Your FW 190 looks great Darren!  Your pre-shading and post shading looks awesome as well as your mottling!  Very nice work!  Big Smile [:D]

Thanks very much for the kind words guys, it's really appreciated Blush [:I].

I must admit I'm having a lot of fun with this build and so far everything is turning out OK.  The one thing that does worry me is that paint from the camo will have crept into the cockpit area and misted up the canopy.  Unfortunately that's something I'll only find out right at the very end.

Cheers

The dates etc. are just like the Pirates code.... it's just a guideline.  Technically the end date would be the end of June.  I'll be more than happy to keep this GB going for as long as people are interested in the subject matter and keep posting.

I've got so many Luftwaffe aircraft in my stash that I could build at least 10 more for this build, like my 1/32 Hasegawa kits - FW 190A8 and FW190D9... and even their 1/32 Japanese Frank.....

Many of us (myself included) have so much interest and enthusiasm, a ton of kits... but just not enough time.  Sigh [sigh] Wink [;)]

Joe thanks for the kind words.

The mottle on the side of the aircraft is done by using a 40/60 mix of paint and thinner sprayed at about 12psi.  What I did to achieve the results I wanted was to thin the paint enoungh so that it came out as a cloud with no splatter and then dropped the air preasure on my compressor until I was happy with the force the paint was being applied to the model.  I found that unless I did this the paint would appear on the model as a spot rather than the mist that I was looking for.  Then I just played around by spraying at various heights on to scrap paper the model until I was happy with the effect.

Thanks for sharing your mottling method Darson.  Mottling is one of the trickiest things to replicate, especially in 1/72 or 1/48 scale.  I'm just now starting to get the hang of it.  Smile [:)]

Thanks for the tip Darren!  I can try to use that technique on my Bf-109g.  I tried spraying through holes punched into cardstock on my fw190 for the BforG GB and it turned out okay but not really great.

Anyway, here is some progress on my Bf-109g for Eric Hartman, the silver one is a Bf109b1 for the Spanish Civil War GB.

I have updated the mottle technique a little from the post a couple above to make it hopefully a bit more readable, but one thing I didn't mention was that checking references is vital to an accurate job.  Have a look at this shot of Rommel & Priller inspecting Priller's A7 in 1944 and you will notice that there is definitely paint splatter around the blotches of RLM74.  In which case a mixture with less thinner possibly sprayed at a slightly higher pressure might be called for.

Jay the 109s are looking really cool Big Smile [:D].  One question I've got to ask is how are you going to spray the RLM02 into the wheel wells of the 109G now that the RLM76 is already down?

Cheers

Darren, there are these handy things called bristle brushes I use from time to time...Clown [:o)]

Sorry, dude, you walked into that one. Big Smile [:D] Seriously though, for small stuff like 1:72 I usually use brushes for areas like wheel wells and since it will get a light wash, most brush strokes will disappear and be hard to see anyway.

A little bit of masking and those wheel wells would be easy enough to spray.

I don't know about you guys, but I get almost as excited seeing pics of Bf109s as I do seeing Jennifer Anniston.... almost.  Blush [:I] Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

Jay, A brrrrrr, brrrr, brrrrush what the heck is that??? Wink [;)]

Ok I kinda did walk in to that one Laugh [(-D]

Scott I know what you mean (except the Jennifer Aniston thing) about the 109.  I managed to pick up Hasegawa's F4 Trop yesterday with Hans-Joachim Marseille decals and I am one happy camper.  I have been after Friedrich for my 109 collection for ages now and the Marseille decals are just icing on the cake.

I have also got an order with Great Models at the moment for the CA Bf 109D with Werner Molders markings and I can't wait for that one to arrive Thumbs Up [tup]

I'm going to have to pick up the Bf109D "Molders" kit as well.  I love these little CA early 109s.

I need to get my hands on some F series 109s, as that is the one major variant that is missing from my collection. Shock [:O]

Hey guys, I was looking over my list of GBs and noticed that this GB will be my next deadline.

I'm putting the finishing touches on my P-40E for the CBI build and will then shift my focus to the Bf109D for the Spanish Civil War build, and my two Bf109G's for this build.

So stay tuned for two projects from me starting in a matter of days.  Totally cool because I'm really into the Bf109 right now.  Cool [8D] Propeller [8-]

Scott, I noticed that too, but since it is still a few months away and I already have the RLM 76 on my BF109g for Hartman, I think I'll be have a muhc better chance to finish.  I'm in several other GB but they're all year long builds.

I'm afraid I haven't progressed at all on my Fw 190 over the last few days.  I do plan on clear coating it over the weekend so that I can begin my favorite stages of building; weathering and decaling Big Smile [:D].  To me the kit really comes alive once the decals go on.

hmmm... if you were the instruction sheet for my Eduard 1/32 Luftwaffe seatbelt set, where would you be?  Whistling [:-^]

I've got to stop hauling all my reference books and directions all over the place with me.  God only knows which book they're stuck in at the moment.  Shock [:O]

Scott-you can go to their website, www.eduard.cz , find the item and then usually view the instructions. That's how I decide if I want to purchase a set or not.

Thanks Bob, I had already tried that and that's one of the few the don't have.  I know I have it at home, somewhere stuck in one of my Bf109G reference books.  I was hoping to put them together at lunch today... no biggie, I'll do them tonight.  Smile [:)]

And now for something completely off topic,

Darren, I suppose you aren't related to a Hugh Millikin are you?  The World Curling Championships are being held in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada this year (just a few hours north of Calgary) and the Skip (Captain) for Australia is Hugh Millikin.  At first I was like, that's an unusual name, I've heard it somewhere before.  I doubt you are, as he was born in Canada (Vancouver) and moved to Australia in the late 80's.  He has been curling for Australia since 1991 and has done quite well over the years.

Sorry JB, close but no cigar Wink [;)] our surnames are similar but not the same, good memory though!  Btw how are your two 109s coming along?  Progress on my 190 has stalled for a few days now due to real life commitments but I am hoping to get some good bench time in over the Easter long weekend.

OOPS!, sorry Darren, Millikin, Minikin, so very sorry on the foot-in-mouth syndromDunce [D)].  I was like, hey I've heard that name before and when they said he was from Australia, I was like, Hey Darren has the same name and before I could double check, my fingers had hit the post button.  I guess close only counts in the game of horseshoes and hand grenades...

Scott, fantastic looking belts!, thats in 1:48 right?  amazing detail!

For Darren and anyone else, My 109's are still stalled, The modeling desk is still being used for storage.  Since we repainted our basement we also decided to finish off the stairs to the basement with all the trim and baseboards to make it look finished. Almost done and soon life will be back to as close to normal or what passes for "normal" in our housePirate [oX)]

Brits, Australians.... they all look alike.  Wink [;)]

Thanks Jay.  The belts are in 1/32 scale, which is a nice change of pace from the tiny 1/48 belts I did for my last two builds.  Shock [:O] Smile [:)]

Just about done with the belts, hope to install them on the seat tomorrow when I get home from work.
