I just posted these photos from last night on the Farewell F-14 group build, but I will show them here as well.  The body, wings, and small pieces have all been painted their gloss gull gray color. I will work on decals and a wash next, then sealing everything with a clear coat and adding the small parts.

The ejection seats are from True Details.

This is how the cockpit turned out.  Obviously I have not done any work on the window sills yet.

A side shot with the seats temporarily installed.

The afterburners/exhausts.  I used mostly Model Master metalizer paints for this.

As I am now off until January 2, I plan on getting some more progress while I am at home.  If anyone has any questions on how I accomplished what I have done so far, or what paints I used, just ask.

Merry Christmas to all!

Looking good Scott! Those engines look great.

I have been working slowly on the tomcat. It's been tough to work on it. The motivation to model kinda went away. Will hopefully get more going in the next few days. I have been puttering away on it bit at a time. Most all sub assemblies are ready to paint. All have been primed and lightly sanded. I just hate painting white!!

Take this plastic and model it!

Just when I was starting to wonder what happened to everyone...

I finished up my F-14 on New Year's Eve thereby completing a whopping total of ten kits for 2006.  Anyway, here are the results of my labor.  Let me know if you have any questions or comments as I will continue to look in on the group.

well guys i have a snafu to report. well i got the 2 hornets striped last weekend. and had something crazy happen. i used easy off oven cleaner to remove the paint and then gave both of the hornets a long good cleaning i thought. well i finally got to repaint them this weekend and something strange happend. while painting them i notice the paint wouldnt stick. so i kept on spraying both of them. well after getting them done i set them aside to dry. and came back a few hours later and both of them has gone crazyied and has etched its self into the plastic. thier is no way i can save either one of the hornets. the only thing i can save is the cockpits . so what i will do is order me a 1/48 f-18 hornet and do that for the group build. i wish i had my camera working were i can sow you what has happend.

I was beginning to wonder the same thing.  As for my progress, I have finally gotten my workbench set up and have begun work again.  The F-4 is just one paint-spray away from being done, yet I can't find the motivation (That and I have had a checkered-past when it comes to masking metal finishes.)  In the meantime, as I wait out my cowardice, I have gotten the F-18 detailed and ready for painting.  I decided to do this one closed canopy as my F-14, and F-4 are both open and I wanted it to look a little different.  Pictures soon to follow.

Finally!  I mustered up the courage to mask the metal finish on the horizontal stabs to get that one little stripe.  Kit is DONE!  As for the other two:  The F-18 is ready for painting, but I'm trying to finish some side projects (A Yak-1 and a Scorpion for some friends).  My F-14 suffered an accident as I set it on a table to get it out of the way and the dog decided to come and see me and she knocked it off the little table with her tail!  Minor damage:  Broken nose gear and the nose cone came off but everything else seems fine.

I was wondering (and hoping no one would) when someone would notice that.  The chevrons are supposed to point up.  The stripe that has them pointing down is the result of me doing the decals during a Broncos game.  I wasn't paying any attention to what I was doing.  I got one side right but the other was incorrect.  The Decals are a two-parter with the black going down first.  After letting that one set I noticed I had done it wrong.  As a result I had to do the yellow the same way.  Needless to say it won't win any awards, but the spirit is there.

Discostu,

I wasn't going to bring up the chevron thing, just so you know.  Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

The Phantom looks phantastic! Bow [bow]  I built the 1/72 version by Hasegawa several years ago, and remember the "fun" associated with decal placement.  To my advantage though, the side markings were single decals, not multiple parts as you have described.

On a separate issue, I picked up the Dragon 1/144 Jolly Rogers F-14 and F/A-18 combo kit recently.  The parts and decals look pretty good, and I may attempt to build it up at some point in the not too distant future for this build.  Of course with Spring hopefully about to arrive in my area Make a Toast [#toast], I am hearing the longing "voice" of my road bike wanting to get back out and accumulate miles once again.

Hey alll, I was wondering if anyone might be able to help me with this little problem:  I won a Tamiya F-15A on eBay, and while the kit is in great shape, the instructions are all in Japanese.  Having spent most of my time on Navy and Marine aircraft (Because, lets face it, they have cooler planes.  A-10 not withstanding.) I am at a loss as to the two-tone paint scheme on the eagle.  My LHS happened to carry MM F-15 dark gray, but just what is the lighter shade.  I tried posting this on the aircraft forum but got nothing.  Any help would be appreciated.  Funny thing is I have no plans to start this kit, but it's nice to know that when I do, I have the paints for it.

Disco Stu,

I thought that the Air Force used Light Ghost Gray as the lighter gray on the F-15.  I will do some checking in my resources to verify this.

Thank you.  That'll really help when I decide to start work on that Tomcat Wannabe. (Navy family.  Sorry.)

Yet another paint related question.  At least this time it is directly related to the GB.  I was about to lay down the first coat of the underside color of the Superhornet when I realized I don't have any H-308 Gray in my Gunze collection.  Since Hasegawa never likes to be more specific I was wondering if anyone out there knew what 308 translates to in either Tamiya, Polly Scale or MM?  I'm hoping I have a variant already in a different manufacturer so I can get this modeling bane painted right away.  I do have all the Gulls, Ghosts, sea, sky, old-man, Mediums, lights, darks, and plaids that they make, so I'm bound to have this elusive 308.  I'd hate to have to put in an order for one jar.

Nevermind.  I matched the FS# to MM Light Ghost Gray.  My itchy airbrush finger is satisfied.

DiscoStu,

Just a suggestion, but if you do not have one already, Testor's Model Master put out a spiral bound book a few years ago (I still see it advertised in Squadron) that has a large cross-reference section in the back.  I use this source frequently when trying to figure out Gunze, Tamiya, and Humbrol equivalents in the Model Master line.  I have also seen a web site or two in the past that had some of the information, but the Model Master book has the most complete charts that I have found.

Thanks for the suggestion.  I was actually able to find that little book at my LHS, it was dusty and the owner was pretty sure it came with the store, but alas, I have it.  I managed to get the Hornet all painted up.  As I type the gloss coat is drying and I'm eager to get the decals done.  I also managed to locate some squadron patches on e-bay, one for VF-103 (My F-14) and one for VF-84 (My f-4) to add some credibility to the shelf.  I'm hoping to have the hornet done here soon.  The F-14 is ready for its wings, engines, gear doors, canopy and stabs, but too many other kits keep getting in the way.  Pics to follow soon.

Kale,

It looks like only two of us have actually finished our projects thus far, so maybe an extension (perhaps to July 4) would be appropriate.  I keep checking in from time to time, and I am half considering adding another kit to the build (if I get a couple of other projects finished).  Just thoughts on my part, and I will check again to see what you decide.
