Just waiting for my kit to arrive.  By the time it gets here I will be done with my Battle of Britain project and a good way into my Axis Aces build.  I'm planning on building the Bf109A at the same time I do my P-38F for the South Pacific build.  I hope I can keep the momentum going, it's been great to finally get some modeling time in here and there.  Pirate [oX)]

By the way, the Spanish Civil War book I'm reading by Anthony Beevor is excellent.  I had no idea how complex the situation was and had been in Spain leading up to the conflict.  Interesting stuff.  Cool [8D]

Scott, front page updated.

U-96, nice job on the pit. That Academy pit is very nice straight from the box.

Rudy, not too worry. If the situation improves, feel free to hop back in.

Nothing doing from me, still busy with an Emil for the BoB GB.

Looking like I'll be going with the old Airfix Fiat G-50.

I got some bad news, boys. My GB joining spree resulted in to much purchases to catch up on, and not enough allowance money to catch up on it. I'm dropping out of this GB until further notice.

Question:

How can plastic be thick and soft but also very brittle?  The Huma Ar68 is going to be a challenge.  I have dry fitted and put aside the Squadron Green and taken up the casting resin and plastic card for  gap filler.  I hope to have some postable progress photos soon...

thanks folks, you are too generous.

Lesson learned: don't look at other people's models for research. There's no guarantee they did any more than you Wink [;)]

Hint: that's a trim wheel, not a stopcock. Resist the urge to paint it red.

Useful product of the day: After years of Humbrol filler (bad) and Squadron green (better), I now worship the ground Mr Surfacer walks upon.

The cockpit is pretty much done. I'm not a huge fan of pits, so I usually get 'em out of the way quickly so I can get on with the fun stuff. Smile [:)]

If I was doing open canopy, I might be a little more careful, and would consider removing the moulded belts and make some better ones, but on the whole, it's not too bad...

Ok, it's official.  I had Tom at my LHS (High Sierra Models) order me the Classic Airframes 1/48 Bf109A kit.  I should have my bench clear by the time it arrives and will get to work!  Smile [:)]

Hey guys, I just started reading "The Spanish Civil War' by Anthony Beevor.  If it's anything like the other two books of his I've read ("Stalingrad", and "The Fall of Berlin") then it should be a good read.

Also, I'm trying to get my hands on a 1/48 Classic Airframes Bf109A kit for this build (instead of doing the I-16 I picked up recently).  I'm still really into the Bf109 lately.  Cool [8D]

Quailane, these aircraft faded quite heavily over time, so the faded approach to the upper surfaces would be spot on.

The discussion on NMF vs RLM 63 vs RLM02 is sure to run and run. There is also the view that they were painted aluminium, just to confuse matters further!

As far as colors, I am not really sure.

For my ar-68 I am doing either all rlm 63 or lightened rlm 02. Testor's rlm 02 is just too dark for me to accept in all the b&w photos I have seen. I may do rlm 02 on the undersides and a lightened rlm 02 on the tops and sides.

For my  bf-109b, I am thinking of either doing 6*56 in rlm 02 over 65 or doing 6*1 in rlm 63. I can't accept that it was all a nmf.

For those building Luftwaffe-sourced fighters, are you using the RLM02/65 scheme suggested by Ken Merrick's work, or are you sticking with the traditionally-used grey or tan schemes?

I'll probably go for the former, but it'll need a fair bit of lightening or fading, as these Xtracrylics seem quite dark for the scale.

Oh, and if anyone has a colour cockpit photo or two, that would be very helpful! Wink [;)]

U-96, glad to hear the decals turned up.

Well it's October first, which means this GB has officially started.

I haven't picked up a kit yet, but have chosen ICM's 1-15 Chato to start things rolling with.

Let the builds begin!

KJ200 - decals safely received, many thanks. They are much, much better than the kit ones - very good of you to think I could use them. If it turns out in this build that anyone wants the Luftwaffe markings, I'll be sure to offer them up.

Just got to coat and decal my A-37, and then when my paint arrives, full steam ahead on the 109D!

Rudy, I'll add you to the front page as a maybe.

The Blitz was the He 70, though the 112 took part as well.

I was looking at the possibility of doing an he 70  a while back, as there are some good colour schemes available, especially the white and blue 'sun burst' markings.

U-96, nothing to stop you picking up another T-26!

cool, thanks! now just waiting for my re-stock of RLM02 to arrive. I'm really looking forward to this build, and seeing what others will come up with - there's plenty of 109s for comparison, and quite a few exotics too!

Perfect GB Smile [:)]

Shame it didn't come early enough to paint my T-26 for it Wink [;)]

KJ200- Put me down for the classic airframes Ar-68E and Bf-109B. I don't think I have the nerve to do a kit more expensive.

U-96, I know Howes only too well!

I was in there the other weekend picking up the new Tamiya 1/48 Beetle.

I'm always amazed at the range of kits they have considering they specialise in trains and RC.

Drop me a mail with your address and I'll put the decs in the post.

I've had some bad experiences with Academy decs in the past.

In terms opf compressors what's your budget?

My first comp I bought from this lot:

http://www.maywoodgroup.co.uk/Compressors/SearchResult.aspx?categoryID=15

Picked up a Werther 3, which ran fine till I dropped it off a table!

Now run one of these:

http://www.expotools.co.uk/532_1_1314096.html

Got mine for about £200 from Modelsforsale.com.

Excellent comp, and very quiet.

thanks for the welcome KJ200 - believe it or not, I'm about 10-15miles from you! I'll wager you've been to Howe's in Kidlington a few times Wink [;)] I know they're mostly RC and trains these days, but still good for common supplies.

I did wonder about the decals - they seem to have a fuzzy/ragged edge to them - wasn't sure if that was deliberate or not. If your leftovers are anything but 6O79 I might be up for it! Kind of you to offer, maybe I can find something to trade.

U-96, welcome to the GB, you've picked a good kit.

I built the same kit last year, but used a set of Cutting Edge decals for a machine based in Norway in 1940.

My advice would be to ditch the kit decals, as they are fairly poor quality. I actually have the a set of Spanish Civil War markings from the Cutting Edge sheet if your interested.

BTW, where in the UK are you?

I'll update the front page.
