Well,

None of my state libraries have these types of books, so I need to buy them.

Wink [;)] PT,
I'm having a blast reading through the one I've just got for US $0.00 from the library.... Smile [:)]
along with Hunnicuts' Sherman.... Big Smile [:D]
(UKP £350.00 on amazon for THAT!Shock [:O])

Under english law, we are permitted to copy up to 10% of single book, PROVIDED: academic research, or personal, non-commercial use only.

Of course, I buy the books I really really need, when available.... & that leaves me some money to spend on Italeri's vapour-ware ELCO!

I estimate, based on previous experience with Italeri, that with the given Release Date of October here in the UK,
I don't expect to see it generally available till after christmas holidays...

Here's a good question: which would be better... sanding the planks down on the deck or, filling them with putty? Confused [%-)]
I found the answer to my previous dilema on the torp tubes &  am sanding off all the detail from it but the nose & tail.
thanks y'allBig Smile [:D]

This should be a relatively easy conversion of the Airfix Vosper involving a bit of scratchbuilding and it has a fairly neat colour scheme (and I found an article in Airfix Magazine from October 1978 by John Lambert on the topic)

I really wanted to be a bit more ambitious but the time I have for modelling is limited and consequently trying to scrachbuilding the Fairmile 'D' within the timescale would be too optimistic.  I also fancied building a British Power Boat Co. MGB by converting the Airfix RAF Rescue Launch...I've not ruled that one out yet. So time permitting there may be two from me (he said...famous last words and all that!)

Jon,

If you intend to build a model that even hints at accuracy, you have a major challenge ahead with the Lindberg kit.  The basic shapes are wrong and the details are mostly spurious.  Depending on your scratch-building skills and bank account, you could produce any of the 80' boats with any given kit of an ELCO 80.   Take a look at the photos and drawings in Garth's "PT Boats in Action",  John Lambert and my "Allied Coastal Forces of WWII, vol. 2", or any of the other standard references (Chun, Johnson, Polmar, etc.) and you'll see what I mean.

As for any of the RN boats, the 80' hull does not even vaguely correspond with any of them.

If anyone involved with this Group Build is considering doing an 80 foot Elco with the Elco Thunderbolt mount (a quad 20mm) ... I have photos and a drawing of it that could be helpful.

Ed,

I've emailed Rob and gave him several resources, so he should be set to go.  I gave him the titles of at least five other books, other than my own, and I suggested that he check out the books that are available through the Ship's Store at www.ptboats.org

Rob, here's my favorite PT Boat site. You'll find alot of info there & also links to other sitesBig Smile [:D]
http://www.ptboatworld.com/models.htm

Also, a couple pages back I posted a link to a thread I'd started awhile back.
hth,
Eddie

You may even find books at the local library on PT Boats or through inter-library loan.  some places online you can find used books.
Think I paid $45 for Chun's Book & like $60 for ACF Vol.2 both well worth the costTongue [:P]

H20

Bang on Topic, mate!

I'm not a boat-bloke, but I have an interest in all things D-Day, so my main references are Armour related!

However: my local library has an english translation of a german book on Fast Boats... covering PT's, MTB's, S-Boats, MAS boats, etc... I will post exact title & ISBN tomorrow...

I also managed to order Hunnicuts' Sherman book from my library, (inter-county loan, cost about $4.00) & my local branch has the Hunnicut Bradley book on shelf!!!!!
These are not skinny monographs & command a hefty price, IF you can Find them..... (Amazon.co.uk list Sherman @ UKP £ 325.00 & Bradley @ UKP £65.00, read that & weep!)
Conclusion: Ask what your library can do for you! you just might be surprised!

(Hint: Futter's Funnies.... Bow <img src=" src="http://www.finescale.com/FSM/CS/emoticons/icon_smile_bow.gif">  it does exist, I have held the holy grail in my hands.... and i'm not worthy....)

What is everyone using for reference on this? I really don't have much knowledge on this subject but I don't want that to stop me. I don't have any books or anything like that to help me along on this. So does anyone have any suggestions for places to visit ( on the web ) or of any books?

I did find this book yesterday online : American PT boats in World War II by Victor Chun $40
That would help out if I go with the American line of boats.

SoapBox [soapbox]Sign - Off Topic!! [#offtopic]
I can't believe some of these book prices! Some of these historical books are OUTRAGEOUSLY priced and that's not even counting the ones that are directly marketed to the modelling/modelers industry. Yet if I wanted to go buy some book about the latest Hollywood romances or a hardback romance novel ( yeah right! ) those books are dime a dozen! Just seems to me that the books which increase brain activity and learning are expensive, while books that probably decrease brain activity while reading are dirt cheap! LOL

Sorry for the included rant, didn't mean to derail the thread!

Well the first day of the build has passed and I'm still boat less! I went by the hobby store to see what I could find, not much! They had the 109 boat but for almost $30 I about hit the deck when I saw that price! Well Hobby Lobby has that same exact kit for 1/2 that price. I didn't get a chance to go by there yesterday and I probably wont today. So I came home and did some digging around on the net and found all I need. I just need to pick a kit and order it. I have 3 finalists...

1/72 PT 117 Revell AG $10.84

1/72 S100 Revell AG $22.95

1/72 VOSPER Tamiya $49.00

That has got to be the most violent shade of blue ever to singe retinas! Yuck [yuck]Blindfold [X-)]

As a homework question for the reader (that's you knowledgeable boat blokes):

Could Lindberg's 1/32 scale PT109 Hull be used for other versions? ie up to which pennant number? I fancy a 40mm Bofors in there somewhere...

Or maybe a Fairmile and/or UK-based boat? I am especially fond of D-day related material, & have had Fairmile HDML plans since the 80's on my to to list....
(....Sign - Off Topic!! [#offtopic].... but i've yet to persuade my EX to divorce my bill-fold as well as me....)

Have fun

I've been sanding the deck of my 109, removing the torp mounts, hatches as well. I'm still trying to figure out the torp tubes. Do I sand everything but the nose & tail & the main brackets/mounts on the bottom?
