Sign - Ditto [#ditto]  I'm up to my eyeballs with a AM Avenger for the Atlantic build and really should start on my build for Jay's Allied Aces GB before I start here.  That and I'm waiting on my Ultracast seat for the 109.

Could you add me with a Boulton Paul Defiant MKI 1/48 please, and I look forward to my third build and my first group build.

woohoo Rob!!!  glad to have you aboard!  The last BoB Gb I wanted to build that Defiant but opted instead for a FAA Martlet Mk.I instead...  I still want to build one, one of these days..  I can imagine the eyes of the german pilots as they came down on these at night, thinking they were hurricanes... only to be bitten by the "stinger" on the end haha..

OK I'm back after a small work enforced absence.

Rob welcome to the build it's good to have you along.  Any ideas on what Defiant you are going to build?  As a day fighter they were wiped from the skies but as a night fighter they did manage some degree of success as Tom says.

Cheers

Good to see ya back Darren.. I have been on a limited internet budget lately too with work.  I've only had time to pop in and answer one or two topics before I have to pop off again...

wooo. just got back from noreastcon. I had some unprecedented luck at the raffle, and I won a fujimi 1/48 bf-109g-6, a CA 1/48 gloster meteor f.8, and a pro-modeler 1/48 Ta-154 for the price of 5$. (it may actually cancel out all the money i blew in the vendor room.)

Anyway, one purchase I was really happy with was this giant book on the BoB- it hs huge color maps of key engagements with squadron plane positions and various diagrams of air maneuvers and such. It includes a timeline of the battle and daily losses for each side during the entire engagement. It is about 200 pages long, hardcover and at only 5$ I couldn't pass it up.

Late to the party here, but any chance of joining in? Started a 1/48 Revell Spitfire Mk II last Wednesday as my re-introduction to the wonderful world of scale modeling after a 15+ plus year absence. Had originally planned on starting with a Trumpeter MiG 15bis, but decided to start with something a little less expensive. Anyway, would like to join up as long as no one minds having someone hanging about that doesn't have a clue. Here's a quick shot showing just how big of a mess someone can make of a Spit's office ;-) (still working on that top seam) -dave

Fixed it. Seems the forum software used here doesn't think much of some browsers, especially Safari. Works fine when I use Firefox.

I also did a spitfire as my first build after some 20 years although mine was the academy 1/48 Mk XIVc here is the post for the finished article http://www.finescale.com/FSM/CS/forums/620419/ShowPost.aspx, if I can pass on any tips I would be happy to as you may meet some of the problems I did on the build.

Dave - some filler putty should fix that seam right up... just mix it with abnout 10 drops of nail polish remover and get it to a pliant consistency and put it on the crack.. let it dry about an hour or more then start sanding lightly until it is flush to the body... it takes a bit of patience but well worth the effort...

Thanks for the tip Tom, I'll give it a try! Will Squadron White or Tamiya Basic work ok?

I haven't used the Tamiya basic but squadron white is good.  It has a finer grain than squadron green so it might take more than one shot to fill it... if the Tamiya basic is more gritty use that one first and if need be follow up with the squadron white.  The reason for the nail polish remover is it makes the p-utty more flowing and allows it to run into the gap easier and fill in one shot.  Don't use pure acetone to thin the putty as it might damage the plastic.  The nail polish remover will do fine.  I just use a toothpick and work the remover in that way until it feels about like sour cream...

Good luck!

Darren I'm glad to see your back I hope your feeling well.  Tom in referance to your tip on thinning putty do you know if the non acetone based nail polish remover would work ( that's what my wife uses) or does it need the acetone to have an effect.

Jay like your shed have you decided on a color scheme yetBig Smile [:D]

Dave23 Nice work on the Spit.

Here is a progress shot of my hurricane.  I've assembled the fuselage and wing assy I've also test fitted the cockpit to assy to the fuselage.  Next will be to assemble it all and start filling gaps hopefully that will be soon.  Mrs Bear injured her paw recently and now Bear has the domestic chores plus the reno work on the house so there is barely time to follow everyones progress (thank god for internet access at work).

Cheers

Good start on the 'cane Bear.  You need the acetone version BTW, that's what acts as a solvent for the putty.

Thanks Bear but my little adventure under the surgeons knife was a few weeks ago now and I've fully recovered.  What has been burying me completely is catching up at work, needless to say I haven't had any bench time at all in the last week and a half.  Sorry to hear about Mrs Bear, I hope she is up and about as soon as possible.

Great looking progress on the Hurricane btw, is that the Airfix kit?

Ok I've just updated the rosters on page one and wouldn't you know it I've missed out on Dave Angry [:(!].  No matter by the time you guys check it'll be fixed.

Dave welcome to the build I hope you have a good time.  Another great modeling tool that you can pick up are nail buffing/filing/polishing sticks which come in various grades and are easily obtainable at the local chemist.  Ahhh the joy of going shopping for modeling supplies and coming home with q-tips, nail polish remover and nail boards Big Smile [:D].

Rob you have every reason to be proud of that Spit it looks awesome, nice job Thumbs Up [tup].

Hi Darren I'm glad to hear all is good with you I know that feeling of playing catch up at work I hope you'll see your bench soon.  Mrs Bear is up and about, just can't do much as she's right handed and it's the hand in the cast.  She is perfecting her delegation skills though " Oh! Bear..."Big Smile [:D] .  Yup it's an Airfix kit and I will be stoping to pick up some nail polish remover and nail boards this one is going to need it.  I hope to assemle the pit, wings & fuselage tonight and possibly start filling some seems.

Cheers

Bear

Well after a system crash and rebuild of my harddrive I can happily say that most of my research pics have been deletedSigh [sigh]

Hopefully I'll be able to find the pic of the 109 I'm planning on making for this GB.

Darren could you email me that gif program you have if you have a moment or two please.

My classic airframes B.P Defiant arrived today and I have to say it looks rather nice on first inspection, lots of resin parts for the cockpit, wheelwells and gun turrret as well as some nice clear bits.

I should start work in a couple of weeks due to family stuff, I cant wait!

Just had a closer inspection and found more flash than I have evr seen and it seems the fusilage halves are from two different kits, is this normal? One of the wheelwells has a blob of resin where there should be detail as well, starting to think I might need all the advise I can get here.Confused [%-)]

David no problems and welcome to the build.  I've got to do a revised roster for page one anyway so I'll add you to the list.

Tom, ok I'm sitting here scratching my head, what is that flag in your avatar?

Darren - seems work had me a bit dazzled lately too... I totally missed out on this post.  It is the unit insignia the 42nd Bomb Group wore on the tails of their B-25's in WWII Pacific, S. Pacific etc.. was it you that mentioned you had some ref's on the 42nd BG?  I'll have to scroll back and see... after my He-111 I am going for a B-25 of that group as my great-uncle flew tail gunner for 16th months on em in the S. Pacific with the 42nd..

Classic Airframes kits are not for the faint of heart.  They look good in the box, but present a challenge on the bench.

ok .. the P-47 I was doing for the P-47 GB is doen and delivered to the classroom I promised it to... problem is I forgot to take pictures first...  Banged Head [banghead]  oh well...  That does mean I am ready to go in full swing on my He-111 and Bf-109 I worked up for this... It will probably be the 1/72 Academy Bf-109 as the P-47 almost took it out of me.. between working against the clock to finish it before school was out, to screwing it up once with some lacquer thinner it has sucked the modeling strength from me...

So... prepare to be talked senseless as I can devote my time to this now!!!!  And as our benevolent dictator.....::cough::... er.. leader Darren can tell you.. I CAN talk!! Wink [;)]

Tonight is my night off to relax... tomorrow I build!

curses. and there was me thinking that gloster meteor I won in the raffle looked like a fine and dandy little build. Wink [;)]

But I suppose with some elbow grease I might be able to tackle it...

Top seam of my Spit looking better thanks to Tom’s (Tho9900) tip on using putty thinned with nail polish remover as a filler. It’s not perfect by any means, but much improved.  Thanks Tom!

Never heard for sure, but I’m assuming it’s ok that I join the GB a bit late?
