Dave based on my research (Brian Walkers RCAF serial # site & Greg Kopchuk's 429 Sqn site) 429 Sqn operated MK I & III the MK X's I believe were used by 408 Sqn.  I'll have a look and see who used MK X's.

Thanks for the pointers Bear, I'll check them out.  Would your Uncle not have flown the Canadian made MK X? (which is essentially the same as the MK III)

Dave Here is the list of decals I ordered (all from Squadron)

RAF Letters large Superscale Intl, MS720052

RAF Serial Numbers & Letters, Tally Ho KPH272004

    Lancaster Nose Art, Zolts ABZ72015

At the squadron web site do a search by manufacturer & lookup the pn's.  I did a part number check and it kept telling me no such number etc yet when I looked up the mfg and scroled down to the number it was there, go figure.

Now I just have to find out if my uncle flew in an MK I or MK III 429 Sqn used both.  I love the research part.

Marc, I would be interested in knowing what decals you ordered.  Did you order a sheet of squadron codes?  If so I would like to know which ones and where you got them from for when I get around to building my Lanc.

It would be huge, but man, it would be gorgeous!  I've been really turned off by Revell kits though, I always wind up with ones that have raised panel lines, so I stopped buying them.

Only 2 more days to go!  Can't wait to get started on my Beaufighter!

After doing some research I became intested in American use of the Beaufighter during the war, so was hoping to do a Beaufighter in U.S. scheme.  Unfortunately, it turns out that they were used by several Nightfighter squadrons stationed in the Meditteranean, and therefore weren't used by us in the Atlantic.  Anyway, I really like the gray/green camo, so I'll stick with the way I was originally going to paint it.

The more I learn about the Beaufighter, the more I love it.  I've also become very interested in their missions.  Those are some brave men flying long, dangerous missions.  I need to find some good books that tell their stories, anyone have any recommendations?

I'm going to have to get another one and make it up in the camo used at Malta, looks really good!   Are there any decent 1/32 kits available of the Beaufighter to anyones knowledge?

According to my references on the Beaufighter the original concept is described as:

"As Bristol prepared to test flight the first Beaufort, chief designer Leslie Frise and his colleague Roy Fadden, undertook a design study of the new torpedo bomber to see where the airframe could be adopted into a stop-gap fighter.  The RAF would, it was estimated, be critically short of fighters in the event of war.

The idea of producing a fighter with minimum cost and without the long timescale needed for an entirely new, off the drawing board, aircraft was enthusiastically taken up by the Air Ministry Staff.  A few days after the first Beaufort flew, Bristol was asked to build four prototypes of the Beaufort Fighter."

Scott (espins1), the Beaufighter I'm doing is the TFX Beaufighter UB-E (pictured below) from 455 Sqdn RAAF which was attached to RAF Coastal Command.  The color scheme is extra dark sea grey over sky with invasion stripes.

JAY from what i have read the beaufighter had a lot of components handed down from the bristol beaufort medium bomber/patroll aircraft but i may be wrong they have very similar lines though.and Jules i had the mosquito in mind as well and even the Ju-88C

Dave, please pardon the faux pasAshamed [*^_^*], if you can forgive me, my eyes shall not gaze upon the offending plastic until thy appointed time! Black Eye [B)](I was weak, you can understand can't you?Wink [;)])

Chris I believe the Beaufighter was developed with the intent of being a fast, long range fighter and not a bomber...

Welcome to the group build Scott. I'll update the front page as soon as I can.

Jay, nice looking PBY, I was curious as to how it compares to the wingspan of the Sunderland that I'm working on so I just looked it up. The PBY is only 9' (113' compared to 104') shorter in the span than the Sunderland... pretty impressive. The sunderland however is more than 20' longer. In 1/72 that means the Sunderland is 3.5" longer. Now that you've seen the PBY you may have a better appreciation as to why its taking me so long to build the beast (the size as well as the fact that its an Airfix kit).

BTW: you do know that snipping sprue before the start date is technicaly against the rules don't you. Lucky for you "you know who" hasn't been up this way or she would be dropping by with the special suit! lol!

I had the kit in the truck, so I just went out to drool on it for a couple minutes.  At first glance, I really like the gray and green camo pattern of the option supplied in the kit for a Mk. VI serving with the 96th Squadron, Scotland 1943.  I have a bunch of homework to do still (that's half the fun of modelling), so I may become suddenly inspired after I do some research and might change my mind and look for aftermarket decals... need to see what my options are.  Hopefully I'll stumble across a photo or something that will inspire me.

Sounds like we'll be comparing some notes on this build.  What scheme are you going to build yours in?

We haven't actually started building anything yet Scot so I don't think you're too late to join up at all, but Dave is running this build so I'm sure he'll pop in soon and do the formalities.

So I taped some of the Canso together to get an idea on how big the PBY was.  Holy cow!  it is huge!

The two blue models are my Bbolingbroke(Blenheim) and a Fw190 D9, both in 1:72.  Have a look.

Well not much to report on other than the fact that I've ordered the Vallejo paints that I'll need for the build.  They should be here by the end of the week, so I'll be in plenty of time for kick-off.

The rockets and replacement exhausts I won't need for a while yet so I'm not in a huge hurry to order them.

Cheers
