interesting reading about it.. it made one flight and one only... when the Navy learned the critical speed between stall out and a snap spin caused from accelration was only 5mph different they sealed it as non-carrier worthy... not to mention all the mods such as beefier gear etc... also the length was a problem as they took up too much space on deck so wouldn't be able to carry many.

Final judgement came when we had isnlands close enough to Japan to provide airfields for P-51's... the whole idea behind it was to provide advance placement for fighters to escort in the B-29's with...

A naval p-51 is a very interesting subject. I think I'll stick to mainstream subjects though.

Jules, I still want to do the Allied Aces GB but I was thinking of announcing it closer to the end of the Candian GB, maybe in December. Yes, it would be both WW1 and WW2.

Kevin - I dunno to me it looks feasible...

actually what is wierd (maybe not so wierd) is the area where the drop hook should be at can't be found... looking at the pic, *TO ME* it looks like the pic has been altered, maybe it was a publicity shot that had to go through the censors... but to me the area right under the tail doesn't match the surrounding areas... maybe it really was like in the painting? The reports on it I saw all said it was mounted behind the tailwheel.. I'll keep looking though to see if I can dig up something better...
