Spanish Civil War GB.

Put me down for a 1/32 Special Hobby Polikarpov I-16 type 10. 

I read a review of the kit recently and it stated it had 3 sets markings in Soviet Service and 1 set from the Spanish Civil War.  I just opened the kit and it only had the Soviet Markings.     Hopefully I can track down some aftermarket decals for this kit.

I see what you mean, I've been looking at some color profiles and photographs and I might be able to get away with that approach.  The only gotcha might be any personalized markings, but other than that you're right about being able to mask and paint most of it.

I opened the Huma kit to take a peak...wow.  Though I have never built a limited run kit, I have the feeling I am about too...

No location pins, thick and soft plastic and LOTS of flash...

Note to self...get Squadron Green and a gross of sanding sticks....

This is a little bit more meaningful!!!!! Pasted all over Madrid in 1937... "No Pasaran".or "They will never pass".....

As you probably have read, the war was very bloody and very hard on all Spaniards.....The air war was very interesting and "fierce" there are many books about it and takes years to read. Understanding it is very interesting and incredible stories came about.......the "Chato" was outstanding, but so many planes flew in it that also gave a good battle. The Italian Cr/32 was the F-16 of its day!!!!!

Karl...Happy you liked the badge. Yes, the Civil war devided the Spaniards badly, like you say, even today there is a shadow of it in Spain. I go to Spain every two years and you have to be careful when you talk about it for the factions are still brewing, many " grandfathers" of today were killed there, so the third generation, which today are around 60|-70 years old still are bitter. To many it is an insult to go to Franco's grave, " El valle de los Caidos", and not many tourists go....a very "cold" and sad place for it was built by prisoners of war!!!!! for Franco!!!...............but Spain is just beautiful and the people are fantastic, very kind and willing to help any way they can.. Love the place.

You are so right on the air war. All kinds of planes flew there and so many wonderful air stories!!!!I have many books full of great tales and good photos. The air war was "intensive" to say the least, both Germany and Italy brought in all kinds of planes and the Republicans put out everything they had. The Boeing P-26 was there, as well as some Fairchilds and Wacos....you name it, it probably flew the skies. And as you know it was a testing ground for the Luftwaffe. I hope to make an 1/48 scale HE 45 sometime in the future. So thanks to you for the great, Group Build............." No pasaran"

Hi folks! Mind if I hop into this GB?

I have the Academy 1/48 Bf-109D and this looks like a good opportunity to build it. It's also only the second 1/48 plane I've built, so it could be interesting. I'll probably go for the scheme that isn't Molders - everyone seems to do that one!

 I'm planning on getting a compressor and I'm out of gas so it might be a while before I start in earnest!

U-96, welcome to the GB, you've picked a good kit.

I built the same kit last year, but used a set of Cutting Edge decals for a machine based in Norway in 1940. 

My advice would be to ditch the kit decals, as they are fairly poor quality. I actually have the a set of Spanish Civil War markings from the Cutting Edge sheet if your interested.

BTW, where in the UK are you?

thanks for the welcome KJ200 - believe it or not, I'm about 10-15miles from you! I'll wager you've been to Howe's in Kidlington a few times I know they're mostly RC and trains these days, but still good for common supplies.

I did wonder about the decals - they seem to have a fuzzy/ragged edge to them - wasn't sure if that was deliberate or not. If your leftovers are anything but 6O79 I might be up for it! Kind of you to offer, maybe I can find something to trade.

I was in there the other weekend picking up the new Tamiya 1/48 Beetle.

I'm always amazed at the range of kits they have considering they specialise in trains and RC.

KJ200 - decals safely received, many thanks. They are much, much better than the kit ones - very good of you to think I could use them. If it turns out in this build that anyone wants the Luftwaffe markings, I'll be sure to offer them up.

Just got to coat and decal my A-37, and then when my paint arrives, full steam ahead on the 109D!

For those building Luftwaffe-sourced fighters, are you using the RLM02/65 scheme suggested by Ken Merrick's work, or are you sticking with the traditionally-used grey or tan schemes?

I'll probably go for the former, but it'll need a fair bit of lightening or fading, as these Xtracrylics seem quite dark for the scale.

Oh, and if anyone has a colour cockpit photo or two, that would be very helpful!
