I removed the injector tower from the seat of the Academy P-40B.  Not much, but, hey, it's something!  I'm also going to chuck in the Hobby Boss P-40 in America in China colours.  Took 10 minutes or so to assemble the kit, and no glue required!  Actually, not bad for detail, except interior is Frog or Airfix circa 1960

Osher, I believe you're further along than anyone else!  For myself, cockpit has interior green painted, but that's about it.

I will say it's nice building a P-40 again.  Sorta like coming home.

Well I have gotten started.  I am using the Eduard PE set for the Fujimi kit on a Hasegawa kit, slight fit issues, but no real big deal.

Question:  Were all IJAAF interiors the aotake?

I have started to make some camo masks, will try to post some pics of them soon.

No, actually very few were in Aotake.  Most were in various shades of Green, depending on the Manufacturer & time frame.

Thanks Rick, I painted this evening.  Using Tamiya Dark Green for the sidewalls and then Tamiya Olive Green for the "visible" bits.  I was trying to get a tonal difference, like a "sun faded" situation.

The kit is 1/72 so once the canopy goes on, most will be unfortunately lost.

I have cut out the masks completely now.  They are like a paper lace.  I believe it is commonly known that camouflage was field applied, but was there any sort of standard or recomended pattern?  I am affraid that since I drew these masks free hand I may be bordering on an almost "what if" sort of affair.

Tamiya Dark Green is a pretty good match for IJN AC from Mitsubishi.  Tamiya Cockpit Green is a pretty good match for IJAAF AC from Nakajima.

Can't help much on the masks.  I would work from photo references, or art work if no good photos were available, & do the camo freehand.

Rick's advice is sound, use old photos for reference.

Bottom line, if it's not a 100% accurate, but if you learned something and had fun, then you did it right Smile [:)]

Ive been trying my hand at free hand camo.  Last night I was painting my P-47 and the connection between my eye, brain and hand was severed and my hand went out on its own.  I must say that it looks nothing like I intended it to.  All that planning and running over how I would do it in my mind was thrown out by 1 stroke of my hand.   But the good thing is that there doesnt seem to be any photos of the right side of the plane so I guess Ill leave it as is and keep it as a inspiration to do better.

Edited for spelling LMAO I cant spell to save my @**

Living Legend, sorry to hear that!!!
Hey Tanky, just a quick question... when can we put the badge in our signature? Perhaps after we complete?
On a kit note... I plan on starting on my Mustang this weeked. I can't wait to fiddle with my resin interior!!!

I have to change my submission...go here to find out why.

http://www.finescale.com/FSM/CS/forums/684177/ShowPost.aspx#684177

I will go with a 1/144 Minicraft C47.  I know it seems like a cop out build but considering what just happened I have no energy left.

That's a real bummer Joe.  I did the same thing a few years ago on a nearly finished 1/48 Typhoon.

Progress: Cockpit is finished, fuselage is closed up, and wings and elevators are all together.  Now my least favorite part of a build, filling and sanding.  Thankfully, there are not many bad seams to deal with, just a couple due to the engineering of Hasegawa.

The Hasegawa P-40 is certainly more complex and fussy, but the detail is better than the simpler AmTech P-40's I usually build.

I have the little kit together now, quick and easy is nice after the spill disaster.  It seemed like a cop out build so I am going to try to paint the markings on instead of using decals.  Here is the plane I am going to attempt;

Would the colors be British Dark green on the upper and medium Sea Grey?

The roundel colors whould be fairly easy...I was thinking of Deep Sea Blue and Intermeadiate blue.

Made some progress on the Academy P-40C.  Kinda.  The resin interior is in (after much struggling)-seat turned out to be a disaster. And not enough is going to be visible to make it worthwhile, imho. The Cutting Edge seat was iffy at best-ordered an Ultracast seat-but I ordered the later (i.e., wrong) version.  Slightly different seat frame.  Was going to try to salavage the Cutting Edge seat and was not successful (a short story to be shared over beers sometime).  Thought about using the kit seat with PE belts, but decided to chop up the framing on the Ultracast seat and use it. Looks ok.

The gap between the wing & fuselage is about 1/8", +/-.  Debated on whether to continue or break out the Hasegawa P-40E (not an easy kit based on my first reviews of the instructions). Started to go over to my LHS and pickup the Monogram P-40B and do a quick OOB. Decided to stay the course and practice my 'gap filling skills'...might go over to the LHS if things don't progress well.

Bob

Yeah, stick with it.  An 1/8" gap isn't great, but it's not enough to throw in the towel on.

Good luck.

Hey guys. Just wanted to let everyone know that I have actually started!!
I Cut out the pieces of the resin cockpit. It was really simple. The pieces were really greasy so I washed them well. I've already lost a piece (the resin stick) and I replaced it with stretched sprue and the kit handle. I'm putting the Interior green in and I've been cutting out the flaps and gun bay. This is going to be very fun!

Progress (?) Minicraft 1/144 C47.

The national insignia are painted on...needs to be touched up. I am cutting balck decals for the windows, the kit clear parts were awful with flash and not at all clear.

Fun build, nice distraction.

Hey Joe, looks pretty nice. Looks like the OD is a little thin on the fuselage by the wings. How do you like painting the insignias? I think black decals will be fine... 1/144 is very tiny, you wouldnt be able to see in anyway. Glad this one's distracting you from other buildsSmile [:)]

a plane of that size  in that scale is not as tiny as you think

it is on par with some  1/48 scale planes
