Hi folks! Mind if I hop into this GB?

I have the Academy 1/48 Bf-109D and this looks like a good opportunity to build it. It's also only the second 1/48 plane I've built, so it could be interesting. I'll probably go for the scheme that isn't Molders - everyone seems to do that one! Wink [;)]

I'm planning on getting a compressor and I'm out of gas so it might be a while before I start in earnest!

Here's a pic of the kit...

On the bench: 1/35 Dragon Sturmpanzer Late Recent: Academy 1/48 Bf-109D (Nov 06) Academy 1/72 A-37 (Oct 06) Revell 1/72 Merkava III (Aug 06) Italeri 1/35 T-26 (Aug 06)

I'm still surprised at the deep differences and rivalries between the various parts of Spain, having friends who are Basque & Catalan, both very much Republican areas, they are intensely proud of their respective areas.

Strange that you both mention the P-26, as I have the Hasa 1/32 kit in the stash, which I had considered for this GB, but seeing as I don't fancy an NMF, I think I'll put that aside.

Solid: I had a lot of family who fought and died in the war, and our current feelings are split between sides. My family is split between wanting to leave it and wanting to tear the whole place down, but some of us make the trip to the valle de los caidos once a year. Some of us like nothing better than to step on his grave, but I'm not one of them even though I hate him. I know of the exact whereabouts of the war dead related to me, which is fortunate.

Anyway, when I am in Spain, I live in Getafe, the "birthplace of Spanish avation." My grandparents settled there after my mother was born in a neighborhood called Juan de la Cierva, after the inventor of the autogyro who used to live there. Also it is where the only boeing P-26 to serve in Spain crashed after a dogfight in the battle for Madrid. I even got my first glimpse of the airbus A380 taking off there.

The first badge looks good to me.  Don't forget the Forum restrictions on GB badge sizes.

Karl...Happy you liked the badge. Yes, the Civil war devided the Spaniards badly, like you say, even today there is a shadow of it in Spain. I go to Spain every two years and you have to be careful when you talk about it for the factions are still brewing, many " grandfathers" of today were killed there, so the third generation, which today are around 60|-70 years old still are bitter. To many it is an insult to go to Franco's grave, " El valle de los Caidos", and not many tourists go....a very "cold" and sad place for it was built by prisoners of war!!!!! for Franco!!!...............but Spain is just beautiful and the people are fantastic, very kind and willing to help any way they can.. Love the place.

You are so right on the air war. All kinds of planes flew there and so many wonderful air stories!!!!I have many books full of great tales and good photos. The air war was "intensive" to say the least, both Germany and Italy brought in all kinds of planes and the Republicans put out everything they had. The Boeing P-26 was there, as well as some Fairchilds and Wacos....you name it, it probably flew the skies. And as you know it was a testing ground for the Luftwaffe. I hope to make an 1/48 scale HE 45 sometime in the future. So thanks to you for the great, Group Build............." No pasaran"

Gera, like the badge.

I'd be inclined to go for the smaller one.

I work with a number of Spaniards, and even at this distance in time, the civil war still casts a shadow.

One of them has a medallion of Franco on their desk, while others abhor the very mention of the man.

The thing that stands out most to me with regard the air war, was the variety of machines pressed into service by both sides.

There are many old posters and pictures....I modified this one>

Here are two sizes>

This is a little bit more meaningful!!!!! Pasted all over Madrid in 1937... "No Pasaran".or "They will never pass".....

As you probably have read, the war was very bloody and very hard on all Spaniards.....The air war was very interesting and "fierce" there are many books about it and takes years to read. Understanding it is very interesting and incredible stories came about.......the "Chato" was outstanding, but so many planes flew in it that also gave a good battle. The Italian Cr/32 was the F-16 of its day!!!!!

Thanks

My original idea for a badge was the very same poster that you have in your sig, but I've been looking at the following site for inspiration:

Thanks

Quailane & Osher welcome aboard. Sign - Welcome [#welcome]

Dave, Scott & Gera, front page duly updated.

Looks like we're going to get some interesting builds.

Still pondering the Do 17E, but leaning towards the old Airfix 1/72 Fiat G50, and ICM's I-15 in the same scale.

And yes I do need to sort a badge out pretty sharpish.

I opened the Huma kit to take a peak...wow.  Though I have never built a limited run kit, I have the feeling I am about too...

No location pins, thick and soft plastic and LOTS of flash...

Note to self...get Squadron Green and a gross of sanding sticks....

Shouldn't be too difficult to mask and paint.

Karl

I see what you mean, I've been looking at some color profiles and photographs and I might be able to get away with that approach.  The only gotcha might be any personalized markings, but other than that you're right about being able to mask and paint most of it.

Currently looks like I'll kick off this GB with the Bilek rebox of the old Airfix Dorner 17E.

I last built that kit when I was about 12!

Really need to sort a badge out.

Put me down for a 1/32 Special Hobby Polikarpov I-16 type 10.  Smile [:)]

I read a review of the kit recently and it stated it had 3 sets markings in Soviet Service and 1 set from the Spanish Civil War.  I just opened the kit and it only had the Soviet Markings.  Sad [:(]   Hopefully I can track down some aftermarket decals for this kit.

Hi Karl and everyone:
I will be scratchbuilding  the "Dewoitine 510" used by the Nationalists. If time allows I will add the
DH-89 used by Franco to "sneak" into Spain from Morocco.

Hey Karl, you can put me down for a 1/72 Supermodel Fiat Cr 32. I also have a Heller He 112 B in the stash and couldn't decide but all the great photos of the Cr 32 in the site Gera gave us sealed it for me. I won't be able to start until January though.

That kit looks nice Karl.  I don't know that much about the Spanish Civil War, but am beginning my research, so as long as the Type 10 was there, I will build that Eduard kit.  Smile [:)]

Hey Karl,

I may want to add an Arado 68.  I just picked up the Huma kit.  Depending on what is in the box will determine wwther or not I include it.

Absolutely!  Fringe forgives all!

Any suggestions on colour charts for this build, I am thinking as a pre-war the codes may not be the same, especially for in-theatre applications.

Joe, that wasn't a review, that was an add for Tamiya putty!

But I'm sure a few lengths of fringe would cover any gaps.Wink [;)]
