Well made some progress tonight... the cockpit is almost done and I am ready to close the fuselage....  My aging eyes had a bit of trouble with the 1/72nd PE but I finally finished up 99% of it... interesting is I can only pick out some of the obvious pieces like the rudder "shoes" and compass etc... the nice part is the overhead console that wasn't a part of the original kit... It really did add something to it... I think if I did naother I would opt for the vac form canopy though as the canopy is sufficiently thick OOB to not make it as visible as I would like.

I'll take some pics in the AM and let yall see... after dryfitting the fuselage it looks like little putty will be needed... the worst part is it looks like the area under the fuselage with several small antennas (I am guessing that's what they were) is the part needing it the worst... maybe a shim would work better....

Welcome to the build Harold (Il Leone) & Scott (LimoDriver), it's good to have you both on board.

Scott, to enter the build all you need to do is nominate your build (already done) and then just start building and blabbing.  As you go along take some digital shots and post them so that we can all admire your handiwork.

Harold, if you are using Polly S paints then you will need the following colors:

Dark Earth P:PCE76, Dark Green P:PCE75 and usually Sky P:PCE72 for the lower surfaces.  However Polly S don't make Duck Egg Blue so you'll have to go with Model Master (I'm assuming acrylic here) 4748.  Just check your references to see if the Hurricane should have Sky Type S, Duck Egg Blue, Sky Blue or Pale Blue undersides.  Oh and remember you will need some RAF Interior Green as well which is Model Master 4850.

Cheers

Looks great Dave, that PE certainly makes a huge difference to the instrument panel doesn't it.  Oh and what exactly did happen to the Mk.II to make you end up binning it?

Cheers

Yes it does. Now if I can just figure out the seat straps and get them installed correctly Sigh [sigh]

Thanks for the comments guys!

Oh, about other Spitfire. Well, lets just call it a learning experience and let the poor thing die peacefully Wink [;)]

Thanks guys for the words of encouragement.  I'm sure you will understand if my presence here is diminished for a while.  I don't see myself doing much modeling for the next little while. Besides, I still haven't done much on my Spitfire for the Allied Aces GB and my Canso is still waiting for paint.

Dave:  In a word, SWEET!  Approve [^]

Darren:  the Hurricane is a duck egg blue variant.  Not sure if the Bader markings are for a A scheme or B scheme, I "think" it is a B scheme.  Anyway, gotta check on that.  I'm in the lovely mode of snip and clean parts.  Hopefully can start building up the cockpit soon as there are alot of PE goodies to add.

On a slightly different note, has anyone out there done the Revell-o-gram 1/48 He 111?  The Big Ed PE set for that is oh so tempting.  Can you do the bomber version or are you stuck with the torpedo version?
Thanks all

One of my favorite kits. It includes parts for torpedoes, exteral bombs and the regular bomb doors. Although no interior detail is included for the bomb bay. A pe set would be a must if you want to display the doors open.

Nice Pit Dave...

I have not even looked at the Emil in a month...I figure to get cracking next month.  I am dropping the Aires engine ( Tanky you were right...Bow [bow]...ugh the "fit" )

I did pick up the Eagle Strike sheet...if any one wants some 1/72 109-E let me know...I certainly will not be using the entire sheet.

More progress pics. Fuselage buttoned up and cockpit inserted on my Spitfire MKI. Wings are not attached yet, just dry fitting, and the seams have also yet to be dressed. The glue visible in the bottom on the seat is not as noticable as the shot would lead you to believe. Yes, I know I need to improve my PE skills; the seat belts are a mess. But it was my first time, so please have mercy Wink [;)]

Joe & Tanky, I'm not an expert with Aires resin sets but I was thinking of getting their cockpit for the Do-335.  Is the fit that bad that they are unusable?

Dave your PE work looks just fine from where I'm sitting and as for the glue, a small dab with a flat coat should hide that.

Cheers

Darren,

my skills sets are such that the Aries at this point is not insurmountable, it is just not fun.  The detail is crisp and the instructions are pretty straight forward.  The chopping of the kit and getting it to fit are just beyond me at this time.

The kit is the Tamiya, so I fure why take a Cadillac and turn it into a Yugo?  I will probably do the engine as a sort of mini-kit may even scratch up a dolly for it.

Now for the funny bit, for the South Pacific build I got the P47 Razorback from Academy, with a full resin/PE set...yes you guessed it...Aries!

I've used a few of their sets and the fit is uniformly horrendous.

But they are not unusable at all. You just need to have lots of patience. The detail on these sets is astounding, and they are extremely well cast. The sets will fit in the kit they are meant for with enough work, and I've never had it where they physcially are impossble to fit. (It may seem like it, but it reall is possible. Wink [;)])

For example, the aires gunbays Im using on my spitifre did not fit in the wing at first, and when inserted lifted the wings apart by about 1/8 of an inch. I measure the interior space of the wings and the height of the gunbay and found that there is enough space- by less than half a millimeter- but there is. Even after extensive sadning, the wings have to be flexed over the gunbays and tenaxed, but it will work.

Sorry for the long winded response- I'm getting talkative in my old age (I just turned 16 yesterday) Wink [;)]Mischief [:-,]

Happy Birthday Tanky Cool [8D].  I sorta remember when I was 16 Smile [:)].

Ditto on the Aires detail sets.  Very nice castings, fitting them into the molded parts is usually a challenge.  Not impossible, just a lot of extra work.

Joe - you mentioned some ES decals for a 1/72 Emil?  I'd be more than happy to liberate some from you... which set are they?  I bought the Academy Bf-109 for this and while passable, their decals leave something to be desired...

Dave - great looking cockpit!!!  and don't worry about the glue, I'm a few PE sheets ahead of you but not much better on the glue bit.  I'm getting better at hiding the CA than using it more effectively... Wink [;)]

Darren - I saw that Do-335 interior set as well, I might wait and see your go at it before I throw caution to the wind haha..

I'm on break tonight from modeling.  We just started 4-10 shifts and my body is adjusting a bit.. I got the rest of the PE in the He111 cockpit and am just waiting to close her up.  I am debating on putting the side glass in before I close her to prevent an accident and a piece falling inside after it is already closed.  I have the Black Magic masks for this kit which include the side glass so I think it might be smarter.  I have to think it through and maybe leave of the glass with the gun ports on it to prevent breaking a MG.

Tom, I had the same problem with the guns on the Greif.

I ended up cutting the barrels off where they enter the glazing, just glueing the stock end into the glazing.

Once all the paintwork was done, I just went around and glued all the barrels back on.

Much easier, and a lot less stressful.

OK, who's a sucker for dramatic box art then?

Whistling [:-^]............that would be me.

Picked this up at the LHS today....

I'll still probably do the CR42, but this just looked so dramatic, especially after watching the opening sequence to Narnia.

What do you mean there are no He 111s in C.S.Lewis' work?

Not sure if I'll go with the KG27 scheme in the box, or get the AIMs He111 part 3 sheet.

Decisions, decisions!

OOO!!!! Excelent choice Karl! I really enjoyed that build for last years BoB. I also like your idea for adding the guns after the paint.

TOM and now Karl too: If I remember correctly I ended up adding the guns after painting my He 111 by working through the upper gunners position. (All except the nose gun of course. I simply repainted that afterwards.) Anyway, if you practise you'll find that with a good set of tweezers you can reach all the rear guns position from the hole in the topside of the He 111. A little white glue on the guns, poke them through their hole and your done.

I am home playing sick today after having a bad fever last night from a chest cold. I am feeling much better this afternoon so I am off to work on the JU 290 for the Atlantic GB.

Tanky: Happy Birthday!! 16 wow!

Dave: Nice pit, looking forward to more pics.

Bear: Is the garage door in standard Camoflauge pattern A or B?

Dave It's most definitly pattern A till the ministry of garage doors aka Mrs Bear confiscated the masking tape and handed me the mahoganyBig Smile [:D].  I hope your feeling better today, take care.

Karl/Dave & any other who's built the Hasa 111P how is it for fit etc i've got it lined up in my sights if the funds permit at the end of the month any info is appreciated.

Marc, I'm not starting mine till I finish the two Nieuports for the Allied Aces GB, which should be next week some time. Then I'll let you know.

Here's review by Joe Youngerman,. who also posts on this forum....

http://modelingmadness.com/reviews/axis/luft/youngerman111.htm

Looks like a fairly straightforward build.

If you're looking for a cheaper option, the Revell boxing of the H-6 kit is about £6 cheaper in the UK! Just make sure you're not getting the old Italeri kit in a Revell box.
