I'm  still in the drydock stage myself due to a death in the family. (see post in Odds & Ends Busted up inside) Hopefully I can start building on this again soon.

Greg,

I am still being thankful about not having to get rid of deck planks.  I did that with most of deck on the1/72 scale Snowberry and it was a chore.  On a brighter note, I think the painting is as good as done and I am getting into final assembly on the Vosper.  I hope to have some more photos maybe by the end of the weekend.

Some Info Gleaned from Fast Fighting Boats, p.26-31

CMB04, as model, was Lt Agars' Boat, on 17th July 1919, entered Kronstadt Harbour & 4 Russian ships, inc 2 warships were sunk, at the cost of several CMB's.  56 were built, mostly 1917, by Thornycroft at 55' length. CMB02, currently on loan from Imperial War Museum, is 40' length.

I don't know any more on the MTB71, as there were far to many planes, tanks, MV's, models to see & photograph...... Tongue [:P]

Point noted, Hippy-Ed.

I forgot I recently got Photo-Bucket, so have up-loaded onto that as well.

The CMB06 (?? details TBC), were used against the Russians in 1919, I know this was written about in Fast Fighting Boats book, mentioned elsewhere in this thread, so will look up details asap.

FYI,
some photos from Duxford Air Museum 18th June'06,

MTB 71 (60' British MTB) This was a surprise!
The boat is in a poor shape, with lots of damage visible. There wasn't an observation platform available, so was unable to get better pics of deck.

Also CMB 02 & 04 (WW1 Torpedo boats)

Well, you couldn't have made a better choice...it is undoubtably one of the best ship kits out there!

Looking forward to seeing your progress.

Still haven't got started on my model for this GB as I need to clear some space on the workbench first (i.e finish some current builds)!
I'll almost certainly be building the Revell S-100. It's probably the most obvious choice but as I'm currently working on two other ship projects involving a lot of scratchbuilding (one entirely built from scratch), I'd rather pick something that can be built "out of the box" for a change!

Sorry Ed, no sympathy for sunburns or hangovers...both self induced! (at least that's what grandma always said...for me, I feel your pain. Sunburns suck)

I keep on trying to figure out the propulsion system for the hydrofoil, but haven't been able to find the  specs from 1945 that cover that area...lots of info on the foils, but nothing on the props! arrrgh.  Even though they are going to be covered by the water detail, I'd like to have something accurate (at least one thing on my kriegsmarine46 has to be right!)

Hi Garth

On the basis that your question is directed to me...

I have the hull of the Airfix BPB HSL assembled. I intend taking all the detailing off the deck and then building it probably as MASB37.

But then again...I have the deck of the Airfix Vosper sat in front on me, again with the intention of clearing all the detail off and building it as a Vosper Type 2. I have a bundle of goodies from Great Little Ships to fit it out, drawings of the QF 6pdr are all scaled to 1/72 ready to start scratchbuilding and I'm awaiting a parcel from John Lambert of plans with details of the Type 2.

As soon as I've made sensible progress and have something to show (on either) I shall start a thread.

I have to say I became a bit excited about the discussion in the Coastal Forces thread about RN Elco's and having spend a fair bit of time looking through ACF Vol 2, I set about seeing how easy it would be to convert the BPB HSL to a 70' Elco. Having scaled the plans of the Elco to 1/72, whilst the BPB and Elco appear very similar, the Elco is a much bigger boat in length and beam.  It would be easier to scratchbuild a hull for the Elco than convert the hull of the BPB.

Cheers

Al

Greg,

Yeah, HR's D/Cs are relatively good, despite their apparent age.  I've got them on one of the Revell PT kits that was built for me (in 1997) which is currently being rebuilt.  I'm quite sure that - thanks to modern technology could render better ones in resin.  But, they are "the only game in town" ..............

Must have missed that post...did a search with zero results, except a bit about Jeff Herne scratchbuilding some.  I wish WEM made more stuff for PT boats, the other company in Wales is nice, but the delivery time would be an issue...anyone out there have more information?

Greg, while going thru my old posts I found my answer. Garth had mentioned HR Productions has D/C Ash cans. See the thread on 1/72 toe railsBig Smile [:D]  Now HR Prod has been mentiond a few times in various threads. including mine. From what I've been hearing, their stuff is old & require alot of clean upSad [:(]

The only pic I've seen showing those loong tubes on top of the torp tubes is the one in the Chun's book of the completed model. I've been looking thru my references & that's all I could find.

**Edit**
Just did a goole Image search: Found this. HTH,  Eddie

Actually, I saw this drawing, forgot to mention this. But if you look at photo on page 19 of Vospers In Action, there are more "devices" on the upper side of the tubes (additionally, for me it seems like these tubes have larger gas-cylinders than MK19 torpedo tubes).

Are any additional photos available? It would be great to find photos made not from the front, but from the side of tubes.

Yes. I have visited PTBoatWorld and found no photos/drawings of this torpedo tybe type.

Ed, I will wait for results. I do not have ACF book unfortunately. Sad [:(]

I've skimmed thru ACF v.2 and did not see anything right off. I just got in from work & it's been a long day.  I see Al Ross made mention of a site & you may find what you're looking for there.Big Smile [:D] Let me know.

Yeah, the crews pretty much free reign to arm their boats - but the Ron C.O. had input too ... Admiral Harlee once told me that he didn't allow the 191 to get her 40mm until much later than the rest of Ron 12 because he didn't want to take her off the line to have the gun put on.

To illustrate how resourceful the crews were in scrounging weaponry, the crew of the 190 had - early on - a 37mm from a P-39 mounted on a Mk.10 or a Mk.14 mount where the original 20mm was placed (the same place where the 40mm went).

That bit of data came from Alex Johnson who got it from a crewman of the 190.

Guys, you should see two of my models being worked on now, one of which Alex is doing ... both of them are heavily armed boats.

the war in the south pacific was pretty much "catch as one can"...and the crews cannibalized all sorts of weird projectile weapons from burned out tanks and planes, or stole them from army bases, then fitted them onto their boats with tack welds and cut iron stands.  One of my favourites are the mortars that were fitted onto some PT's...that must have been something to see!

Is that what it's actually called? LOL

What I found amazing was the armament variations, boats outfitted with just about anything the crews could throw on it...Granted it was during wartime, but did these modifications get approval from elsewhere or did the crews just do it? Like cannibalizing crashed P-39's for cannons...
