I'm interested in this GB, I'm suprised to see fans of Jolly Rogers, I happen to think that it is the best paint scheme ever to adorn a vertical stabilizer.  On the shelf right now I have:

1/48 Hasegawa F-14 JR last flight (I could really use the small decal and paint instructions, I think my wife accidently tossed it if anyone could help me with that....).  This kit is about 60%complete.

1/48 Hasegawa F-18 Superhornet.  Not started.

Oh yeah.  I'm in, never done a group build before.  Does it matter that my F-14 is 60% done?.  I've got My Superbug that I've been looking for an excuse to start.

I'm working on the instruction sheet for you. Hopefully one here has it already, but I have sources. They just take a bit to get themselves togetherConfused [%-)]

Copy the gb badge to your pic files and download it into your photobucket or whatever account. Then add to your sig in profile to display when you post.

Pardon my ignorance, the GB badge is the JR Flag?

To Frank: I've been trying to find that F-4 JR kit everywhere!  Is that an older "shelf kit?"  If not where did you find it?

Great Models doesn't have it and Squadron has a pretty picture but no kit.

No pardons needed. Yup it is. If you need help in getting all together, pm (private message, PM icon at the bottom of my post) me and we'll get you going.

I found it on a dusty shelf in a LHS back in May. I bought that one, and they had a Hasegawa A-1H that included the Hasegawa bombs and rocket pods. I cleaned the joint out Evil [}:)]

You can get JR decals for an F-4J on Aeromaster Sheet 72-191: Phancy Phantoms, Pt VI, which is widely available. Hasegawa has also just rereleased their F-4J, which is awesome news. Microscale Sheet 720823 has VF-84 markings for an F-4B. But for an F-4N, I think that kit was the only game in town. They do show up on e-bay every once and a while, but usually go at a premium.

Thanks!  I found the decals on Great Models, Now I just need to add a few letters to my F-4J dusting my shelf to make it a F-4N...

Found these two pics from the nat's in Kansas. A friend of mine was there and said they were stunning. I pulled these from another site so we can all get inspired. I have no idea what scale they are.

hey minihasek can you change my 1/48 build to another 1/72. so that you will have to f-18 f coming from me instead. only thing i am waiting for is some new decals to come out for the jr squardon and they should be out in a few weeks.. i have both kits all ready with all my after market goodies ready to go.

Allrighty then... With some terror of the unknown in the back of my head, I actually got so far as opening the box yesterday morning. Just to see I actually ordered an Aires (I think?) cockpit set as well, so this will be joining the build. Few funnies: Is it normal for these resin parts to have a base still attached to it that must still be taken off? Also - I have a F-14A Plus booklet included for a F-14B model. Oh well, can't imagine the build being all that different. If somebody would be kind enough to point it out, I'll be very happy.

Have not done a thing except giving the resin it's wash. Sat around yesterday evening thinking how weird it feels not to have a plan how to tackle the model. Think it's been 10 years since my last plane build and with auto's I have some places where I know how to multiprocess the thing. But no worries, will sort it out - plans are allready starting to form.

The last tjhing I can't make my mind up about, is the actual markings. Included in my kit - 3 versions. 60th anniv, CAG bird and a low-viz scheme. Decisions, decisions... Will either be 60th anniv or low-viz, I think, since I want to build VF84's as a high-viz scheme (just seems right that way!) and the F/A-18 has a high-viz scheme as well. Unless I go mad and get myself the "final flight" decals from somewhere - what has changed there?

Having seen the two inspirational pics did now do my selfconfidence much good, though! Great builds...

well for the f-18 the tail codes have changed from AA to AG and if you can waite for it thier will be 2 decals sets coming out by hobbydecals and vf-decals i am drooling all over the ones by hobby decals. his sheet will include enough to build every plane in the squadron and even enough decals to have it done  with the new paint scheme for the jr hornet. so go over to the arc site (aircraft resource center) and look under manfutures section. this is all that i can help with the f-18.also thier are plenty of after market goodies for the f version and E version of the f-18 in 1/48 and 1/72.

-Ain't that the truth.  I had to dust off the ol' visa and spend some time on the computer getting the 1/48 Hasegawa F-14 Atlantic Fleet from great models.  I figured I'd need another shot to match the quality of that F-14 in the pic.  Also, I'm kicking around the idea of trying some resin details for this kit.  Particularly the ejection seats.  On my JR last flight that I'm doing now I used an Eduard detail set on the cockpit and was happy with the results, but figured I'd try something other than photoetch.  Any advice on a resin maker I should try?

well first yes the resin parts come on a stub that has to be removed

second, the f-14a(plus) is the same thing as the f-14b...well sorta... initiallly there was an f-14b but it was cancelled in favor of updating current A's.. thats where the f-14a (plus) came from...eventually the governing powers decided to call the (a+) a (b)...so its pretty much the same plane.

third itll look great either way you decide

Thanks for the info! Haven't had much time thusfar this week, just had a quick peek at the instruction pages for the cockpit set... jeez, there seem to be a lot to remove! They did indicate it very nicely on the instructions. Yet again, if all else fails... Will most likely have a grab at the rotary tool to get rid of everything - filing will take me up to the end of the GB! Wink [;)]

DiscoStu : you mentioned you're building (getting) a 48th Atl Fleet version. Is it at all possible to scan me the decal instructions for the VF84 options. I have the kit, but a Pacific fleet instruction booklet! No worries for the build, but the decalling...

Thanks! If scanning is an issue, you can either take a photo or just describe the differences to me in text. Should only be tail fins (inside & out), plane number, squad number (eg. 201) and people involved with that specific plane. And I think you need not even bother with the low-viz scheme - that one will be high-viz for sure!

Again - I really appreciate it a lot! Thumbs Up [tup]

I'm also going to do an F-4J in VF-84 markings, if thats ok. Living Legend is doing the F-4N...so if anyone knows where I can get SuperScale Sheet 72-823, let me know, and I'll do an F-4B also.

I don't have SuperScale's sheet but I did get a "Bank error in my favor" and Squadron sent me two sets of Aeromaster's VF-84 F-4J JR set. What's a few letters amongst nitpicking detail freaks like us?

Best of luck! Get back as soon as you can...

Update: I won the Superscale 72-823 decal sheet on e-bay last night for $5.50 (not bad!), so now I can do an F-4B also.

I was just catching up on my reading as I have been spending a lot of time on my bike lately racking up some miles before a refueling outage at work next month.  Anyway, it sounds as though the group has been keeping itself busy preparing for their builds with lots of research and acquiring parts and decals.

I did notice a couple of resin questions, and although I am no expert, I do have some experience with these parts.  For the person who asked, I purchaed the Verlinden 1/72 detail set several years ago, and I think that it is a very good one.  For the person who asked about the excess resin on the parts, yes, this is very common on parts no matter who the manufacturer is.  Some companies just seem to make it easier to remove than others though.

DiscoStu: Thanks for the scan! Will help a lot.

Scotty, that would be me (the 2nd asker). Started removing some of those excess resin over the weekend... what a miserable job! Still have the lenth of the main "tub" to go, which I'll more likely take a file to. Still think this cockpit set is going to take me longer than the rest of the model!

hey guys just a quick update...I combined the two kits and i wound up with a pretty good b model and an alright a model...i also started some work on the b. In order for me to put a phoenix and a lantrin pod on the wingglove pylons, i had to remove both of the premolded sparrows from them. so the pylons are all set up for some sanding and filling. also i opened up the boarding ladder compartment and ill see if i can get the foot steps open. next i start on the cockpit. lets see what else i can chop up Evil [}:)]
